  • Gays have equal rights. They have the right to marry someone of the opposite sex, just like we heteros do. No one has the right to marry someone of the same sex - not they, and not us. If they demand the right to do that as well, then they are not campaigning for EQUAL rights, but rather for an entirely NEW right to be introduced. That in itself is not illegitimate, but keep the terminology straight, guys: this is NOT a matter of rights being UNEQUAL as it is now.

  • @BanGayMarriage That bit of sophistry was already soundly rejected by the Federal Court that overturned Prop 8.

  • @BanGayMarriage well one thing is for sure punkin - your rationale is so skewed you'd never make a good atheist. which explains a lot. ignore the marriage debate and you'll find that the LGBT community is still denied a myriad of rights ie., the inability to serve in the armed forces. youtube doesn't allow enough "characters" to list all the rights we are denied. but as the old generation passes away and the young take power - legalized discrimination will end and victory will be ours!

  • What do you feel about incest?

  • Fags are MINDLESS THUGS and FILTHY ANIMALS!!! Their inclinations are not inborn: they CHOOSE to be gay by their OWN FREE WILL just because they LOVE SATAN and HATE GOD and GOOD, AMERICAN SMALL-TOWN VALUES!!

  • who peed in HIS cornflakes?

  • @ItIsNotOkayToBeGay U know we have our own way of showing affection u know i really dont care for people like you i dont understand i bet u like lesbians am i right? no offence against lesbians

  • @kin111111111 No, you are *not* right. I am aware that there are many ostensibly anti-gay people who make an exception for lesbians (probably because it turns them on or whatever - I agree with you that such a position is inconsistent and indefensible) but I am *not* one of those people. I condemn all homosexuals equally, whether they are male or female. I don't care what turns off the average porn-watching troglodyte: I just want to make sure you don't get the right to marry each other!

  • @ItIsNotOkayToBeGay That makes no sense at all gay marrage is just the same as a woman and a man marrying just the same sex and really u should leave it alone cuz even if u have a voice it wont change some people opinions and you have no right to call us God haters and satin lovers cz we are who we are and thats all there doing equallity is deserved by everyone

  • @kin111111111 why do you need the governments aproval or documents? Just have a ceremony and get married...

Marraige shouldnt be a government issue or legal contract

  • @PlebScrubber We dont they have no right in telling us who and what we can marry

  • @PlebScrubber true enough. then let's get govt. out of this licensing straight and gay marriages and make the 1038 rights and legal recognitions by the govt. of married couples equally applied with no bias.

  • @bbs5ekata i say the government should have no recognition of any marraige, everyone is seen as an individual... our relationships are none of their concern, it should not affect our rights or our taxation. Even if your not married but live with your partner, the government wants all the details in your tax return...

  • @ItIsNotOkayToBeGay You're a bit late on that.

  • @ItIsNotOkayToBeGay and your a crazy person who talks to himself, forms part of a cult that doesn't follow all the teachings of his religion directly from the bible, and since your an expert on our choice. Tell me since your an expert, when did you chose to ignore your intimate and overwhelming sexual inclination for the same sex and chose to become straight.

Just because you have some values doesn't make them good ones, saying your from a small town is irrelevant.

  • Huzzah Iowa!

  • I O W A !!!

  • M A I N E !!! (my home state)

  • sigh.

  • What is wrong with the LA Times?

I saw another article written by Joanna Lin and Jessica Garrison that said, "Some protesters [at the Mormon temple in LA] likened Proposition 8 to a civil rights issue."

... as if it weren't a civil rights issue!!!

I contacted both of them and received a semi-literate response from Ms. Lin claiming it was an innocent mistake and that the text had been corrected.

Memo to the Times: Don't lose that AP feed just yet. Your writers aren't quite up to snuff.

  • You are welcome at my table any day.

  • but put in less than 5% of the vote.

Yes the US does, "provides equal rights to pursue life, liberty, and happiness"

  • Does domestic partnership or civil union qualify the couple to file a joint income tax return or get social security survivor benefit? No. Would married couples willingly give up those rights? Of course they wouldn't. So, domestic partnerships aren't just as good as marriage. We lost the battle but the war ain't over yet. Equal rights = marriage rights.

  • the courts are there to protect minorities from the tyranny of the majority-so you idiots who want to attack go right ahead it is your right but it is also our right to have a voice-gays exist-get over it.

  • Get that ego checked, friend. Looking kinda A) mistaken B) rude C) misinformed D) blind

  • Gomer...your a fucking cunt!

Get fucked by a rotten biscotti.

  • that is the gayest insult i have ever heard

  • Thank you shmouts. That is the gayest reply I've ever seen. ;)

  • Good job! Thank you for your efforts to keep us organized. I feel the media is trying to redirect our focus suggesting the black and Latino voters are responsible for prop 8 passing. Lets look at percentages of voters and a different picture will come to light. I also get the impression the media was portraying us like children or some form of entertainment. Thanks for mentioning our struggle is on both State and Federal level.

  • IRK us all!

  • You have recognition of the government with unions with all the same benefits. By coming onto religious turf, you are intruding on the rights of others. You are not a minority...sexual orientation, as far as the decision to act on it, is a choice. The State Supreme Court was NOT appointed by the people - they are unelected officials who clearly overstepped their bounds.

  • The purpose of the supreme court is to prevent "mob rule" where by a democratic majority tramples on the rights of a minority group. They are fully in the right to overturn Prop 22 and I have confidence they'll also overturn Prop 8.

Nobody chooses who they are attracted to; yet you choose to be a homophobic bigot...why?

  • OK, Thanks for your comment. Here's lot of info:

Civil Unions do not cover all the rights marriage does all at once. There's 1038 of them.

What religious turf? All we're asking is for the State to afford us the same piece of paper and legal standing everyone else gets. What your religions does is its own provenance. Marriages between same sex couples will/have not affect the affairs of any church.

  • No, it's not a choice. The research reveals it is genetic in origin.

The people elect the legislative representatives. The reps. nominate and approve the judges as per the will of their constituents. The current State Supremes are majority conservative, including the ones who ruled 22 unconstitutional.

Their bounds are ruling on all law according to the standards set by the constitution. Where that needs interpretation they are the constitutionally appointed arbiters.

  • Wrong, genetic's is handed down from your parents. to say that then 2 men must have had a baby. but they hasn't even been a man having a baby. So genetic's is out. Was disproved years ago. Like 5 minutes after the first gay person said, "it's genetic".

So far the only finding has been and will always be, choice.

  • You'll pardon me if I am skeptical of your understanding of genetics. Googling the research will yield a plethora of contradictory information for your consideration.

And were it not so, and were it a choice, what of it? There is nothing inherently negative in being gay, unless you are fundamentalist Christian, Jewish or Muslim. The Constitution allows us to pursue our lives in liberty. We are saying this law must also follow this intention for equality.

  • It's not genetic, LOL. If it was genetic everyone would be heterosexual.

There are several biological factors however that have been scientifically proven.

  • If you want to call choice, biological factors or scientific proof.

  • A choice is choosing to be a religious zealot, such as choosing to live a Mormon lifestyle.

I think Mormons would be upset if people legislated against the LDS church and denied the right to "temple" marriage. True Believer Mormons (tm) feel their religious lifestyle is not a choice while the rest of us realize that it is a choice.

Sure, gay people can choose to live in denial of their attractions and lead a life of abstinence but that is a poor decision when one can live life to the fullest.

  • LOL D on'y worry about the Mormons, worry about the non-Mormons. Being more of us non-Mormons voted YES on prop8.

Worry more about the Muslims(you know, the ones that hang gays)the a handfull of Mormons.

  • The mormons funded over 70% of the pro-prop8 campaigns...most of it from outside of California.

I don't live in Iran, and while I am saddened that being gay over there is a literal death sentence, I live in the united states which supposedly provides equal rights to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. Those rights become usurped by religious dogma getting legislated against those who do not have the same beliefs.

  • So where is the problem.

You have the right to pursue life (not be hung for being gay)

You have the right to liberty (of being butt slammed every night by another man)

You have the right to happiness (if happiness is being butt slammed every night)

As i have that right too, but I have made the choice to have sex with women.

I never even knew the mormons had anything to do with it till after Nov4. Then YT was full of gays protesting churchs. I don't need the church to tell me it's wrong.

  • I'm not male, I'm bi not gay, I'm not in a same-sex relationship and I have no interest in anal sex.

Gay people have RELATIONSHIPS...you don't think about your parents having sex in their bedroom so why do you focus your energy on gay men fucking each other in the ass? Your view of gay people is based on your "eww, anal sex is gross" point of view.

Guess what, heterosexual couples have anal sex too, and they are allowed to get married.

  • LOL

    homosexual

    fag

    fagot

    lesbian

    bisexual

Are all gay.Just because you are willing to have sex with a woman one night, then get butt slammed the next nigh. Doesn't mean your not gay, just because you had sex with the woman the night before. Just means you'll take you gay ass over and have sex with the woman the next night.

At leats the gay men only have a leg to stand on, you don't.

But don't give you free pass to heaven, just because you got the right gender every other night.

  • I told you already that I'm female, not gay, not in a relationship with another woman, and that I don't have any interest in anal sex. You are just trying to pick a fight by being a homophobic asshole. I'm guessing that the only sex you ever have is from shoving a butt plug up your ass and masterbating to gay porn. Take your bigoted shit elsewhere and shut the fuck up.

  • If it make you feel better. Have another woman you you licking another womans crotch or going through the motion of having sex with dildos in hand, Yep that makes you gay.

Just because you made the chioce to lick one night then have so guy jump your bones the next doesn't mean your not gay. Then be back gay marriage to boot. Yep your gay.

Just face it, you're just Heterophobic. Who knows, scare you might end up with kids, getting marriage to a man, grow old together, then die.

  • I'm monogamous and not the least bit promiscuous. I have never had a one-night stand and I don't "flip-flop" between men and women.

Again, you don't give a flying fuck about RELATIONSHIPS...do you judge when your parents have kinky sex? Do you judge when your coworkers enjoy cosplay or bdsm behind closed doors? No, you only choose to pick fights with gay people.

The only reason you'd do this is that you have repressed same-sex attractions and it pisses you off that you can't get laid.

  • You're just jealous because I can live my life as I choose and not be sexually repressed, but you couldn't get laid even if the survival of the human species was at stake.

FYI lots of hetero men lick pussy and lots of hetero women suck dick. Yet you don't go around denying marriage rights to straight people for engaging in oral sex.

You know what makes YOU gay? The fact that you shove one finger up your ass to tickle your prostate, while masturbating to the "what what in the butt" music vid.

  • My bad I didn't know you was a teenage kid till just a while ago. We were speaking of men with men and women with women.

How men think they are women and how women think they are men. And jusr as sick. Men that think other men are women as well as women that think other women are men.

That is a sickness that there is only 2 cures for. 1 will give happines the other death.

  • I'm 30 and have no gender confusion unlike you. When I date women I don't think they're men and when I date men I don't think they're women. The only one confused here is you. There are three cures for homophobia; education, developing empathy, or not repressing your own same-sex feelings. The only people who die for their orientation are those either murdered by assholes like you or driven to suicide due to religious dogma and/or their family disowning them.

  • For many happiness is getting married to their life partner, a right which is denied by bigots like you.

  • The only reason you'd beat the crap out of a gay person is because you're gay and can't stand the fact that other people live their lives while you fear and repress your same-sex attractions.

Homophobia is not fear of gay people but fear of homosexuality; since you fear your own homosexuality then you're clearly homophobic.

Must suck to hate yourself so much as to bully others to feel good about yourself.

If anyone ought to consider "curing" their problems with suicide, it is you.

  • The last ditch effort of gays. The call the non-gays gay. I have been hearing it for years. You're out of ammo.

Next gay person please step up.

  • Do you also beat women and children? If so, then you have an inferiority complex that drives you to violence.

The only other explanation is if you were raped or molested by a pedophile as a child and instead of turning into a pedophile yourself you go around and beat up gay people because you are too stupid to tell the difference between the asshole that raped you and some random gay person.

If you don't fall into either category you're gay, and in any case you should be rotting in jail.

  • You shouldn't put bible quotes on your web page. You are not Christian.

Jesus said "judge not lest ye be judged" and "love thy neighbor as thyself", not "beat the shit out of gay people".

  • Homophobia exists. -_-

It no longer simply means "afraid of gays". Definitions change. Like the word "gay". It used to mean happy. Yeah.

And yes, there are such people who are literally afraid of gay people. No exageration. I know such people.

  • A phobia is somethjing one is deathly afraid of. They will kill to get away from afraid.

But to be say has Homophobia. You saying they are so afraid they would run away from.

But just as much, a gay man could be said to have Manphobia. so afraid of being a man they try the best to be a woman.

  • Gay people continue to be killed, beaten and abused for the fact that they are gay. Iran hanged two teenagers for being gay. This seems to me to qualify for your standard of "so afriad they will kill to get away from".

Gay men, by and large, are not "manphobic" because they do not try to be women. I'd give a more detailed comparisin, but I don't like to use sexually explicit language here.

  • lol my ass off ur so right! im gay and id HATE to act or change my gender! but im completely alright with transgender, i know how they feel everyday!

  • my problem is that you guys are trying to impose your life style on us, and just like black if we don't agreed with you, you people go out and call us haters,I don't care that you're gay I think that is between you and god, one day you'll have to answer to him, so is not for me to judge you, but I don't like the attitude of you telling me to shut up and accept your life style.

  • The only one imposing their lifestyle choice is the religious people imposing their dogma on non-believers through legislation.

  • okay, but what rights are you exactly fighting for, because is my understanding that the most important rights are recognize in the domestic partnerships, I just don't get it what rights could be so important that you guys are doing all this protesting, and don't say that is religion's fault I'm christian and don't care wether you are gay or not,I think that is something between god and you.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your question.

1st, I want to thank you for your noble recognition of our differences, but our right to each other's differences while living in the same country.

There are 1,038 rights afforded to married couples by law. Civil Unions don't cover all of them. It's also a matter of cultural equality: would you be at peace having your marriage relegated to "civil Union" status?

  • We all grew up knowing that when you love and commit to someone, you marry them. Though ours has one physical difference, the rest is the same, the commitment, the love, the life together in commitment.

Gay people are People. They do feel angry and insulted when asked to settle for something slightly less than what everyone else does by law. Like they are not quite real, not quite people.

  • I am sorry if anyone has told you to "shut up". I do not agree with such treatment. There is room in America for us to disagree and co-exist. As long as the government treats us even handedly.

  • It appears that the correct link is latimes(dot)com / lanow (instead of latimes(dot)com / now)

Can you please link in the sidebar of this video to the specific article is debunking the polls showing a heavy yes vote by African-Americans?

  • I am Mormon and voted for Prop 8. Just wanted to say that although we are on opposite sides of this issue, you seem like a very polite a nice person.

It's almost like i want to cry over this issue....many great people like you and my brother are gay....deep down i just feel marriage is between a man and a woman...

if i can end this with a positive note...the exit polls showed the younger generation supports gay marriage... in like 10-25 years gay marriage...

  • You do realize that not all Mormons feel as compelled as you do to conform to Thomas Monson's homophobia, right? Even Steve Young has been a vocal opponent to Prop 8 and similar measures. You won't get in trouble with God for refusing to deny rights to gay people.

Just watch some videos on noprop102mormons(dot)blogspot(dot)com

Then read some articles on newordermormon(dot)org

If you really loved your brother, you'd not vote away his rights just because your church guilt trips you into it.

  • While you're at it, poke around affirmation(dot)org too.

I think that the LDS church is making a huge mistake by supporting Prop 8 and similar measures. Eventually they are going to come around and accept gay people just as they eventually came around and accepted black people. I'm thinking that if things continue as they are, the LDS Church will formally recognize gay people by 2040 or 2060. They'll probably let gays marry in their temples by 2100. They have a long history of changing policy.

  • Thank you for yoru kind words. I do want to let you know that I feel you are perfectly welcome to the definition of marriage in which you believe. That's the beauty of America, divergent, even opposing beliefs may co-exist. However, I urge you with respect to consider that our Government must care for all of our needs, so it must allow us both our definitions of marriage.. you to practice yours, and I mine.

  • The yes side had the leverage to enforce its definition on me; I pray had I the leverage, I would never enforce my definition on you or anyone else.

  • I am not gay, been married 36 years this Dec. Men/Women get divorced at the drop of a hat, there's nothing holy about this thing we call marriage. It's a contract. Mormons used to teach polygamy and Muslims still practice it - it's in the bible - it's currently illegal but happens here. Why do you want to prevent other people the joy and headache of marriage? If you make it religious, do you kill off all the young people who have sex before marriage? cuz that's bible too. time to change.

  • I, myself, do not live in California, so, sadly I can not march by your side. But--And this is a VERY big But--I will pray for our nation to finally allow for the LGBTQ people to have equality under the law.

You are very clever and insightful, I applaud you. You remind me of someone I've seen before...but I have no idea who...

You don't happen to have a sister, do you?

  • Good to know about African Americans' polling demographics were off. I have tons of straight black friends and they all voted NO.

  • The more I have learned of our history, the more ashamed I am of what has been done to the least of all people. I ache for the Land of the Free, I mourn the illusions I grew up with. Justice doesn't exist but I desire it more than food or water. I am so angry - not just for gays but for every child that has to struggle just to grow up - to be accepted for the color of their eyes, their inner needs, the hypocrisy that they will have shoved down their throats.

  • how the fuck do you know that? because they told you? you sound like pauline kael in 1972 "how did nixon win?! I dont know anyone who voted for him!"

  • At least 30% of black people voted no on prop 8. I know what my friends did because I discussed the issue with them. My black friends are not gay they nor are they homophobes.

  • it's now known he stuffed the ballot box among other tricks. Remember Watergate?

  • It's a shame that equal rights aren't very equal. My local newspaper failed to mention Obama's win in it's Wednesday edition - as if ignoring it would end it. They did manage to print that McCain/Palin won the state - bigotry is alive and well - and it stinks.

  • The so-called "equal" rights of domestic partnerships doesn't protect you from testifying against your spouse, doesn't provide tax benefits such as being able to pay for your spouse's education without it being considered a "gift", doesn't allow one to cover their spouse on their insurance at the same rates, etc. So it costs significantly more to have a domestic partnership than a marriage, and is a lot more work and money to have the same kind of protections for life events.

  • Enig - I live in Oklahoma. As a kid, English boys threw rocks at me and called me a yank - I was 7-10 yrs of age back then. I wasn't referring to domestic partnership - I was referring to rights - and I am not sure they exist fully for anyone. Men beat wives, blacks denied jobs, sexual harassment, wealthy vs poor, corporations over individuals. I am in favor of human rights - hang in there - it will happen.

  • I agree; in America at a minimum human rights should be a priority, otherwise it's just lip service to call us "the land of the free".

  • It sure has felt like "the land of the rich" to me lately -

  • If by rich you mean people with a net worth over $100 million then I definitely agree.

  • enig - rich is always relative. When I think of my husband's job, how much we owe on our house, how much debt we have, how we live - compared to millions of other people worldwide, I am rich indeed compared to those who have so little. Comparied to one who has a mere networth of $1M, I am poor as dirt. It just seems that cities displace landowners at will, white collar crime goes unpunished, celebrities get rehab, we get jail and no one speaks up cuz of the worth value placed on life.

  • (((hugs))) I hear you, just try to focus on the positive :)
