it's dependent from the render engine if there's a black line or if there isn't. in vray you don't need to do anything. if you're using mentalray or whenever you get problems with your alpha in anti-aliased areas you need to add the file to your comp, right click and go to "interpret footage". there you need to set the alpha to "integrated" with black.
the black border disappears - magic ;)
(btw you need to set the color to your BG color you used in 3ds max)

If you've never used 3D software before, but can't afford Maya or 3D Studio Max, try Blender, it's completely free and very powerful. There are many tutorials to teach you how to use it. Also search for "Elephant's Dream" it was made with blender :)

There is a preset material in Maya called "use background", (in the hypershade, on the left, scroll down a bit till you see it).
Apply this to a plane, set as your ground. This will make the plane go green coloured.
It will now recieve shadows, and render them into the alpha channel of your renders, but it wont render itself.
