No one's perfect, but if I really weigh out the pro's and con's, I'd say Measha is going to make for some pretty decent opera in the years to come. The voice is big, the timbre is warm, and from what I've heard from other recordings, her phrasing is very polished and elegant. I'll let her pass on the diction...for now
Shrill to some is vibrant and alive to others! I think its the clear strength and power of her voice. Might be the next great Wagnerian and Strauss interpreter. She has something of the indomitable vocal resilience of a niellson, who sounds horrid doing this aria btw.
OMG shut up about her diction...maybe its not correct but her rendition is beautiful. I have heard many other so called reputable sopranos do MUCH WORSE and receive the praises of the house...The power and the poise of this performance is amazing and credit is due her.
Diction is not good, the voice hasnt Bit, And why she always curtsey? Is she reharsed the introduction to the Queen. Shes more a Mezzo not a soprano (A FALCON)...The nvoice becomes shrill....WHY WHY WHY ITS NOT GOOD....
Great voice but this aria has defeated many a singer... Good luck to her for the future and would love to hear the Mahagonny she's currently performing
I love Measha. She and I come from the same town in eastern Canada and in our student days performed at the same concert - I played a Rachmaninoff prelude and she sang Amazing Grace with variations.
I have to admit I had never heard of Measha Brueggergosman before, but I hope to in the future!
I am not really bothered about her diction(which actually isn't that bad). There are very few singers who can make Mozart dramatic enough without destroying the vocal line, but she does it.
Well done Measha,I hope we get to hear more of you in the future, and that you achieve the success you obviously deserve.
How important a diction could be? For God sake! you might have something else (personal I guess ) against her, diction must not be such an important fact when it comes to a voice like hers.
What Kind of comment is this? What does that have to do with her wonderful voice and her performance? Try to sing this aria yourself and post it on youtube i'd really like to see you sing this.
LOL I'm not insulting her. Nor did I ever make a comment about her singing and I don't have to. She's very nice in person. I can make whatever comment I like. Save the overly-defensiveness for someone else please.
I think that this is much better than some of the Elettra's I have heard here. Yes the Italian is suspect, but overall the voice is very well rounded. I used to do this aria years ago (when I was pregnant and a little off) and am working on it now 3 kids later (now that I am truly insane....) Kudos to the sopranos who do this aria justice.
I saw her here in SF sing some Mahler with the symphony and she was lovely. This isn't as terrible as some of the queens on here say (it never is) but the diction is not good -- some great singers have had shitty diction (Sutherland) and it doesn't sound well supported. It might be the weight loss. We need more fat singers, not fewer. Its opera, not soap opera
I am reading all of these negative reviews and I have to wonder if those who are so critical actually have successful opera careers? I feel that those who are not working working opera singer have no idea what it takes and the amount of work one puts into their singing voice. I feel that unless you are an opera singing that works on a regular basis, you should keep your negative comments to yourself.
I hear what you're saying, but I'm not sure it's altogether fair. It's not really fair to tell someone that if they can't sing opera at a professional level, then they're not entitled to giving negative reviews. That's like saying we're not allowed to criticize Shakespeare b/c we'd never have his talent. Art is meant to be received. It's interesting...you mention no 'negative' reviews, but positive reviews by non-opera singers are allowed? Criticism is fine, so long as its well explained.
As an opersinger myself I have to absolutely agree with atlantaguy29. Does anybody except a colleague know what it takes to sing this? How much work is put before you can sing at least a little bit like Measha Brueggergosman? Who in my opinion is a great singer with a beautiful and stunning voice!
With respect, I think your suggestion can lead to elitism. You can't tell a class of people less skilled than Brueggergosman that they can't have an opinion on her singing. Most singers at her level sing better than their vocal teachers, yet, pedagogically speaking, their coaches are probably in a better position to speak about beauty of tone or technical skill etc. I love her voice.I don't agree with those criticizing her, but I do defend the principle to offer an opinion -opera singer or not.
I didn't mean to be elitistic at all, sorry for giving this impression! You're right by saying that having an opinion is totally right! (I tried to write a second reply, but the site crashed on my computer). But having an opinion and just commenting on mean and/or disrespectful levels isn't really what all this should be about. I'm totally with you in saying criticism is fine, but it has to be well explained. Can we meet at that point?
And: I've read soooo many mean and not explained and not reflected things here, so I sometimes tend to be a little short-tempered when I read things like I've read here about M.B. and other singers whom I like. ;-)
Sorry but I have heard a lot of Sopranos sing this aria, and it sits in such a place that few if any can have a "perfect diction" The aria is wild, mad, crazy, fast, everything works against the diction. The important thing here is sound and emotion. That is, in my opinion, one of the main differences in opera and songs. As far as the singing being healthy or unhealthy, many of Mozarts soprano arias can push a soprano to the limit Sometimes its nice to hear a singer just go for it
Her singing has improved a lot. It was always rather vanilla before - like, good, but nothing to write home about. But her diction is deplorable. There are whole words missing! One of the textual slurs is wrong, too. You can change text underlay in bel canto, but not in Mozart!
why is everyone voting down those who enjoy the music? Some people actually enjoy her, im one. I loved her larger and her now smaller. If she stuck with the larger there would have been some MAJOR health risks. Im proud of her. She was posted in the Toronto Star back in early winter...
