Boyle learnt from her...... and there's no comparision with ruthie.... see the emotion she puts into the song.... susuan has to believe in re-incarnation...... to put life into a song like this
sorry but IMO Boyle's more powerfull mezzo-sorprano voice fits this song better. Henshall has hearable problems holding her voice in some "angry" parts like from 3:11 till 3:20. Boyle sang that part in her first TV appearance amazingly well.
How does this have 50 dislikes??? I'm stunned by her voice (and face admittedly) My heart is in my throat and I see 50 dislikes! Don't understand. Thanks Ruthie
Inspiring to say the least. So beautiful, so true to many lives I believe... A Pro ball player, an astronaut, a Fireman, and so on....... then life, and heartache got in the way. This song has affected me greatly, I wish I have only found it sooner. Today for the first time.
I'm sorry, it's really lovely, it really is, but she sings much too softly for my liking. At the "Tigers Come at Night" she should be growling like a person who gave life their all and got totally screwed but still dreams, y'know? She also doesn't open her mouth really wide, which annoys me because I'm a freak about that. I hope I'm not being rude or anything, this is just my unprofessional opinion.
I don't agree with anyone, lol. She has a trained voice and I can tell by how she uses her voice. This is music from Broadway and people have to hear you in the back row. She knows how to throw her voice out there. She is an excellent singer and probably sounds different from the ones you are used to. Listen to earlier versions of Lupone...she's great. Don't put down Boyle. She sings well and is starting later in life. She does an excellent job. I feel Lea's voice is too light but good.
now i can understand this song by Ruthie Henshall's version , She is wonderful and amazing. She is singing this song from the button of her heart in this Video.
I don't think her expressions were over the top as some people have said, but I do have to agree that she keeps her mouth rather closed for most of the song. Although this just goes to show how strong her voice is! It's a wonderful rendition of the song, and it's going on my favourites list.
@sungmoon1987 I feel her tight jaw actually adds more to the song than distorting it. Remember this is a bourgeois woman trying to keep it together. Probably the best singer of this song I've heard. She's certainly the only one who understands this is an existential tragedy. I'm just waiting for the perfect Fantine. Anne Hathaway, maybe? I don't know.
She has a good voice but it would sound so much better if she opened her mouth a little more. Throughout the song she shows the emotion well, but restricts her voice while doing this.
I loved her interpretation in the 10th anniversary concert much much more and that appearence is the absolutely unreachable classic goldie no one can touch!
I Dreamed A Dream is NOT a "lovely" song! She was trying too much to sound lovely here (well, it IS much better than her TAC voice), but the emotional attack was totally compromised.
@negrotybash It's better than that lapone/boyle crap. I agree this is a tragedy and should only be lovely in it's reminiscence, so it can be crushed by the end. Ruthie seems to have the right idea, but I have yet to see anyone nail this song.
@johnjg536 she's not singing it as a love song, she's just not being over dramatic which might well be a bad thing as it is a song from a musical but meh I prefer it.
you can tell she's not acting. read up on her. she's had a crazy life. look at her face at 2:58-2:59 and 3:13-3:17. she's not acting. she's been through hell.
Boyle learnt from her...... and there's no comparision with ruthie.... see the emotion she puts into the song.... susuan has to believe in re-incarnation...... to put life into a song like this

I feel like she didn't have any passion. She sang it beautifully but I just didn't buy her performance. :/

The problem with this video is that the audio is compressed to hell. No dynamic range at all in the recording, and that's not Henshall's fault.

I like Ruthie performance in this song, but I like more this song sung by Boyle. BOYLE's voice is much better suited for this song.

I thought Susan Boyle could sing, well she can, but talk about OWNING THIS SONG.
WHAT UNEQUALLED PERFORMANCE. I couldn't stop listening to this repeatedly and from her performances at Les Misérables. HOT DAMN IS RIGHT !

she is probably flawed with her enunciation, but she overcompensates with her facial expression... and i admit, ruthie is smokin' in her dress ;)

Beautiful song that's incorrectly interpreted and sung with a weak, ordinary voice. It's supposed to be tragic: this is not a sweet love song.

@johnjg536 personally I prefer realism over melodrama, you obviously do not.
flangered 3 months ago
@flangered Um, your concept of "realism" is singing a tragic song as a sweet, love song? You don't know what you're talking about.
