I guess the blanket demonizing of businesses troubles me. Take Google for example, they own Youtube and they share ad revenue with the users of popular videos. Both the user and Google benefit from this relationship. It is a win-win. Businesses and corporations are not always bad.
If we play by the rules then there should be a dozen monopolistic banks out of business today. There also should be a few hundred Defense Corporations out of business because they are just Welfare Corporations of our Keynesian Government. Ever heard of Tit for Tat Economics? How come you never see Pepsi & Coke on Sale in the same store at once? Look at the Dairy Products section and you will only see One competitor on Sale while the rest are at their normal prices. @ManufacturedThoughts, I agree about the banks. I didn't like banks being absorbed. I had my bank accounts (IRAs, CDs, Checking, etc) go through 4 banks, because of acquisitions. It was disconcerting. As far as issues like Coke and Pepsi, you'll find both products in big supermarkets. The small owner/operator stores (not a chain) will usually have one of the brands. There is limited shelf space, so Coke and Pepsi fight for that space with deals, which is competition at work.

That's not direct competition. That's cooperation between the two and the stores that sell them. At least on the supermarket retail level. However, they do compete trying to get contracts to sell through other retailers like sports arenas, fast food chains, and schools.

Sometimes the manufacturer gives in by lowering the price. Ultimately, competition matters most in what the consumer buys. Nothing went back to the US taxpayer except for future stagflation.

I guess the blanket demonizing of businesses troubles me. Take Google for example, they own Youtube and they share ad revenue with the users of popular videos. Both the user and Google benefit from this relationship. It is a win-win. Businesses and corporations are not always bad.

@ManufacturedThoughts, I agree about the banks. I didn't like banks being absorbed. I had my bank accounts (IRAs, CDs, Checking, etc) go through 4 banks, because of acquisitions. It was disconcerting. As far as issues like Coke and Pepsi, you'll find both products in big supermarkets. The small owner/operator stores (not a chain) will usually have one of the brands. There is limited shelf space, so Coke and Pepsi fight for that space with deals, which is competition at work.

That's not direct competition. That's cooperation between the two and the stores that sell them. At least on the supermarket retail level. However, they do compete trying to get contracts to sell through other retailers like sports arenas, fast food chains, and schools.

@mickeysears, I do know that the owners of the stores sometimes refuse to restock a brand, if they feel the product hasn't moved fast enough. Sometimes the manufacturer gives in by lowering the price. Ultimately, competition matters most in what the consumer buys. People will go out of their way to buy their favorite items as long as it is at a reasonable price.

I would end the US Federal Reserve Bank's monopolistic control over aggregate money supply, reserve requirements, and control over sub-prime interest rates. Money supply (M3) should equal the rate of GDP or be no more than 1% to 2% more than GDP. The taxpayer bailouts just went into all the bad investments big corporate banks fail on. Nothing went back to the US taxpayer except for future stagflation.
