  • People like what they like. I wonder how much their next album will deviate from this one...

  • Best band to come out of the 2000s!

  • great review!! i totally agree dude!

  • Leviathan had a concept.

    Remission didn't have a concept.

    GREAT review, though.

  • I love your reviews, man.

  • @chronicas420 this comment sucked, that is all sir.

  • Well....Mastodon has created another masterpiece in the discography again, now I have the hard job to fringe out where The Hunter ranks in my my top 10 metal albums of 2011. Plus we still have Absu, Megadeth, and Animals as Leaders coming out this fall. My head hurts...........

  • mastodon has never written a bad album.

  • Leviathan was a concept album, idiot. This is a bad album for a great band. It is not hard, not metal, it lacks all the raw energy and power from the previous titles. I like Crack the Skye, but it was a sign of their transformation, and not a good one. They need to take a step back. And dude, cmon you sound like a paid mouthpiece for them, and quite frankly, its disgusting. And it is a very commercial album, and there are no highlights. I award you with no stars, and the album maybe a 6.

  • Cool review, if u like mastodon check out austere voyeur

  • Fan from lifesblood to the hunter one of the best bands out there bout time people started to give them some cred. o wait...

  • I think he meant Remission was the only one that wasn't a concept album

  • I'm totally going to totally troll this comment box and say I agree with you about Mastodon because I absolutely love them. However, who the fuck cares what you think. Anyways, feel free to call me names other people, I don't care and probably won't check up to see what people are saying. Like I said just trolling, hate on haters. :)

  • I'm pretty sure Leviathan WAS a concept album..

  • dude laviathan had a theme it was about moby dick and sea battling beasts check the lyrics of Island or seabeast or even hearts alive not to mention obviously blood and thunder.

  • basically... classic rock, stoner and metal. let's not forget radio friendly as well. i think bands like this are catching on to the new wave of metal and the future of radio as well. good stuff. i hear some influences and differences in the songs is good too.

  • Well delivered, thoughtful review. Nice! SUBSCRIBED

  • I think you completely forgot about Remission...sad face. Hahaha, good review though

  • I like the album. its technical master piece. but as a metal fan but its not really what i was looking for in a mastodon album. good album but i wish they would go the opposite direction and go back to there roots.

  • Nevermind. I gave it another listen. Creature Lives is fucking perfect. After letting the progressive idea sink it, this album is a masterpiece.

  • I feel really weird about this album. Incredibly different, and many songs are a little to pop-like. Creature Lives is just shit. I'm sorry. It is. Unless I'm missing something, it's terrible.

  • I think what some people fail to realise is that Mastodon arguably intentionally put out an album with no concept, no sense of direction, and yet it still works with the rest of their catalogue. I read somewhere that Brann had a concept all worked out and Brent said "God, do we really have to do all that again?" and Brann was kind of relieved he'd said that, so they scrapped it. I think a fourth concept album may have been a bit much. This is just a really fun album, and I love it.

  • Leviathan was inspired by Moby Dick. It is water themed. They said it themselves

  • Fionamorisette Applescent! hahahahahahah!

  • Leviathan was based on Moby Dick.

  • its funny, i havent followed metal in years. i mostly like prog and classic rock. but mastodon is so good i cant even consider them metal. they are prog, but they are heavier than any prog bands to the point of being considered metal. but they have atmosphere and epicness, like pink floyd. they are awesome

  • Complete agree.

  • Good review. I can't quite agree with the producer part having nothing to do with their sound. We all know what happened to Metallica with Bob Rock. Stripped down. And this album is stripped down, just like you said. It is extremely creative and different for them, and had tons of potential. But wasted potential by this new producer, just like Bob Rock did.

  • Leviathan WAS a concept album. Remission wasn't... Probably just a fluke though... Love your review

  • amazing album for sure

  • Really love this review i have yet to listen to it but I fully agree with you said about this band and how they stand to this era.

  • I love your reviews man. subbed

  • Let's smoke some pot bro.

  • your right man Mastodon can´t do anything wrong even if they try !!it´s a unique band for me the best off the planet they are going to live forever long live Mastodon

  • Great review. Fucking love this album.

  • I heard the Curl of Burl. I can't wait to hear the rest!

  • The new Dream Theater album was MEH

  • nice review

  • I'm so looking forward to hearing this. Great review!

  • I cannot wait to listen to this. I will.. "Acquire" this later tonight. Need to review it!

  • file album under not metal

  • @Napalm66 but we will definitely label you under faggot

  • @EstacadoConstantine hi there...overweight lisping fat token black guy, no I won't be accepting your homo erotic advances at this time....move along.

  • @Napalm66 oh man how long did it take you to write that? did you have to use spell check or ask mommy or daddy for help with spelling words? Awwww how cute of you middle age balding fat white guy with no life.I will leave you alone so you can go it permission from mommy to go play dungeons and dragons.LOL

  • @EstacadoConstantine You are the culmination of stolen, ripped off trends and fads...I can see why an original comment was way out of your league and all I got was this regurgitated late 90's troll rate trite. Continue to rip off and borrow others material, perhaps one day you'll fool yourself into believing you're somebody other than the token black guy trying to fit in with the white kids...porkchop. Its obvious why a fat kid with a lisp would love this album, you want metal to go gay.

  • @Napalm66 And you are the culmination of two very ugly, retarded, inbred people having sex.LOL.Original enough for you? Continue to play dungeons and dragons, drinking caprisuns while beating off to female world of warcraft characters.Im pretty that is the totality of your existence.Im also not gay but you probably wont know what that because you have never been with a girl in your whole life.PS: Most of my friends are black and hispanic. So be quiet token dickhead LOL

  • @EstacadoConstantine nom nom nom the bait fatboy...come at me with more junior high shit bro...I've never anything so clever! Your intellect must be that of a monkey huh porkchop?

  • @Napalm66 you know this is interesting.I never knew limp dick faggots like yourself had enough intelligence to wipe their own ass let alone use the internet LOL

  • @Napalm66 huh can you at least state why your putting under not metal makes you seem like a troll

  • @cannibalkid2 it just has a lot more pop elements than anything I like to call metal...see my channel for references...

  • Amazing review man. I couldn't agree more!! Just listened to it a few minutes ago, the entire thing. Such beauty....

PS- YOU SHOULD REVIEW CLERIC'S REGRESSIONS!!!! DOOO ITTTT!! \M/

  • Don't die! :O

  • This album has just about everything of goodness you'd want on a Mastodon album. I was worried that this one would be their fall from greatness album and dammit, I'm happy as fuck that isn't so. This is probably their most varied album. Great review, man. And yes this will definitely be in my top 5 at the end of the year. And I will definitely pick this up next Tuesday morning!

  • Having Unto the Locust and The Hunter both some out around the same time is a dream come true.

  • @brennang9 yeah, but having songs with kidschoirs should be banned. fuck that shit.

  • dream theaters gay mastodon rules!!!

  • @ShroomSamich Calm down, They are both excellent bands.

  • @Anthrax287

ye but one can make music not just play it :)

  • Thanks for the review man. I can't wait to get the preorder package in the mail. Also, I agree that Crack the Skye is more audibly accessible to people. It's the album that I first fell in love with for Mastodon before exploring their other incredible works.

  • Cannot wait to get my hands on this album!

  • Amazing album, but I still don't really like the cover artwork.

  • i didnt like mastodon at first. something turned me off and i dont even know what! but recently i went back in and im hooked!

  • Loved Curl of the Burl first time I heard it. The odd thing though is it kept reminding me of bands that are on Relapse Records today i.e. Red Fang. Maybe what the band are really trying to say is I WANT TO GO HOME.LOL.

  • oh my god, this is your best review. i agreed with every single thing. *slow clap*

  • Will you be reviewing the new Five Finger Death Punch?

  • Leviathan actually does have a concept being that it is water themed. More specifically, it is lyrically based on the book Moby Dick. Remission: Fire, Leviathan: Water, Blood Mountain: Earth, Crack the Skye: Air, The Hunter: Nothing

  • @misterhustle1388 i should write a concept album based on nothing. it would include song titles like "This Song is about Nothing" and "This Song is Also about Nothing" as well as "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Which Was Nothing."

  • @coverkillernation Nice review and it's also nice to see you respond to comments, I never knew you did that.

  • @coverkillernation I think "The Hunter"'s concept actually is what would happen if Isis' producer worked with a band for a few albums, then handed the band off to Pearl Jam's producer for an album, and then handed it off to the guy who wrote "In Da Club" and the band somehow managed to internalize all those divine influences to become an emotional, progressive, dirty, gangster thug metal band. Really fucking awesome.

  • @misterhustle1388

Crack the Skye isn't air, it's aether.

  • @misterhustle1388 Ooor, all of those elements could have been setting the landscape for "The Hunter." Like, the hunter is the apex.

  • @misterhustle1388 Was it ever confirmed that these albums are intentionally element themed? The only people i've heard this from are just a couple of random fans...

  • @Metaalhoofdje123 yes it was! ....btw: crack the skye is about the element ether.

  • @misterhustle1388 Well, actually, to somewhat correct you there. Wood, I believe, is actually considered an element for the Japanese, and I know that they said theres no concept, but that could've possibly just been a beginning concept, and then they went off the tangent.

Either way, I fucking love Mastodon!

  • @misterhustle1388 Crack the Skye was more Space/Astrology related than air.

  • @misterhustle1388 Crack the Skye actually resembles the element of aether, or spirit. Air hasn't yet been represented conceptually... though Call of the Mastodon's cover resembled air aesthetically.

  • Not my absolute favorite Mastodon release, but still pretty sweet. Most likely reviewing it myself. :D

  • just heard it, totally agree, its a damm good album :D

  • can't wait to review this, i'm really digging this album!

  • I love all Mastodon and I can throw The Hunter high on top. Its phenomenal, fun, trippy, and eclectic. Plus Brann Dailor is channeling Neil Peart when he drums, just amazing. I know the sound may divide people, but I love this

  • You hit the nail on the head!

This album is fucking amazing along with along with all there albums. I love how almost every track feels like a journey through one particular sound but some how they manage to not make it sound random or rushed! 9/10 for me and easily top 5 so far this year.

  • I think this album is a 50/50 kinda album, some will think its a masterpiece, others will think its their worst album. Personally, I think its better than Crack the Skye, its an album that will grow on you no doubt.

But you can't beat the awesomeness that is Blood Mountain!

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Black Tongue and Deathbound, but Curl of the Burl left a very bad impression. I will still get this album, but because of the aforementioned song, I have to remain skeptic. Much like Opeth's "Heritage", this singular album might splinter the fanbase.

  • This isn't my favorite album, but I like it. It reminds me of Stag by the Melvins. Its straight up Mastodon Sludge at parts, and quasi radio-friendly acid trips at others. All in all, this is just a fun album.

And Remission was the only non-concept album.

  • you expressed my thoughts exactly about this album, they can do any style they want and make it sound awesome!

  • awesome...also Warbringers World Torn Asunder has been leaked i believe

  • Crack the Skye is a masterpiece and Blood Mountain is amazing too. Probably gonna get this one too.

  • This album sucks DICK

  • @MetalGuy5150 And you dare to call yourself "MetalGuy"?

  • @maalbe987 Just because I thought this album wasn't good I can't call myself "MetalGuy"?(By the way, I fucking hate my username) Hell, my opinion doesn't matter. I just thought this album wasn't the best of Mastodon's work.

  • @MetalGuy5150 Lol. I didn't mean much as that. But I get what you're saying. It's just that the OP came across a little hypocritical at first.

  • @maalbe987 *by that.

  • @maalbe987 Haha I know what you mean. I was just a little disappointed with this album. It'll probably grow on me though. The more I listen to it the more I like it.

  • Didn't really like this album that much.
