Well....Mastodon has created another masterpiece in the discography again, now I have the hard job to fringe out where The Hunter ranks in my my top 10 metal albums of 2011. Plus we still have Absu, Megadeth, and Animals as Leaders coming out this fall. My head hurts...........
Leviathan was a concept album, idiot. This is a bad album for a great band. It is not hard, not metal, it lacks all the raw energy and power from the previous titles. I like Crack the Skye, but it was a sign of their transformation, and not a good one. They need to take a step back. And dude, cmon you sound like a paid mouthpiece for them, and quite frankly, its disgusting. And it is a very commercial album, and there are no highlights. I award you with no stars, and the album maybe a 6.
I'm totally going to totally troll this comment box and say I agree with you about Mastodon because I absolutely love them. However, who the fuck cares what you think. Anyways, feel free to call me names other people, I don't care and probably won't check up to see what people are saying. Like I said just trolling, hate on haters. :)
dude laviathan had a theme it was about moby dick and sea battling beasts check the lyrics of Island or seabeast or even hearts alive not to mention obviously blood and thunder.
basically... classic rock, stoner and metal. let's not forget radio friendly as well. i think bands like this are catching on to the new wave of metal and the future of radio as well. good stuff. i hear some influences and differences in the songs is good too.
I like the album. its technical master piece. but as a metal fan but its not really what i was looking for in a mastodon album. good album but i wish they would go the opposite direction and go back to there roots.
I feel really weird about this album. Incredibly different, and many songs are a little to pop-like. Creature Lives is just shit. I'm sorry. It is. Unless I'm missing something, it's terrible.
I think what some people fail to realise is that Mastodon arguably intentionally put out an album with no concept, no sense of direction, and yet it still works with the rest of their catalogue. I read somewhere that Brann had a concept all worked out and Brent said "God, do we really have to do all that again?" and Brann was kind of relieved he'd said that, so they scrapped it. I think a fourth concept album may have been a bit much. This is just a really fun album, and I love it.
its funny, i havent followed metal in years. i mostly like prog and classic rock. but mastodon is so good i cant even consider them metal. they are prog, but they are heavier than any prog bands to the point of being considered metal. but they have atmosphere and epicness, like pink floyd. they are awesome
Good review. I can't quite agree with the producer part having nothing to do with their sound. We all know what happened to Metallica with Bob Rock. Stripped down. And this album is stripped down, just like you said. It is extremely creative and different for them, and had tons of potential. But wasted potential by this new producer, just like Bob Rock did.
your right man Mastodon can´t do anything wrong even if they try !!it´s a unique band for me the best off the planet they are going to live forever long live Mastodon
@Napalm66 oh man how long did it take you to write that? did you have to use spell check or ask mommy or daddy for help with spelling words? Awwww how cute of you middle age balding fat white guy with no life.I will leave you alone so you can go it permission from mommy to go play dungeons and dragons.LOL
@EstacadoConstantine You are the culmination of stolen, ripped off trends and fads...I can see why an original comment was way out of your league and all I got was this regurgitated late 90's troll rate trite. Continue to rip off and borrow others material, perhaps one day you'll fool yourself into believing you're somebody other than the token black guy trying to fit in with the white kids...porkchop. Its obvious why a fat kid with a lisp would love this album, you want metal to go gay.
@Napalm66 And you are the culmination of two very ugly, retarded, inbred people having sex.LOL.Original enough for you? Continue to play dungeons and dragons, drinking caprisuns while beating off to female world of warcraft characters.Im pretty that is the totality of your existence.Im also not gay but you probably wont know what that because you have never been with a girl in your whole life.PS: Most of my friends are black and hispanic. So be quiet token dickhead LOL
@EstacadoConstantine nom nom nom the bait fatboy...come at me with more junior high shit bro...I've never anything so clever! Your intellect must be that of a monkey huh porkchop?
@Napalm66 you know this is interesting.I never knew limp dick faggots like yourself had enough intelligence to wipe their own ass let alone use the internet LOL
This album has just about everything of goodness you'd want on a Mastodon album. I was worried that this one would be their fall from greatness album and dammit, I'm happy as fuck that isn't so. This is probably their most varied album. Great review, man. And yes this will definitely be in my top 5 at the end of the year. And I will definitely pick this up next Tuesday morning!
Thanks for the review man. I can't wait to get the preorder package in the mail. Also, I agree that Crack the Skye is more audibly accessible to people. It's the album that I first fell in love with for Mastodon before exploring their other incredible works.
Loved Curl of the Burl first time I heard it. The odd thing though is it kept reminding me of bands that are on Relapse Records today i.e. Red Fang. Maybe what the band are really trying to say is I WANT TO GO HOME.LOL.
Leviathan actually does have a concept being that it is water themed. More specifically, it is lyrically based on the book Moby Dick. Remission: Fire, Leviathan: Water, Blood Mountain: Earth, Crack the Skye: Air, The Hunter: Nothing
@misterhustle1388 i should write a concept album based on nothing. it would include song titles like "This Song is about Nothing" and "This Song is Also about Nothing" as well as "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Which Was Nothing."
@coverkillernation I think "The Hunter"'s concept actually is what would happen if Isis' producer worked with a band for a few albums, then handed the band off to Pearl Jam's producer for an album, and then handed it off to the guy who wrote "In Da Club" and the band somehow managed to internalize all those divine influences to become an emotional, progressive, dirty, gangster thug metal band. Really fucking awesome.
@misterhustle1388 Was it ever confirmed that these albums are intentionally element themed? The only people i've heard this from are just a couple of random fans...
@misterhustle1388 Well, actually, to somewhat correct you there. Wood, I believe, is actually considered an element for the Japanese, and I know that they said theres no concept, but that could've possibly just been a beginning concept, and then they went off the tangent.
