I was shocked to hear the word because anything from/about Japan unpopular those days. And talking food on music program? Of course I recognized the song. A bigger shock came from car radio that year was abt JFK 11/22.

I94,Hwy12 & 7 I used to drive every month more than 20 years. I am sure you enjoying life in Taiwan. Lots of happy days to you.

My parents and very grand grandparants would take us fishing at an all night pay lake and they had loudspeakers all around the place that was fed through the juke box in the concession building. This being a #1 hit at the time was played alot, and I fell in love with it. They finally had to buy me the 45rpm when it became to cold to go fishing! Thanks for the post!

That's the trouble with translation: If it's word-for-word, some people complain that the English is stilted and not natural. Wonderfully done. I had not known the circumstances of Kyu chan's death until I notes at the end. When I did, I found I had to hold my own head high to keep the tears from falling. Thank you for honoring and keeping alive the legacy of this great talent.

but in the context of the song it's being used in various ways: "hold my head high (to keep your positive spirit)" + "looking upwards (counting the stars and looking for happiness above the clouds)" + "holding my head upwards (to stop the tears flowing down when you are feeling sorrow)"
so maybe, "looking up" and "holding my head high" and "holding my head upwards" can all be used :)

People would not remember it to ask for it at the store. Why do you need an English version? I have liked this song since it first came out. A friend of my fathers had a Japanese wife which was not common in 1960's Australia. She was amazed that I knew of this song and also liked it.

I went to Concordia Language Village's Japanese village last summer, for international day (where all the different village's meet) we learned and shared this song with the Chinese, Arabic, and Swedish villages, because we were also celebrating CLV's anniversary, which is also the anniversary of when this song came out!

I was around twelve years old in 1963 in the era of transitor radios growing up in a hispanic community in the south side of San Antonio and remember hearing this beautiful song. It will remain as one of the most happiest melodies I ever heard in my life as a kid. It is surprising that such a happy melody with the beautiful whistling part could reflect lyrics of sadness of a lost love. I thank God for the blessing of Sakamoto 's song .

What a beautiful song, brings tears of happiness to my eyes. This is my mother and i's favorite song really. Truly classic, truly timeless, truly divine.
In the 18 years between the end of WWII and the rise of this song, I don't remember a single positive thing said in America about the Japanese. But from this song forward a new relationship between the countries began to develop. Americans began to think of Japan in a more sympathetic way. An example of the enormous effect music can have! At least that's how I remember it - I was 15 at the time.

Why do you need an English version? I have liked this song since it first came out. A friend of my fathers had a Japanese wife which was not common in 1960's Australia. She was amazed that I knew of this song and also liked it.
I lived in china for four years and loved the music there. Some were Chinese versions of English songs but so what - i liked the sound. In fact the best CD I bought in china was by a Korean group called Kyote! Accept nice sounds as just that.

I played this at my wife Kyoko's funeral service back in 1991 and every August for the Obon festival. It says what is in my heart. Now I pray for all those families in Japan that can't even find their family members to have the service for. To all those families... you are in our hearts and minds. ALWAYS

this was truly a great tune,the original tells us what the protagonist is doing and a glimpse of what he is thinking,the english version tells us what he is feeling,the 2 songs combined well what can i say anyone who has ever loved has experienced what he sang about.

I went to Concordia Language Village's Japanese village last summer, for international day (where all the different village's meet) we learned and shared this song with the Chinese, Arabic, and Swedish villages, because we were also celebrating CLV's anniversary, which is also the anniversary of when this song came out!
This song is so beautiful! Great video, though I must admit I find a few of the pictures a bit comedic. =P

I was around twelve years old in 1963 in the era of transitor radios growing up in a hispanic community in the south side of San Antonio and remember hearing this beautiful song. It will remain as one of the most happiest melodies I ever heard in my life as a kid. It is surprising that such a happy melody with the beautiful whistling part could reflect lyrics of sadness of a lost love. I thank God for the blessing of Sakamoto 's song .

i love the sukiyaki song by kyu sakamoto. i learned this song in japanese, (i am from germany) that is how much i love this song. to bad kyu sakamoto had to die in an airplane crash. he was very talented.

Sukiyaki has been covered by many recording artists but can't be compared to the
original singer Kyu Sakamotto the number one hit version of the 1960s! I would love to get hold of any of his albums on CD's! I got hold of the single CD with Sukiyaki, an instrumental version of Sukiyaki and another pop song of his which is a Japanese import! Kyu Sakamotto was already a star in Japan before Sukiyaki
became a number one hit in the United States!

Wow ! I always loved this song, but now even moreso since the translation... and it's in gorgeous stereo!
My dad loved it too. He was an Australian POW in Japan 1942-5.
After treatment which was unbelievably shocking, he came to love the Japanese and their culture, as I did.
It should never have happened.
It's all just about understanding differences.

In the 18 years between the end of WWII and the rise of this song, I don't remember a single positive thing said in America about the Japanese. But from this song forward a new relationship between the countries began to develop. Americans began to think of Japan in a more sympathetic way. An example of the enormous effect music can have! At least that's how I remember it - I was 15 at the time.

I grew up on lands that were once hunted by the kiowa, the apache, the comanche, the shoshone... I understand freedom and service to country...
