  • Ahh Dammit. I was thinking of getting this . The web surfing experience is more than poor. :(

  • @Dirtyb1rd dude its not designed so u can use it instead of a pc and its not designed to be a supercomputer

  • @Dirtyb1rd i dont think this video is the best demo u can get

  • How come the browser seems to respond so slowly yet playing a HD video is extremely fast?

  • @dcsama5 HD Video is Hardware accelerated.

  • @dcsama5 Web browsing is handled by the slow CPU, whereas HD Video is handled by the fast GPU.

  • how i can get raspberry pi ?

  • Would booting from a usb 2.0 connected HD provide better preformance than an Class 10 SDHC card?

  • @NuLLx42 You will not be able to use a Class 10 card currently, the broadcom chip happens to not like the technology.

  • @ssbtoday1 There some fast Class 4 Cards out there though.

  • raspberry pi doesn't even have an official x windows system or complete drivers for its gpu. what can you expect? not to mention it's running from sd (which may only offer 2mb/s r/w)

  • @dwegiel Believe it or not, it's actually dependant on the sd's class rating, so it will be able to max that out. :)

  • I think Midori has some scrolling problems with certain webpages. Maybe we're just seeing one of those.

  • I doubt that Chrome could work faster/better than Midori. I am working on Pentium IV 1,7 GHz machine with 512 MB RAM, and recently switched to Midori from Chrome just because this PC was too slow for Chrome. Midori works faster on such old PC.

  • if it can do windows then i bet you could use a usb hub and another flash drive for readyboost to boost up the ram abit.

  • @BroknSircut It only really has 1 usb bus, which maxs out at 480Mbit/s so... That will hinder your USB performance a lot because it's constantly running on Virtual memory.

  • @TheMadeMario you would be able to allocate some of the SD drive as what is called "swap space" which is effectively like windows readyboost or using a pagefile. It would be slower then normal RAM though.

  • SLOW!!!! the trick on getting this toy to sell will be to have OLED displays to come as a bundle... also... does it has built in wifi????

  • @DIEGOJOVEN 1) It's $35, give it a break.

    2) Again, for $35 it has ethernet (no wifi), but you should be able to use a wifi dongle to connect to a wireless network.

Is it possible to allocate extra space on the sd card as 'extra ram', similar to the feature Windows Readyboost?

  • Gotta go fast...

  • Joke may be old... but 1 person is a BlackBerry.

  • Reddit...yay.

  • Awesome, but do you always scroll like that?

  • This does look slow, but I doubt Midori is the best choice for the Raspberry Pi right now. I'd personally probably default to Chromium.

  • @SnoopJeDi My guess is that Chromium would be about as slow as Midori is at this. My first-gen Eee PC struggles about the same amount on both Chromium and Midori (which is to say, still an acceptable amount).

  • @DaVince21 Then you must be doing something wrong with your EEE-pc. I have a first gen one as well running Lubuntu and Chromium load pages as fast as it can get them and almost as fast as another laptop running a core i5 processor. Obviously not as fast as a core i7 brick I have built but for common browsing tasks it does quite well.

  • @SquirrelFromGradLife Chromium was fast for me. Then, after a certain update, Chromium just got slow. There are some versions that work well with it, though, so maybe the current version is fast again.

Like I said, it runs quite acceptably. I'm also trying to keep the stuff running on it to a minimum. It's also got 2GB of RAM instead of the standard 500MB just so the browser can do more. Said RAM is supposed to be faster, too.

I dunno. Might be because I haven't checked it recently.

  • @DaVince21 I don't know what distro you're running but a quick fix would be to go into your package manager, I use Synaptic, and uninstall Chromium and try again. You could also go to Googles Chrome browser which also works just fine and it should always have the latest updates and correct packages and plugins installed. It uses slightly more RAM than Chromium but it's pretty much bullet proof because it's the boffins at Google that tinkers with it.

  • it isn't slow... it's the software - these days ppl spend little time to optimize stuff

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • This is actually a bit slower than I expected. Having said that I think that there is some work being put in to improve the X windows performance. What is the memory usage on a boot of LXDE?

  • @liamfraser280 Keep in mind that this is only allocating 128 megs of ram due to an OS issue, even though it is the Model B - 128mb less than what it will be at release.

  • why cant you speak? its a great thing the spoken word

  • Raspberry Pi is very slow hardware, especially the CPU. People are generally expecting too much from it.

  • Please test as a LTSP client

Please test network transfer rates vs load

  • The perfect LTSP/RDP client.

Hopefully google will sort their act out and offer true cloud computing

  • Have u tried w/ Chromium ?

  • It looks bit slow. Maybe the community will optimize a bit more?
