  • @op3rator531 he plays a labay 2x4 in this video

  • @1devo6587 Thanks!

  • Er, good footage. These lads were up to something. Even after 30 years, it's radical. Looking forward to seeing them in Portand, Or 3/14/11.

  • Can't wait to see them march 19th!

This is the dog that I live my life by!!!

And I honesty think that Josh freese is on par with Alan myers, he ain't all Devo but he's a hell of a drummer!

  • Alan's thoughts:

3:10 - "Man, this helmet is too friggin' hot."

3:15 - "And I'm ditching these stupid goggles, too."

  • Have to admit, when Alan left the band I stopped listening to them.

  • Beautiful spud boys.

    Making beautiful noise.

  • one of my favorite devo songs. i love the guitar. such a unique sound

  • Skateboarding, DEVO ... only to be mentioned in a word ...

  • my brother brought home a Devo album while I was still listening to Zep and Skynrd. We played the shit out of DEVO and had some crazy times. I grew to love DEVO too. WE ARE DEVO. D-E-VO

    Thanks JP

  • genius

  • This video recording is 33 years old - they could appear with such a performance as a new band on stage nowadays if they were still at the same age....and new fans would come up and say it´s a new sound.

"There´s more to the picture than meets the eye" (Neil Young - who also had a productive co-operation with them).

  • how come i have never seen this D:

    I feel ashamed of myself.

  • @RevAndroid Nothing to be ashamed of. Now embrace.

  • Yessss!!!!!

  • SUPERB!!!!

  • brilliant !!

guess im only a spud boy

  • brilliant !!

  • Whatever they're on......gimme some!!!!!

  • In their prime Devo could not be touched.

  • Thudmother, that guitar is called the LaBaye 2x4, made in the 60's.

  • Oh, that Alan! He rocks!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • this specific version drives me crazy- they all looks so hot

  • @gewlah haha! i can see where you're coming from, any non devo fan would think you're certifiable for saying that

  • the sound quality is incredible!!!!!!!

  • The scream/squealing at 5:47 is amazing.

  • What kind of guitar is that? (the long straight one)

  • how the hell was this not a hit??? its so freakin catchy

  • @TVindustries5000 The world was not ready for the POWER that is DEVO back in the day....

  • @woowoo1967 YUP

  • Alan Myers is just amazing.

  • there just as good live as they are in the studio.. there are few bands i love live.. 2 are devo and the damned amongst many many more...

  • @fukyous Mr. Kamikaze, Mr. DNA, He's an altruistic pervert, etc.

    Here to spread some genes

This monkey wants a word with you (before solo)

  • Duty Now For the Future...

  • suburban robots that monitor reality

  • i love this

  • Praise Dobbs, this is waaayy better than the studio version, which wasn't bad in its own right.

  • God this is better than the studio version

  • @Idkfawin32

All their live stuff is better than the studio stuff, IMO.

  • @MoonCrashed I agree, they are awesome live.

  • @MoonCrashed Aint that the way it is supposed to be? Just sayin....

  • @Idkfawin32 All live music should be better than the studio version.... It equals .... TALENT... :)

  • 3:40 - Pure consternation; Mark looks disgusted, gestures "keep vamping," dives under the rack to try to get the keyboard to behave, then stands up to sing, "Wait a minute, something's wrong." As Jerry said (quoted down in the comments), "we had a little touch sensitive keyboard called the Wasp ,and we were onstage during Smart Patrol/DNA and we hear this awful noise like bleeepoolgaarmnoodeeblelelele!!!zoooaaaeeee!!! it was PLAYING ITSELF because of the heat of the lights." I love live music.

  • i watch this probably every day

  • @rufioestrada probably yeah

  • @rufioestrada I live this every day.

  • @rufioestrada agreed...

  • Duty Now for the Future .

  • "we shove the poles in the hole"...shove it! AWSOME

  • Superb drumming!

  • I love this song, I agree its one of the very best

  • I'm so grateful to have been around for such talented and unique bands like Devo, The Clash, The Ramones & The Specials, to name a few. ALL GENERATIONS gravitate to new music and a new sound to call THEIR OWN. Devo's "first two" albums simply set the bar in this department. I'm proud to have been from the punk, ska, new wave generation. ARE WE NOT MEN?

  • What kind of guitar is Bob1 shredding on in this video, i wants it!

  • @xvilemx

    It's a LaBaye 2x4 from 1967

look for the website myrareguitars . com

  • Devo created Punk

  • He's been with the world/I'm tired of the soup de jour

I don't think noboby around here understands my potato/

I'm just a spud boy looking for the real tomato/

  • Smoked alot of weed and cranked this tune out hard core back in the day, it still is one of my faves. I still have this on vinyl lol but I have it on cd too! Devo is the shit!

  • saw devo 3 weeks ago! they rocked!

  • i'm seeing them in two days, and this is gonna rule!!!!

  • NO ONE AROUND HERE NO COMPRENDO MA POTATO! devo is and forever will be my most favroite band EVER!

  • This isn't punk its in its own class and just as valid

  • @aflockofmusic2..You actually call this ''punk''...with all the silly ''keyboards'' and dancable beat and funny pop lyrics...The Sex Pistols cast the whole mold for 'punk' 'and had none of the above going on...

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree of course devo is punk. Punk is not just one musical style-its a mindset. Punk must b challenging, in DEVOs case they are challenging normality.

  • Comment removed

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree try "Uncontrollable Urge". May be more your speed.

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree

I don't agree. The first wave of punk was completely different from what came after. In the beginning there was much more versatility in style and sound. The Tubeway Army's first two albums were considered punk music, one album later and the band, especially lead singer Gary Numan, were considered something quite different, synthpop pioneers. In the early LA punk scene, around 77, Devo and The Germs were seen as torchbearers of the movement. Read history.

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree Listen to the first 2 recordings....

  • That drummer is a machine........ DEVO 4 EVER

  • fucking MOST!!!!!

  • This isnt punk.its amazing new wave

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree no this is punk, they were a punk/hard raock band in the 70's

they switched to new wave in the 80's.

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree

This was punk. In the early days hardcore wasn't around yet.. and punk was not yet so cliched and formulaic.. The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Devo, Gary Numan and the Tubeway Army.. all part of their prospective punk scenes in the early days.. then the punks started making rules and all became clones. Punk bands became "post-punk" then "new wave", but those were always just labels to create fads then sell records.

  • @bluejeans166 You are totally correct!! So many people don't realize the groups you mentioned (and others) are totally punk. Your explaination is perfect.

  • i've been with the world, and i f@cking love this song

  • I've just embraced the Devo-lution, but i'm extremely satisfied.

When i was young they've never got my attention.I was too young.

But now... i am ready. I will continue to experience Devo from now on. I feel they are special.

  • Fags

  • @MyNoseIsBroken

    and potatoes

  • These two songs belong TOGETHER.

  • Zeppelin rocks and so does DEVO, and this to me is their greatest achievement ever. However, it's incomplete without the song they usually did right after "Smart Patrol" called "Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy."

  • Devo kick ass!!!

  • I wonder who made that weird stick-like guitar.

  • @Desmaad A company called LaBaye - it was, appropriately, called the 2x4

  • Devo was right about EVERYTHING.

  • @GroddGuerrilla Steel yourself for the times.

  • It just sucks watching the footage of them now- They've aged like the human beings that they are and are just trying to rock. still DEVOted!

  • I love how Alan takes his energy dome and goggles off around 3:10-3:20, you wouldn't have any idea that he's playing with just one hand from the sound recording. It took me dozens of views on this one before I even noticed it.

  • the second half(mr. dna) is the baddest devo jam of all time...arguably

  • I swear to God this drumming is as good as ny of the "great: drummers

  • off the chain, DEVO FOR EVER

  • i agree with skulldini.....this is music

  • 2:42 EPIC.

  • to the 11 people who thumbed this down-you're idiots

  • MR. KAMIKAZE!!!

  • I always love Mark's "We must repeat"

  • ROCK!!!

  • Common stock

    We work around the clock

We shove the poles in the holes!

  • Fun stuff.

  • tired or the soup du jour ....

  • I'd love to know who the stage tech is on-stage -- working on Mark's keyboards? Is it brother Jim Mothersbaugh?

  • the world was too young to understand their potato.

  • WE MUST REPEAT!

  • 2x4 Guitar, Awesome.

  • Best video on Youtube

  • well executed spuds.....

  • Nor me, my potato too is now fried. (We hate N-Dubz please watch our vids 'cause it really annoys them.)

  • Live at the Starwood in West Hollywood, CA

  • DeVo IS THE BEST!!!! i got a black and white silk screened t shirt of them on stage at this concert.. its like a graffiti stencill of them on stage at this gig.. it all started with a reccord sent to me from the grave when i was 12... i found my dead aunt cathys DeVo Freedome Of Coice Album.. i became a huge fan from there.. i trip out that at one time in ohio they were a white power band.. Mark Mothersbaugh is like the grandwhizzard of the Klu Klux Klan.. Could u immagin that bullshit?

  • @DinoVice i mean mark mothersbaugh's dad is the grand whizzard of the kkk or was.. im so stoned... hahahaha

  • Justin Bovee

  • 5:05 best guitar solo ever? yep. haha

  • way to far ahead of its time.best fucking band ever.fuck u bono.this rulz all time fav band of the universe.and aliens like it too.

  • Utter quality , gentlemen. We salute you!

  • Great live version!

  • Is that Bill Gates on drums?

  • ufff....the guitarist was a real hunk at that time!!!

    love their short athletes trunks.............

  • I saw them in late '78 just after they were on SNL. It looked just like this. They are still playing, but I miss Alan.

  • Saw them live a couple years ago in Agoura Hills, CA. KICK. ASS.

  • Kind of an uneven album but what a great song. Very impressive live performance.

  • I always thought this was their best song.

  • Love their helmets! ^^

  • always loved devo , loved this track , now i MUST see em live , if they`re still up and running

  • Yup they are ^^ touring right now, I gotta see them if they'll come to europe

  • @yousmellofurination

They are! They played at the Vancouver Olympics, are going to play in Coachella in April and are due to release a new album (followed by a tour) this Spring.

  • Ah, just wait until you're in your 30s, and all your punk rock friends from college are now sending their kids to Catholic School. De-evolution in action!

  • NEW DE-VO CD out Spring 2010!!! and DE-VO is playing Coachella this April 17th!!!!

  • DEVO- best of the era in music !

Wow! In concert, they sounded SO good, BETTER than on their records!

Note I said records. I'm an old creature; maybe young folk might call me a 'perv ' Ha ha. Perv you!

DEVO is right; humans do not evolve upwards, rather, they digress downwards. Look around you. Tell me different.

De-evolution is real, and most of you can't or won't see it.

    OBAMACHANGE?

You voted for it, losers. Haha ha! I'm retired ! And I own your building.

  • You should rent "Idiocracy", a Mike Judge movie about how people devolve over a few hundred years. It makes the best argument for de-evolution I've seen yet, and it doesn't hurt that it'll make you Laugh Out Loud (LOL) for real.

  • @hines1957 That film is fucking excellence.
