All the Garland magic is present in her singing this Arlen song. The legato, the phrasing, the "lift" as the music demands, the range completely intact. What more can we ask of this legend than this late-career perfection?
i love this. i know she was pretty far gone but there still is something so touching..so beautiful..so sad in this performance. she touches my heart as she always has done. I love the music too. My good friend was at this performance . I was only 12 at the time.
Incredible. If only, if only...a new record deal might have saved her. Imagine just one day in the studio, with her voice like this (damaged but in control) singing songs suited to her range and the awareness of what she COULDN'T do anymore. Think of Billie Holiday's "Lady In Satin."
Amazing! . . . especially given the time line. Thank You for posting this. This is certainly the BEST I've heard her sound at this point in time . . . makes you wonder.
On a Sunday the 22nd of June 1969, The World woke up to the News of Judy Garland's death. The news sent shock waves across the entire planet & for the 7 days the media paid homage to " A Great Lady who had the Ultimate Interview"! Judy, Your fans still mourn your passing. I have the comfort of knowing your spirit was embraced by GOD & that HE showed you HIS infinite peace & all that heaven has too offer you. U brought a lot of joy to me & I thank God for creating you. RIP on this 6/22/10
A little bit of Trivia. The Picture of Esther on Stage with the Glen Williams band in her Opening number in "A Star is Born" SHows Glen Williams the Orchestra Leader behind her. If there are any fans of the TV show "DALLAS" out there, The actor who played Glen Williams is the same actor who Played J.R. Ewing's crooked dirty cop, Det. Harry McSween for 8 or 9 9seasons on the Best Night time Drama. I hope everyone has a Happy New Year. :-)
@NFitalianGuy I think the actor's name was James Brown. i hadn't known he was on "Dallas," but i think he was in a show about Rin Tin Tin in the 1950's. He was also on record as a Garland fan.
Wow, she really gave this song new meaning when she did this in 1968. I was just born. Too bad I couldn't see a New world with Judy Garland in it. How wonderful it muct have been be able to see her in person singing. The only thing I was born too late was to see my favorite Singer in person and experience the Garland Magic first hand. Thank you for posting this
Your Clip of Judy singing "It's A New World" from 1968. Is very touching. I love this Version Better than in A Star Is Born back in 1954. Harold Arlen was Born in Buffalo New York which is 20 Miles from Niag Falls, NY where I was born & raised and still live. He seemed to have had the Midas touch when it Came to 2 Songs that were an absolute "Must" for her to sing at her Concerts. Over The Rainbow & The Man That Got Away. This song a Year or so before her death, seemed more Poignant than ever.
WOW I had no idea whatsoever that she ever attempted this song in later years outside of the Film A STAR IS BORN. She was really in surprisingly good voice in 1968, better than she had been in previous years - I don't mean this unkindly, but was this particular Concert in 1968 a "rarity" that her voice with it's up's and down's was in such good shape for that time-frame?
Thanks for posting. This is one of my favorite Judy songs, and a brilliant performance.
As for Judy's voice in this era.....it varied. She was brilliant until the end, but some days were better than others. You should check out her version of "It's All For You" from 1968. It's on YouTube....or was. Anyway, even though her voice is not as pristine as it once once, the performance is absolutely incredible!! Full of sincerity and emotion. One of my absolute favorites!!!
@JohnnyGNV She also sounds wonderful, to name a few times, in 68 during her last performance in the states in Philadelphia. Also she sounds Marvelous on the Mike Douglas show from 68. To me it all had to do with how happy she was feeling and her pharmaceuticals. The bennies could really dry out her throat.
@JohnnyGNV I agree. I think when Judy was well rested and not worked constantly, her voice need to be rejuvenated and here she sounds astounding! for all the nay sayers out there, this is a yr before she passed away and she sounded perfect!
my God.... great voice.... magic and wonderful! this is Judy Garland the best on the world... Unforgettable! thanx Judy!

Whatever the condition of her voice (which I think sounds quite lovely here), she always sang straight to the tear ducts.
