What the hell? I got 2:36:?? (i dont remember the miliseconds) and it didn't unlock the expert. I beat it by 5 fucking seconds, and didn't get it! That's the only one I need for Mii outfit B, and it won't unlock it!

What is a staff ghost?

when you set a time on time trials it creates a "ghost" that recreates your exact route when you race against it. "staff ghosts" are ghosts created by staff members who worked on the game. when you beat the first staff ghost's time by a significant amount, it unlocks an "expert staff ghost" that completes the course much faster and is therefore much more difficult to beat. unlocking expert staff ghosts helps you unlock more characters and vehicles I think.

When you do the time trials you can race against a staff ghost (a nintendo staffer who completed the course within a certain time). The regular staff times just used commonsense shortcuts and good driving. If you can beat the staff ghost with by an impressive margin, (differs with the track)The expert ghost is unlocked and you can now challenge their times. Expert staffers used excellent shortcuts and superior driving and mini turbo tecniques, so they're hard to beat.
