It' funny how he's getting criticized for this by other trainers. He's not even in the pool, he's trying to give people a good idea being out of the pool so we can actually see what he's doing. The other trainers need to shut up and train their people, because they're drowning.
Kicking starts from the hip socket. Teaching the fundamentals the wrong way is fundamentally wrong. Being a nice kid does not automatically mean you know the difference between swimming and soccer, for example.
bend from knee will happen on whip-like downbeat of each kick, but knee joint will 'lock' as the leg recovers back up again, so the leg should always straighten on the upbeat of each kick (or reverse for backstroke) this will happen naturally if you don't copy this guy. i always tell my swimmers to just think of the small down part of each kick
My right foot doesn't work with what my brain commands it to do, and I'm living in a house with a pool.... And yet again, this isn't helpful at all. *thumbs down*
@TheLeilisa the only two things that i know of that can help you grow taller are genetics(how tall your parents and grandparents or aunts and uncles are)
and leg implant surgery(not sure if that's really what it's called).
Jimmy D Shea definity knows more than this guy. Another awesome video to check out is posted by ACTIVEdotcom, 'Efficient swimming' by Dave Scott who is a six-time Ironman world champion. He's brilliant.
If you guys want good swimming tips type in Jimmy d shea swimming lessons. He's a Marine and is an amazing swimmer. Very good videos to help you with all the different types of swimming. Many have looked at them and you can see all of the positive comments he gets. Check it out!
@omgeelaurenn Yeah you're supposed to point ur feet. My brother was Navy special forces and he always told me to point my feet when I swim. You can practice flutter kicks outside the pool by laying on your back with your hands under your tail bone. Point your toes and begin kicking. Really there shouldn't be a whole lot of bend in ur knees, maybe slightly.
FYI, for all those swimmers our there trying to get that AA cut, DO NOT DO THIS! you need to extend you legs out and kick with your hips! otherwise you'll be stuck with that BB cut!
the positions etc are incorrect! I am trying to correct these errors in my own training after having a bad instructor who only focuses on feeling up women in the class!!!
Thank you for taking the time and posting this video. I gave birth to twin girls 9 months ago and I am trying to get back in shape, my husband got me a membership to the gym and we went out to the pool he try to explain to me how to swim some laps across the pool. I had try for a week and it just was not working out for me I was doing all wrong. I sat down and watched all of your the videos on the freestyle and replayed them over and over. my swimming has improve. I really joy doing it too!
Sorry, this is the wrong way of explaining it, your video shows movement at the knee. Movement starts at the hips, only at the hips, everything else follows. Easy.
i just started swimming and this flutter kick thing is bloody hard. Holding on to a float and using just my legs I manage to do the first 25m ok, but then i just get really tired and the moment you stop it's that much harder to start again cos your body sinks and you totally lose momentum.
Get a tempo trainer, it really helps. I train twice a day every day, swim mornings and weights in the afternoons. I use very light weights and high reps, so I can train every day. Also need supplements such as Eas iso drive and so on. Search 'scooby workout' for weights routine and technique.
filming is a great way to view a stroke. I can watch my own stroke. i tried picking my hips up today so they didnt sink in the water. just practice every day.
the onnly reason i kept watching is cuz of the cute guy (; he's not too smart tho. he's like "u dont just use your knees, you use your WHOLE leg" then he just used his knees in the demonstration...lol fail..
Dude, i'm sorry, but you're wrong about this. You DO NOT bend the knees when kicking. you get more push out of your legs when you keep your legs stright. I've heard from every coach I had since 3rd grade, "KEEP YOUR LEGS STRIGHT!" whenever i was being lazy. So, just keep your legs stright and you should be set.
Uhm.. "Expert" village? You are bending your knees WAY too much. The bulk of your power is supposed to come from the full leg (hips down), you're just going to exhaust yourself with an ineffective kick.
Hey DEChad , could u tell me how the correct kicking should be? Is it totally from hips or partially from hips and partially from knees? reply plz , thanx anyway.
uh huh... its way easier to demonstrate with a kickboard. if i had a camera and the time i could show you how this whole thing really works. the powere if from your hips down, but the real way to do it is to be able to use the full leg as a propeller, the feet as paddles, the knees will just really help the kick flow good
@mido851114 Did not mean to ignore you (for two years) but never saw your comment. You start with a slow kick from the thighs, knees are not locked, so they bend slightly. Build up your strength and then build up the power so you dont exhaust yourself.
@DEChad Agreed. Kicking for swimming is like kicking a ball. There is a movement from the hips and then from the knees. The range of your feet should be about 10cm, any more and you just create more drag than aid. By the way, love the professionalism of this video.... (sarcasm)
@Garcia8195 flawed logic. I would be a fairly terrible trainer if I didn't take the time to look into new training techniques and learn about growing trends.
Please review the remainder of the comments and see that it is not just myself with this belief, but many others as well. I didn't just come to this video and "diss" so to speak; I offered constructive advice based off my assessment of this ineffective kick.
@Garcia8195 I'm here because I'm trying to find a video to supplement my teaching for my students....but this one is not good technique. My students ask me if they should be looking at youtube videos to try to improve as swimmers, and this is a good example of why I answer "no".
