The Lithuanian SSR anthem is much more melodic than the one sung after the Soviets' departure. It seems the reason is because the Soviets brought class and structure to Lithuania instead of the bums we now see hanging around pool halls.

the Russians living in Latvia are 2nd and 3rd generation Russians, born and risen in Latvia. Their ancestors where sent to Latvia, very often against their own will, from other sites of the Soviet Union. They where sent there by central governments of the Kremlin. The majority of Russians living in Latvia came there during the Russian occupation 1945-1991. Russia is a huge country; why in the world do they want to come and infest our small country? What is wrong with living in Russia, if you are a Russian? Latvia cannot afford a large influx of non-Latvians. There are about 700,000 Russians in Latvia. If you triple that, Latvia would cease to exist as Latvia - and I want to have a homeland where people speak my language and keep my culture.

The way to get through that garbage is to understand the world to begin with, and ignore the crap while you are getting your degrees. Lithuanians are also the immigration group in Norway comitting most crimes, even though they're not that many (7000 people, 2008 est.). When I was living in Saint Petersburg last year, I was never witness to any crime at all. I'm not glorifying the Russians, but the fact is, many of the bad people go abroad to do their crimes, so therefore you get bad impressions of Russians as a whole. Btw, Norway never even entered the EU :)

I were in Latvija this december. They are not still in Europe! They not accepted my euro in Duty Free shops in Riga Airport. They told me to buy their currency in order to buy duty-free goods. Also they did not respect national languages also. I took fly "Barcelona-Riga" and nobody from airplane crew spoke Spanish! Only Latvian and very poor English. If they would not speak Russian with me so they have to know more languages in order to communicate with people abroad.

Some Jews should've been wiser though not to jump on Soviet bandwagon as they arrived in the Baltics and start to help them exterminate local populations. We understand that Jews were scared shitless from Nazis and invading Soviet forces in Baltics meant that they'd be safe if Germany decided to attack. But maybe some whould've prayed God instead of collaborating with Soviets.....

By the way, Russians now are 39% of the population in Latvia, and most of them came in unasked, like cockroaches (tarkans). I do not hate Russians, except when they don't leave my people alone. the Russians living in Latvia are 2nd and 3rd generation Russians, born and risen in Latvia. Their ancestors where sent to Latvia, very often against their own will, from other sites of the Soviet Union. They where sent there by central governments of the Kremlin. I love Latvia and the Latvians, but I also love the Russians. You should try and think before you write such rascist posts without any historic roots. Greetings from Norway.

The majority of Russians living in Latvia came there during the Russian occupation 1945-1991. Russia is a huge country; why in the world do they want to come and infest our small country? What is wrong with living in Russia, if you are a Russian? Latvia cannot afford a large influx of non-Latvians. There are about 700,000 Russians in Latvia. If you triple that, Latvia would cease to exist as Latvia - and I want to have a homeland where people speak my language and keep my culture.

I've been to Latvia several times and i like Latvians and Latvia. But the hate I can see shining through in all your posts, makes me sick. You know, as well as i do, that the russians sent to Latvia where mainly qualified people, and they were needed for industrial purposes in your country.

Plomben, first of all, you are not the only one that has a Masters or PhD - enough said - and I understand more now than YOU ever will - unless, of course you live there for a while AND talk to some of the people who lived there before the Soviets (before they all die off). Latvia did not need any "qualified" Russians - they had more of their own than the Russians did at that time. I am afraid that your "studies" included a lot of propaganda, and, of course, you did not know the difference.

Plomben, I have no idea what Norwegian universities are like. I DO know that much of academia unfortunately is permeated by leftists - and that is being kind. The way to get through that garbage is to understand the world to begin with, and ignore the crap while you are getting your degrees. I don't imagine that Norwegian universities are immune from those influences. My advice is to get the knowledge they offer, but ignore their opinions concerning the world view.

Happy New Year to you too. To me, there is a difference in being a nationalist and being a racist. You say they were uninvited. Still, many of them were forced to move by the Soviet authorities. In Norway we have a lot of immigrants. They were not invited by the Norwegian government. Should we send them back to Iraq or Afghanistan? Most of the Russians in Latvia have no place to go to in Russia. Still, you want to force them out of your country. Pity.

The diffference is maybe do the Russian Latvians integrate into Latvian society or do they crow on how great Russia is? I have no problem with people being offered safety in Britaina Norway or Latvia. It is when the hospitality of teh adopted country is abused i get angry. I am an Immigration Officer in the UK and I say make sure your countries do not let as much shit in as the UK has or future generations will regret it. Most of them integrate to a normal extent. They learn the language and get education and jobs. Still, they want to keep their identity, so they continue to speak russian to eachother. What's happening in the UK is very different. The UK makes their own regulations, Latvia was ruled and occupied by the Soviet Union, and had no voice regarding immigration.

THis is a most interesting and strange situation . i enjoyed your reply and you are clearly an intelligent person to debate with. My sister had a lodger who was a Latvian Russian and she was very nice but her family were victims of forced repatriation. Most Russians I meet in my job are involved in crime so i suppose I just see the bad side. I go to Lithuania alot so i may go over to Latvia to see for myself. Norway has made a wise decision to leave the EU. It is full of cheats

Thanks. My impression is that Lithuania has more crime than Latvia. Lithuanians are also the immigration group in Norway comitting most crimes, even though they're not that many (7000 people, 2008 est.). When I was living in Saint Petersburg last year, I was never witness to any crime at all. I'm not glorifying the Russians, but the fact is, many of the bad people go abroad to do their crimes, so therefore you get bad impressions of Russians as a whole. Btw, Norway never even entered the EU :)

I were in Latvija this december. They are not still in Europe! They not accepted my euro in Duty Free shops in Riga Airport. They told me to buy their currency in order to buy duty-free goods. Also they did not respect national languages also. I took fly "Barcelona-Riga" and nobody from airplane crew spoke Spanish! Only Latvian and very poor English. If they would not speak Russian with me so they have to know more languages in order to communicate with people abroad.

Liberty is nothing without equality. Freedom without equality is but a privilegium for the chosen, while equal freedom for all is real freedom. That cannot be achieved by something like capitalism or liberalism with he pyramid in it's mind. It must be either socialism or communism!

I mean the old hymn represents a"dead " era in latvian history which will never come back to haunt them. The new hymn represnts the FREEDOM and LIBERTY that now exists in Latvija Communism is DEAD, MIRT/NEGYVAS.TOT, MORTO. Niekada vel komunizas bus gyvas mus saliyje
