@Gmancrap I searched the world over for 30 years to find the best quality remaining version of the film, I digitized it, I bought the best DVD burner, best software, and best recordable media to produce it, I maintain the ebay listing so that you'll be able to buy it, I ship it for free, I pay the ebay listing fees, I pay the ebay and PayPal commissions, and I make a contribution to a couple of the FDNY charities. For all that I ask $43.00. ebay item number 140371334794. Thanks.
Sorry man, I didn't mean to offend you. Trust me, I'll keep it on my mind once I get some money, I mean that's really awesome you did all of that and I respect that like hell.
Check out the teaser trailer to the new show coming out called "UPTOWN" about Washington Heights in the 80's. You want the real truth? Well now you will get your chance to see it all. Type in Uptown Teaser in the search box. Also visit uptownseries(dot)com
My father worked in FD when the Bronx was burning. Animal House on Jerome Ave. I fear the city could turn into another mess like the 70's from the perfect cocktail of a broken economy, talk of lay offs, cut backs on FD & PD and the rise in crime. Lets hope it doesn't. get this far.
Thanks for being a good dad, Dad. I'll have to show him this video.
How times have changed....OSHA would have had a field day, with the way it was done back then. I remember the "leather lungs," and how the Scott Pak's were frowned upon. Although the composition of materials are different today, the "old timers", were the greatest group of firefighters to behold.
This was my Dad's firehouse from the early 60's to 1979. I grew up in that firehouse with great men like the Varenzzano brothers (Mickey and Billy) and Billy Kelly and Billy Knapp and Charlie McCarthy and of course, My Dad, Buddy Croce. I could list so many more names. These men were themost brave men I have even seen in my 46 years. You are all my heroes.
@kotep777 Landlords? They had no choice. The animals moved in and didn't pay rent anymore. Landlords couldn't pay for the upkeep of the buildings. The tenants would destroy the buildings and the value would plummet. It was the only way out for the landlords and still lost a ton. That's what happens to any city where the whites move out.
Tony, aren't you the guy who got in trouble back in January for copying other people's videos?
Buy from a 100%-rated ebay PowerSeller. ebay item number 140371334794.
Why is it $43.00? Because I scoured the world for 30+ years to bring you the best available copy on the highest quality DVD media, burned on the highest quality equipment, with chapter controls. And I posted excerpts here so you can see EXACTLY what you're getting from me.
Remember in 1989 (I think) when the Intervale Avenue 2/5 station was burned down? Damn, that was some sad shit. A subway worker was being robbed and two burglars burned the whole station down. Were those guys ever caught?
Take a look at the post "Bronx Tour" by HorschdMilla - You can see 82 going by on a call. The area was Crotona which figures into the book and so I checked it out and sure enough, there goes 82....
Just got mine, well done firemann57. I agree with am4516 and a small price to pay for something thats been sought after by many for a long time. I first saw this in B/W in 1974 so again thanks to firemann57 for making it available.
i remember i put on my friends helmet who has retired from the FDNTY in 2003, those leather helmets were awesome, except for the fact when leather gets wet, it shrinks, usually giving the guys headaches
My Dad did, he died at age 55 with his buddy a few short years later. I wear my now and so does his buddies son, evan at car fires. Wear your SCBA, check it every shift and stay safe!!
This is great. I remember watching this as a 10 year old and it convinced me even more that I wanted to be a Firefighter someday. I have 29 years in the Fire Service now and currently serve as an Engine Co. Lt. in Central FL.
The book and this film had a big impact on me, too, when I was a young fire fighter. And I've had similar nice e-mails from people on 3 continents who were happy to be able to get this film (ebay item 140341143878). Thanks for the note!
This video is terrific! And expensive? Are you kidding me? Sure, ti's a copy of a very old "movie," but for those of us who read the book and want to know what it was like for Dennis Smith, Engine Co. 82 and Ladder 31, this is an amazing look at that. You'll watch it more than once so it'll end up being no more expensive than your average movie.
this is an extremely expensive DVD , especially as it would appear to be a copy of the origional BBC Everyman documentary, would like it but far too expensive
Guys, people have searched the world over for this film for 30+ years. I found it, brought it back to life, recently bought some great equipment and software to use so that you get the best quality DVD possible from 37 year-old film, and people are thrilled to find it! If you want to watch the same Hollywood movies as everyone else, there are 200 copies of "Backdraft" available on ebay for $10. If you want the real thing, then buy ebay item number 140341143878. Hey, you get free shipping!
@firemann57 no thankies to "Backdraft". I like "Emergency!" reruns myself. Yet the show put a happy face on firefighting and bureaucracy. This rare film is a wonderful find! I am glad you got hold of it. It shows how much firefighting is just plain work.
oddly enough i have this same video, but the opening narrative is different up until the part when Jeremy James comes on. The video all seems to be the same however.
It's the same video. I just thought the excerpt would be more interesting if it started with rigs responding rather than the narrator. currently ebay item 140330124071
The book changed my life.

@tcroce36 I can just imagine. The Ol School guys were tougher than nails, didn't complain about it and committed their life to their trade.
I just wish I was able to just be with, hear the stories, jive, etc and hang around the guys just a bit like you mentioned, in that city and era.
