  • Oh: while the dust+glue trick is clever and resourceful, I really wasn't happy with the result. It was the color of coffee with cream when I applied it, but it dried almost black.

  • @plumbersteve: I actually just did a project about the same size using the exact same machine. I was surprised to see that the built-in vacuum picked all but about 1-2 cups of the dust, and barely left any floating around the room.

Hint: buy extra sanding pads. They go quickly. And make sure you THOROUGHLY sand any spots you've glued. The glue does a good job at rejecting any finish.

  • man, that's a great video!! really makes it look like something that I can handle, having installed prefinished hardwood over about 550sqft and building a mantle over my fireplace. Question...how much dust was produced? because in this video, it sure didn't seem like a really dusty job.

    Thanks!!

  • Thanks Bill.. I am hoping to refinish my hardwood soon.

  • Really good video, thanks so much~!!

  • Excellent video! I even have a hole to fill also! Very thorough and well done. Thank you for pointing out the type of sander too.

  • thanks for the great video! i have hardwood oak floors in my farm house that im going to refinish. Do you suggest to strip the floor of the old varnish/wax before sanding? or does the sander do a good enough job at taking it all off without gumming up the sanding disc to bad?

  • Thank you very helpful and educational video.

  • keep up the great work

  • quRTER SHEET POND SANDER URE SOOO RIGHT ON GREAT VIDEO BRO

  • great vid thank you so much i love these 34 grit 50 grit exactly wat i needed

  • Great video!!!

  • Thanks for this video. You made it very plain and simple to understand. We are about it move into a house that needs to have the floors refinished and i have no idea how to go about it but i wanted to help my man with this project. Thank you and i will be keeping up with you for other project information! :) Oh 1 more Q : Did you ever rip up the rest of the carpet like you wife wanted? Lol.

  • This video completely trivializes the art of refinishing hardwood. Your process is weak at best. Lucky for you, you only had some 40 sq ft. to sand. Times what you did by 100 then make a video you worthless hack. Fyi your filler you made for the nail holes is too lite in color.

  • We just used your video ! Thank you so much for posting your video ! Do you have website- or are you on facebook ? Thank you again, The Dolan's Wauwatosa, WI 11/22/11 16:43

  • Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

  • You are great, explain really good everything, I appreciate it thank you

  • This is awesome!! I am going to try and do this with my children running around while my husband is at work (obviously not all in one day). *I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.* Thank you for making this video. I think it's going to be my guide through the whole process. haha!

  • Really great video! We just bought an old farm house and it needs complete refinishing of the floors. You made it look painless!

  • Excellent video. I've been procrastinating this project because I thought it would be more difficult. Very helpful video. Thanks!

  • Excellent video, thanks for all this great information.

  • Extremely helpful!!! We are getting ready to refinish ours, which are not in the best shape, and they repair tips were very handy! Hope ours turn out as nice as yours did! :-) Looks great!

  • thanks so much for this!!! my husband and i just moved into a new place with wall to wall carpeting, but luckily there is hardwood underneath! something tells me you made this look easier than it's going to be for us, but this was an infinitely useful tutorial!!!

  • Great video!! I am not the best of handymen but this made me feel like trying one of our rooms!!!

  • WOW Probably the best self help video I have seen on here! Thank you!! Can't wait to get started!!!

  • Great Video. Short and clear. All How to Videos should be so.

  • Thanks for the awesome video. I just ripped up my carpet this evening (I already had a good idea of what needed to be done) and your video really provided some excellent tips. I agree with some of the other comments-- one of the best how-to-videos... period!

  • Great video! I live in Whittier, CA (LA area) and I can not find a sander like the one you used anywhere. Any suggestions as to where I can rent one in my area?

    Thank you

  • We have hardwood floors in our house that we are planning on refinishing, but one large section has extensive water damage and is splintering. The house is 97 years old, as are the floors, and we have actually had to have one of our kids have surgery to remove a splinter from her heel :-( Any suggestions for the water damage area? The room is 20x22 ft, and is right next to the living area, which is 18x22 ft. The floor is Oak. Thanks!

  • No buffing or sanding between finishes?

  • My 5yr old son has allergies and is asthmatic. Doctor highly recomended removing carpet. By chance, my 1956 home has original red oak floors. Unfortunately, previous owners decided to lay the carpet pad with generous amounts of adhesive and hundreds of staples. I've removed all the staples, but was wondering if I need to remove the adhesive residue, or will the sander be able to glide over these areas? It is still quite "sticky" Thanks.

  • Love you this vid, gonna really help me do my floors... had to subbed u :)

Once again Thanks sooooooo much! :)

Please keep doing vids, hopeful U can do one for building decks

  • Great video!! One of the best how-to videos, period. I'm not just talking about for redoing hardwood floors either.

  • One of the best video on this project. A couple of things you forgot though. For example what about the walking-pattern stain removing?

  • Very well put together. Thank you!!

  • @paramagicmike A temporary fix is to sprinkle unscented talcum powder or powdered graphite on the joint. Work the powder into the gap by stepping on the area. A more permanent fix is to locate where the squeak is, drill a pilot hole at a slight angle & drive a trim screw into the pilot hole, sinking the screw head slightly below the floor's surface. Fill the hole with wood putty or a mix of sawdust and wood glue. Smooth with a putty knife. Use a good quality wood glue when making a woodfiller.

  • How do you recommend fixing the squeaks/boards with movement? Also, did you just use like elmers white school glue for the mix with the sawdust?

  • Im refinishing my girlfriends mothers floors in the next few weeks and I'm on a very tight budget....Would it be a ridiculous undertaking to attempt to sand a living room, 12' by 19' with a regular handheld belt sander?? There also a few boards with a significant gap in between them, do you have any good tips for filling in these gaps, I'm not sure if filler would be a good fix for something like that or not......And great video, very informative.

  • @torotoker It's not ridiculous, BUT it would be difficult & time-consuming to refinish a floor that size with a handheld belt sander. A belt sander is meant for use in a fairly small area--using one on a large floor increases the chance of gouges, dips & high spots in finished surfaces. Considering the amount of time it would take to complete this project by hand & that the finished result will last for years, we feel the value of renting a sander is worth it.

  • @ToroToker First, you'll want to determine the reason for the gap. Some gaps are caused by the wood shrinking due to lack of moisture in the air in the winter and will go away during the humid months. Other gaps can be filled, but you want to consider how the end result will look-sometimes it makes the floor look worse! A great resource is Floor Covering Installer Magazine.

  • Excellent video!!! Very informative with great information and great ideas on how to handle simple problems. THANKS!!!!!

  • Thahks heaps for this, I want to rip up our carpet tonight and get started!

  • excellent video, thanks for the tips.

  • good video. It was really helpful. I'm going to be refinishing my entire house this summer

  • Great video. Question, could you clean it with a steam cleaner now or will this call for an additional protective coat?

  • @Nahlabaird Although we haven't tried steam cleaning a hardwood floor, it seems the potential for damaging the wood could be great. Considering the many different types of wood flooring now available on the market, we decided to call upon the experts for advice.
