Watch out for these retards with Courage Campaign! Also, the signature gatherers were telling the truth, they were not misrepresenting at all. Everything they said was on the petitions and part of the bill. They have to summarize, otherwise people will bitch about how long it takes. So courage campaign, make sure you know what the hell you're talking about before you post videos. You knowww you ask for signatures on online shit all the time.
This videographer is a Michael Moore wannabe. The guys were totally honest about the petitions in his video, supporting people's right to vote on various issues. He tries to spin that they are crooks when the video shows differently.
Also, it's not easy collecting signatures. You take a lot of shit from people. The guy who did this video...WTF...you don't believe in the democratic process? It's not perfect but at least it allows people to have some choice. Once the issue gets on the ballot it is objectively broken down in the voter guide regarding the pro's and cons. But if assholes like this gripe about how it's summarized then it prevents it from qualifying and giving people a choice. This A-hole is completely un-democratic
It's just to get it on the ballot, voter initiatives require substantial amount of signatures to qualify for an election. For instance, in California, a constiitutional amendment requires 8% of the electorate (total votes casted) for the previous Governors Election. Therefore, they require over 1 million signatures with even distribution of all counties in the state. Petitioning has been criticized because the gatherer is paid. Can't you get paid for doing something you believe in?
This is total spin, this is bullshit, what the petitioner exactly what he meant. You haters have it twisted. ITS th VOTERS duty to read the petition, you dont have any misrepresentations on film. BIATCH. Show evidence not opinion. Bitches. Little democracy hating sheeple.
Republicans have blocked Democrats' attempts to eliminate the electoral college (by constitutional amendment or by all states at once). Either nationally by counting the popular votes or by divvying up the electoral votes in each state, Democrats would win. Republicans are preventing this same thing from happening in Texas, where Democrats would pick up many electoral votes. This is another Karl Rove scheme to prevent Democrats from having their votes count and be counted.
There are states that do, but they are insignificant. Maine, for example, divides its two electoral votes.
The Constitution says that if the electoral college votes are to be changed in a state it has to be done by the legislature, NOT by ballot initiatives.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I love it when Democrats accuse Republicans of "dirty tricks." By the way, the reason this petition is out is because the Democrat-controlled legislature refuses to allow voters to decide the issue. Why are they so afraid of representative government?
Then why can't they be upfront about it instead of trying to weasel their way out of having to explain it in detail before getting their signature? Why not put it upfront, because obviously it's the most important issue to them?
This guy is newsworthy because he was a Republican petition gatherer. I can't tell you how many times I've been approached my lefties who misrepresented petitions. It's up to signatories to check out petitions before they sign them. His actions are NOTHING when compared to ACORN and other leftist organizations. I hope the kid learns his lesson - Republicans are held to a much higher standard...
What petitions have lefties misrepresented? I know you can't because the initiative process is a tool of rich elites, the corporate class. That's all who can afford to hire enough petition signature gatherers to get initiatives on the ballot. Stop making up lies.
Every other state gives all their electoral college votes to the winner in the state. Splitting the electoral college vote would divides california's votes evenly among both major candidates. The votes would effectively cancel out, and california would have no real voice in the national election.
This is pretty much an admission by the Republicans that they will lose California in '08.
every other state (except Maine and Nebraska - except all their congressional districts have had uniform results since they started doing that)
It wouldn't be even, but it would likely swing 20 electoral college votes, that would have went to dems, to Republicans - a 40 vote difference, which could likely be the deciding factor in a majority of future Presidential elections.
It'd be a good strategy for Republicans, except it's pretty futile.
I think the GOP would have been much wiser to have attempted splitting electoral college votes based on the percentages of the state's popular vote, instead of by congressional districts
Congressional districts have been gerrymandered to be either 65+% Democratic or 65+% Republican. This change doesn't bring any competitiveness to CA. It does nothing but help Republicans- straight and simple- I suspect it will be impossible to get such a heavily Democratic state to pass this- I think it's futile
Just like when Rove and Ken Lay went after Gray Davis to get Arnold elected. Or Prop 187, which was phrased in double negatives confusing voters. I wouldn't count on this not passing if it gets on the ballot. Repubs never show their whole hand until they have to, and I'm sure that they've got a sophisticated ad campaign all set to go to trick voters into going for it. It's how the GOP operates. Not an honest bone in any of them.
Democrats' attempts to get rid of electoral college have been blocked by Republicans. This is Karl Rove trying to game the system by allowing only Republican voters' ballots get counted. Republicans have blocked this from happening in Texas. You need to wake up and learn how the GOP is dirty and for the elites only.
If you guys care about misleading signature collectors, you should have seen the PROP 93 guys!
I happened to observe them 6 times a day, everyday, all over CA.
Besides for the ones who made everyone think it was just an `additional cap` on legislative terms, there were guys who told people that our legislators can serve 14 years in EACH house - "28 total", "and this would change it to 12 total", and there was a guy who told people it was an initiative to get our troops home from Iraq sooner...
It's great to see that the Repugnantcans have so much money to spend. Maybe with the fines and court cases (Lawyers Fees) that they will be involved in ,our judicial system may bring in some needed financial relief. And put a few of them were they are most needed and welcomed,( The California Penal System ).

If states like Texas and Georgia and Arizona and Tennessee are willing to do the same thing first, sure why not??
But then again, wouldn't it be easier to just eliminate the electoral college all together?
Changing the voting laws in California would allow a candidate to lose the popular vote by millions of votes and still become president.

It would be sad, if US DEMOCRATS started picking and choosing which democracy-hating acts we should condemn, and which we should disregard.
The Prop 93 deception was the worst of the worst of the worst, and we're hurting ourselves, allowing GOP Leaders to be the only ones to say so.
