Perfection. Beautiful line, never oversung, spot on intonation, restraint throughout. He truly has no equal that I've heard in this rep. This is the model for how to sing this aria.
Lebewesen. Dafür braucht sie ein reines Herz, ein FEENHERZ. Blut ist dein Name, Schmerz dein Verstand, erblühende Liebe setzt du in Brand 10 werden suchen, Hüter genannt, nutzen die Winde von niemand erkannt.

Cinging mozart is deceptively difficult, and Wunderlich does it with such ease and with the necessary restraint. To my ear, the only other tenor that can compete with Wunderlich in Mozart is John McCormack.
This image is enchantingly beautiful, like no eyes have ever seen. I feel how this G-dly art fills my heart with renewed vitality. Albeit i cannot name this "something" but i feel it burn here like an inferno. Can this be love i feel? Yes yes! 'tis love alone. Oh, if only i could find her! Oh, if only she stood in front of me! I would.. I would.. Heat and purity what would i do?! I would delightedly press her against my warm bosom. Forever mine she would then be...
Most importantly and I'm sure someone pointed out before me: who are the 3 who checked the "don"t like" box??? I imagine it's either because you think he does too much rubato or maybe uses too much headvoice?
If it's the first, you must not be an easy person to live with your textbook concepts and your lack of spontaneity.
If it's the latter, you must certainly not know the full score because you can do every nuance in this aria and it carries wonderfully.
@james35f I bow to the strength and elegance of your argument. It's a simple matter of opinion and personal taste. Incidentally, Goethe himself considered French the language of angels, Italian the language of men, and German the language of beasts. So you see, as far as "absolute cack" goes, I feel I'm in pretty good company.
...the German language really doesn't work for romance, it was made for barking and nothing can be done about it. German poets and artists deserve double respect for their creativity and sensitivity: where others have helpful tools at their disposal, they seem to have more like an obstacle to overcome...

His performances as Tamino in the early 1960s set the standards for that role. No one could surpass Wunderlich except Wunderlich himself - and he actually does that here! His singing here is so good he puts himself to shame.

But...when I played Wunderlich 4d very 1st time...man, was that an experience!!! I found myself saying: This guy's just in a class of his own:) Everything was Gorgeous! The voice, technique, phrasing, diction, etc:) Just amazing!!!
As a German - English American I really enjoy Fritz Wunderlich . He had a tragic life ( like many Germans of my my mothers generation) . But in every age God gifts us with beauty in music and art .
Wunderlich clearly has one of the most beautiful tenor voices for Mozart , I wonder why he never did anything from Cosi? I can imagine how beautiful Un'Aura Amorosa would be in his voice (even if sung in German lol!)
@arturo8402 Un'Aura Amorosa ("Die Odem der Liebe"!) is on a CD set called, aptly in my opinion, "The Very Best of Fritz Wunderlich." And it IS incredibly beautiful. :) Viel Hoervergnuegen!

@skyhunk His death was caused by his falling down a flight of stairs... and it is said that he was drunk at the time. This is unsurprising... as many with a great fist such as his... are plagued by a sensitively which produces is them a great pain... often causing substance abuse. It does not take away, however, from the greatness of his gift....
This has to be one of the most incredible performance ever recorded.. Its a complete shame it doesn't have 12156345645 views.. tragic really.
what perfect technique coupled with such wonderful emotion, you feel amazing just listening.. He moves my heart EVERY TIME he sings
Is their any better than the great german tenor Wunderlich?
Not at this aria, at least for me. I have always been a die hard Bjorling fan.. but I find myself listening to more and more of this wonderful wonderful artist!
This most amazing thing about this video, and anyone who has attempted this aria will agree i believe, is how relaxed and easy he makes singing this aria seem. Mozart is so hard because every note must seem as if one were singing in the shower. Beautiful voice!
exactly! ...I remember 1st hearing this aria live and hating it b/c it seemed so long winded and boring - but now I see the beauty in it after seeing it done by a master. The tenor I saw sing it could hit all the notes, but you could tell he was working his butt off for it whereas Fritz gives the illusion here its nothing which allows for the listener to connect emotionally to singer and what the text is converying
Mr. Wunderlich won't be "delving into [any] Italian repertoire" because he died tragically about 40 years ago in a fall down the stairs. And some of the Italian arias he has recorded were done in his native German.
Is it possible that such a glorious sound can come from a human being's throat (Wunderlich)? Or that such wonderful melodies can spring from the imagination of a human being (Mozart)?
Two of the greatest tenors of the past century (Wunderlich and Bjoerling) both had a natural plaintive quality to their timbres that is ever-so-slightly reminiscent of a crying baby (and I mean this in the best way.) I believe this has the subliminal effect on the human ear of appealing to our urge to nurture. It cannot be just beauty of tone and perfect technique alone that gives us this instinctual feeling of being drawn to Wunderlich's unique vocal timbre. His voice was very special indeed.
I don't understand this " crying baby in the best way" description. Sorry. Perhaps it's more applicable to Radu Marian's singing. And I also mean it in the best way as it's very beautiful but very unusual. I only fully agree with the second part of your comment. I hear Wunderlich's mature man's singing and it's absolutely awesome! He is one of the very best tenors of all time! Bravo!
OK, serenaluce, I'll elaborate: crying baby in the best way = not a baby's crying that is annoying, but a keening sound that makes you want to pick up a baby and make it feel better. BTW, I cannot comment on your allusion to Radu Marian, as I have never heard this person sing. Any links?
I listened to several clips of Marian as you suggested. Comparing him to a singer like Wunderlich who is one of the top 10 greatest tenors of the last century is comparing apples to oranges to say the least. I'm still uncertain as to why you made that association? To me, Marian sounds like a giggly girl--so NOT my cup of tea! Well, if you like countertenors, I'm sure you'll enjoy Philippe Jaroussky, who, I feel, has a much better vocal quality and technique.
Thank you for posting this marvelous rendition. I am an old Zauberfloete fan and I have heard almost all versions worth listening to. Splendid technique and deep knowledge of style.
If he had lived longer, he would have been one of the few really great Tamino's of this world on stage.
@minnie888444 He would have BECOME one of the great Taminos? He WAS one of the great Taminos. In fact, he may have been the best Tamino ever. Who has been better?
I must admit that I listened to him before I sang ,to try to learn , I always feel better in my voice after hearing him. Great singers make us better. Kári Friðriksson.(karifrid on youtube)
This was the first Tamino I ever heard (when I was about 3 years old) and he is still just the best. It is so great music and done so extraordinary beautiful. Every note is just like a little wonder. Love it.
WOW--one is tempted to call this the definitive vocal performance of this aria. I wish more renditions has this chiaroscuro: wonderful, telling shades of color & dynamics. I disagree that the tempo is too slow--it doesn't seem to lag or lose momentum. Most important, there is total conviction & sincerity, not even the slightest affectation. He's in heaven now, singing Wagner's Siegfried, and St Martha is preparing the intermission repast!
There are so many things about this performance that I enjoy. I do not, however, enjoy how easy he makes it look. Congratulations, Mr. Wunderlich. No one can/will ever surpass this amount of ease singing this aria.
Wunderlich cannot be compared to many. He makes Fischer-Diskau sound like a boy scout on Schubert. This guy Lichti who is mentioned by one or two ignorant commentators has a thin sound compared to Fritz and absolutely no controlled power. Fritz could do Wagner and had zero weaknesses and this is confirmed by those in the business who sang with him.
What a great video to work with, if your voice is free, then you'lkl understand that it is more of a god thing happening than him actually doing something. Beauty!
there might be a copy of Mendelssohns "Fruehlingsglaube" from Fritz available. However, I spend some time to learn why Fritz is performing so good. One of the reasons in my opinion is, he really adopts the story behind. He had a very good corepetitor Hubert Giesen and he teached him singing amazing songs.
the only odd thing that i noticed its the way that he breathes.must be the way that german singers are breathing i dont know.but its definitely diffrend
I'm a German singer and I must say that the way he breathes is not typically german. But my teacher often tells me that Fritz Wunderlich is one of the most perfect singers in the last century.
Actually I tried to adopt his kind of singing and my voice became much more better ...
That doesn't mean that he always did everything the exact same way. In this clip, he is breathing differently from... himself in earlier videos of the same aria. They are taking it very slow, and he's kind of leaning back on the piano. It's rather strange, compared to... himself. It's more breathy and less focused, compared to ... himself.
Perfection. Beautiful line, never oversung, spot on intonation, restraint throughout. He truly has no equal that I've heard in this rep. This is the model for how to sing this aria.

Fantastic tenor!! Hope he delves into some of the Italian repertoire.
samcern 2 years ago
Mr. Wunderlich won't be "delving into [any] Italian repertoire" because he died tragically about 40 years ago in a fall down the stairs. And some of the Italian arias he has recorded were done in his native German.

What a wonderful sound and ease. I was presently surprised to hear an up and coming Tenor, Isaac Hurtado, do great justice to this aria.

This is just great tenor singing at its pinnacle. He keeps those G naturals so slender!!!

Is it possible that such a glorious sound can come from a human being's throat (Wunderlich)? Or that such wonderful melodies can spring from the imagination of a human being (Mozart)?

Possible but SO hard to believe...still pinching myself.

Very beautifully said.
tagliavini 2 years ago
I don't understand this " crying baby in the best way" description. Sorry. Perhaps it's more applicable to Radu Marian's singing. And I also mean it in the best way as it's very beautiful but very unusual. I only fully agree with the second part of your comment. I hear Wunderlich's mature man's singing and it's absolutely awesome! He is one of the very best tenors of all time! Bravo!
serenaluce 2 years ago

The end of this aria (3:17 or so until the end) is not supposed to sound this easy! STUNNINGLY beautiful!!!

Who has been better?

mozart wasn´t the best composer of arias, but the performance of this one is one of my favourites!!

What a profoundly stupid comment. Why don't you tell us whose arias you prefer among Mozart's contemporaries?

IsingOpera 3 years ago 6
Wunderlich cannot be compared to many. He makes Fischer-Diskau sound like a boy scout on Schubert. This guy Lichti who is mentioned by one or two ignorant commentators has a thin sound compared to Fritz and absolutely no controlled power. Fritz could do Wagner and had zero weaknesses and this is confirmed by those in the business who sang with him.

What a great video to work with, if your voice is free, then you'lkl understand that it is more of a god thing happening than him actually doing something. Beauty!

Hi,
there might be a copy of Mendelssohns "Fruehlingsglaube" from Fritz available.

Hi,
I'm a German singer and I must say that the way he breathes is not typically german. But my teacher often tells me that Fritz Wunderlich is one of the most perfect singers in the last century.
Actually I tried to adopt his kind of singing and my voice became much more better ...

"I'm a German singer and I must say that the way he breathes is not typically german."
You don't say!
What is 'typically german' breathing. ;)
forgetititititit 3 years ago
That doesn't mean that he always did everything the exact same way. In this clip, he is breathing differently from... himself in earlier videos of the same aria. They are taking it very slow, and he's kind of leaning back on the piano. It's rather strange, compared to... himself. It's more breathy and less focused, compared to ... himself.
