You should really hear his rendition of THE COMPANY a novel of the CIA. Wow. Russians, Germans, Hungarians, Men, Women he makes it all so captivating.
I listen to audio books while I work. And, I've experienced more than one favorite title ruined by his unnecessarily melodramatic style. Now, when I see an audiobook narrated by Brick, I look to see if there is another version.
Oddly, the man is popular... Then again, so is McDonalds. And, when something could be as good and savory as filet mignon, Brick will only ever deliver the Big Mac version.
Eh. Can't people have differing opinions without some douche resorting to belittle the other side?
I have narrators I can't stand, but I'm not going to compare them to the disgusting trash that is fast food, and then claim that my own preferences are the crème de la crème of listening sensations.
@Munkatten Hey... There's nothing wrong with liking Big Macs. Once in a while. This guy's whisper-cresendo-whisper melodrama is EVERYWHERE. You can't avoid him. Also, like McDonald's...
Hey guys check out a book trailer by Derrick Wiggins. This could be a new way to audio books, I'd like to call it a audio book slide show. Goto megadwiggins. It's a thriller and introduces the prologue and five chapters of the novel.
I'm going to have to give this guy another chance. My only experience with him is with Sideways, by Rex Pickett. May be because it just wasn't a very good book. It brought out the melodrama.
Thanks again everybody, I can't believe how many views this video gets. Extraordinary. As for the question about page turns, you don't hear them in audiobooks because they're edited out. You don't see any page turns here because there were only three pages and I spread them out, didn't want to have to turn them, figured that would be boring on video. I recorded this at Brilliance Audio in Michigan, not at home. Oh, and IDmadge, sausage? You crack me up.
Scott Brick seems a nice fellow and his birthday greeting to a mature fan was touching. Many believe he's a superb narrator. Just among the male voices, however, it's likely Mr. Brick will admit Frank Muller is without peer.
Then listen to George Guidall, Simon Vance, Humphrey Bower, Will Patton, John Lee, Tom Stechschulte, Simon Prebble, Edward Herrmann, Stefan Rudnicki and Ron McLarty.
If you still believe Scott Brick is the best, you're entitled to your opinion.
@bobh28630 I remember listening to Will Patton read "Thirteen Moons" and I thought, yeah, Will Patton is the best person to read this book. Brick couldn't possibly convince me I was listening to an old cowboy talk about life on the frontier. But, Patton, with his whispery, North Carolina tenor, certainly couldn't read Coben's mysteries as convincingly as Scott Brick's rich, neutral baritone. Perhaps Brick wouldn't be the best choice for everything, but he's certainly up there.
Without a doubt, Scott Brick is the most awesome Audio Narrator in the business. I've probably listen to 100+ audiobooks in the last 12 months and I can honestly say, of all the narrators I've listen to, he is the best, hands down. I've never specifically sought out Scott Brick, but I can tell you that I was pleased whenever I found out that he was narrating the book I chose. Everyone has their own opinion, but I can say that Scott Brick has at least 1 fan for life.
"The Company" was the first time I paid attention to the narrator of an audiobook. After listening to Scott do that book I started purchasing books based solely on the fact that Scott was reading. An AWESOME narrator that puts you *IN* the story. You don't listen when he's reading. You experience.
@PEMontgomery -- "The Company" is also the first time I actually started searching based on Scott Brick's work. This is how I discovered Nelson DeMille's books.
@PEMontgomery -- "The Company" is also the first time I actually started searching based on Scott Brick's work. This is how I discovered Nelson DeMille's books.
1. When recording, do you use a copy of the book, or a printout? I never hear any pages turn.
2. On average, how long do you record before having to stop? Your recordings always seem flawless and I'm wondering if you have to re-record certain sections over and over if you get tongue tied.
3. Do you read a chapter to yourself a few times before you record it? So you know what kind of emphasis to use when doing a character's voice? Or do you do all that on the fly?
@GreedoUT think it all varys from reader to reader but one thing i do know is any "good" reader acatualy reads about half a sentances ahead of what he is acatualy saying.
My old english teacher used to do it and tryed to teach me as i love reading but its very hard. As for the turning pages even if it was printed outt hey would still turn pages so it is most probably done by audio selection in the mic. Any good mic/recording setup can ignore background noise. And hes probably recording at home.
Ha - how cool is this video. Scott does an amazing job and I'm always very happy to see his name appear as narrator on many of the books I've enjoyed over the years. In fact there are many books I've read just because he's been narrating them. Excellent job and keep up the great work!
Wow, I'm amazed at all the comments this has received. I honestly thought it would be the least played video on this site, ever. What a pleasant surprise. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's shared their opinion, it means a lot that you all listen so much. And to those of you who just couldn't stand it, or me, just wanted to say thanks anyway for taking the chance and trying me out. Hope you find something else you'll enjoy.
I first heard SB narrate the Shannara series (authored by Terry Brooks), and immensely enjoyed the experience. Listening to his subsequent works, I find that his technique is aging like a fine wine. It's fair for some to not like Scott's works, but there's no such thing as pleasing everybody. In this case, I'm rather glad I'm not too difficult to entertain :)
Perhaps his style works better in non-fiction, the only books I've listened to in his narration. I've listened to a pair of Michael Pollan books, but I'll probably read them myself soon.
Because of this YouTube post, I listened to the entire reading of THE WOODS. Outstanding book. I go through about a book a week, and this is the best one I've heard in a couple of years. Hadn't heard of the author before, but I'll be trying more of his stuff.
Brick is as good as any of the readers out there. My personal favorite. Very prodigious as well. Very good as one of the tri-readers on A LONG WAY DOWN. Does a lot of the Clive Cussler books. Because it's Brick reading, I'll give this book a try.
Scott Brick is amazing! I will listen to anything he reads, even if it's not a book I'd normally pick up on my own. The guy could make a phone book sound interesting. :-)
Thanks for posting this clip. Nice to see my fave narrator in action.
this is NOT the most riveting video on youtube, Scott Brick reads with NO emotion, he only distinguishes his characters by like a SLIGHT change in accent, he is my LEAST favorite audiobook reader.
JLRedlion you are a complete idiot. There is always one, and we found you straightaway. You have offered proof that you have zero capability to recognize talent, and I look forward to your future posts and reviews, as I will assume the opposite true for each one.
wow. that sounds pretty personal, considering you're not following up with specifics. I belong to the larger cross section of opinion that enjoys his talent. *shrugs*
Let's be clear: I'm not saying Scott is infallible, nor am I rescinding the possibility of not enjoying any other works I have yet to come across.
But, I have already heard a half dozen titles, and he delivers value to my satisfaction: So far, So good. And, even if I weren't to like a work of an artist, I wouldn't discount the good I've already heard, and wouldn't be so radical in a public tirade. I respect artists very deeply especially when they're as committed as this one!
Wow! He is amazing, isn't he? It is strange to watch him work, though. Just listening to the characters he creates with, I can picture them so clearly. I can picture their mannerisms and facial expressions all from just hearing Scott's voice. So, the image of his mostly expressionless face with his incredibly expressive voice in juxtaposition with the vivid characters in my imagination is incongruous to say the least. Go Scott!
A steady hand on the tiller but a little forced or overwrought. I prefer a more neutral tone to lay on my emphasis, my misreadings - that is the natural of this quality of thiller...
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I guess, but I think you're nuts. Brick is outstanding in my opinion. Loved his work in this one. Really hit the various voices nicely, including the Russian thugs, the 16-year-old stripper and the flamboyant attorney.
He is ok but can be tedious in passages like the one featured here. It comes across over worked - not letting the reader build their own emphasis. I know it is a difficult task and Brick is a steady hand on the tiller but I often want neutral to lay on my own intonation in my head.
I love Scott Brick... especially the Nelson Demille stuff!! Getting the George Washington stuff next!!!

Go listen to Roy Dotrice if you want to hear a good reader.
Everything is Wawawa with this guy. Melodramatic is right. He stinks.
