Had a RR, wonderful breed, beautiful and loving, very family oriented dogs. Would love another one, but too many shelter dogs out there need homes so doubt I'll have another unless a rescue comes available. They are sweet!!!!
@stuntmonkey16 Thank you! Lost my last dog in December, a German Shepherd/RR mix (what a dog!!!) and am still grieving for my Duncan. Will definitely check out the rescues. Appreciate your tip. Was just going thru my collection of obedience training trials for my 1st RR. As we all know, RR are not easily trainable...they have their own minds and ways of doing things :) Love them love them!!
We have 3 RR's they make all kinds of crazy noise when play fighting. The newest one ( a year old now) groans when he scratches his ears, growls and grumbles when you move him if he's sleeping...I always get a laugh out of that. It's true, these dogs are the best, very strong though so be aware of that. They can be lazy couch slugs all day, or run in the yard like crazy. Great dogs, I will never have another breed.
@halflifepittsburgh My new boy Jake is just eighteen months now, he too does the groaning when you scratch his ear and funnily enough he grumbles if you move him. My bitch doesn't do this. Jake is huge, a throw back to the Ridgebacks of Africa, over thirty inches to the shoulder and heading for nine stone. A great family dog but no a nonsense dog, as he displayed only the other day with tresspassers, one of whom literraly begged me to put him on the lead.
I've got a 12 YO ridgeback and she's always been a talker. She doesn't do it on command but she quite often likes to have a chat. She's totally adorable, more of a grand old lady these days.
To get Nala to speak on command I introduced a toy that she loved and would bark to get it, so I would introduce the word 'speak' as she barked for the toy gradually removing the toy and eventually she will 'speak' without the toy. I introduced a hand command also. It takes patience as when they don't want to do it for a lessar placed member of the pack you get what has happened in this video with my daughter, Enjoy your Ridgeback, they are the best house dog and companion.

LOl Nala says whatever...yawn...such a typical ridgeback, so independent and hard headed, he he. But we still love them. ;)
