It was, in short, a powder keg waiting to explode. Politics on the left AND right has always attracted a certain amount of power hungry people, and some of them are corrupt. The patriot act allowed for terrible abuse in the wrong hands, and sooner or later someone would have come into office who would have exploited it.
Number 2- Indefinite detention- my thoughts are best echoed by a more eloquent speaker- "We hold these truths to be self evident. That all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights." Indefinite Suspension, without trial, is a violation of the principles we have always held ourselves to. We should never have compromised those principles in the first place. Fighting enemies does no good if we sell our soul in the process.
The Fairness Doctrine. First off- what about it? My understanding is its not been reinstated, and isn't on the president's list of stated goals. From what I've seen, the only thing to be angry about is that it hasn't been stated emphatically enough not to be on anyone's agenda. Second, if the doctrine was instated and regulated correctly, wouldn't it be cleaning up the much vaunted 'liberal bias' the media supposedly has? For my part, I find 24 hour news so laiden with opinion that its useless.
