There is nothing wrong with an up to date version of a song... Too bad the singer cannot sing. He was out of tune the whole time.
But to say the band has no musical talent is not fair. Just listen to Duncon Chisholm's solo records and you know that at least some members of the band have great musical talent.. perhaps Wolfestone doesnt always showcase it.
What terrible crap. I have no problem with songs being covered, but these people have about as much musical talent as has my snake. What an insult to a lovely song.
Personally, I like what Old Blind Dogs are doing (have done). I agree with AryanScot. We don't want to "water down" the music to the point that it can't be recognized as Scottish. But I have no issues with "put'n a new twist" on a classic.......This version is rgt on the edge of drifting.....Not that the song in and of itself is bad.....
Well I'm a Silly Wizard man and a Wolfstone man both. I've seen both (though, sadly, it was Silly Wizard's last tour!) and won't hear a bad word about either. FANTASTIC bands. And, if you have it, please post Close it Down by Wolfstone!
Giving Scottish national music the 'Wet Wet Wet' treatment isn't good. Wolfstone do have a fairly unique sound, but they have to be careful they don't go too far in stripping a piece of what actually makes it 'ours' as opposed to the usually americanized made-for-profit crap that we hear on the radio.
I suppose it's all an attempt to make our national music appeal to the youth. They can't be blamed for that....
I think it would be pretty tough to give this song the 'Wet Wet Wet' treatment as you call it; and Wolfstone would probably be the last band on the planet to attempt that. The way I see it is, they've taken an auld Scottish song, cranked it up a notch, gave it a bit of a jazzy feel, and made it appeal to a younger generation. The fact that many of the more negative comments made on here come from people over a certain age proves my point. Can't please everyone! ;-)
@itsablack1 I like it. It's a rockin' version, as I've come to expect from Wolfstone. I see value in both versions, frankly. This is great, but you can have my Silly Wizard when you pry it from my cold, dead iPod.
I think it is unfortunate that on the whole Wolfstone vocals don't really shine through their musical arrangement. Have to admit that Silly Wizards sing this song with better expression. I'm a big Wolfstone fan, sadly I have to order their CDs online cos where I live hardly anyone's heard of them. I'd love to watch them live some day. Still I won't deny they ain't perfect. Thanks for posting though. If not for people like you, I would never have been able to appreciate their music!
Two stars. I consider this the "American Idol" treatment that takes a wonderful song and strips from it 100% of the fire and passion that real musicians discover in the music.
Possibly the age factor is because we old farts can remember when popular music wasn't nearly so limp and lifeless. We expect music to be more robust than somebody reciting the lyrics. This version sounds like the singer is reading a page from the telephone directory.
Touché! Posting from work does bring out extra grumpiness.
Hey, I gave the video two whole stars. This is the about the same flat sound I hear from Celtic Woman - pretty noises that don't mean much of anything. There's a reason why great Celtic bands like Clannad and Altan and Silly Wizard have been popular for decades and continue to add new fans.
its not my favourite version... and Im about 30 :) I woulnt call it chainsaw rape, but nevertheless its overdone. And I think Silly wizards version is just to pure :) I really enjoyed Sons of Maxwell version, its the best rendition Ive seen so far.
everybody has their taste...but I have to agree w/ the 'chainsaw rape' comment, and I'm well under 60. It's two different songs... and I feel Silly Wizard is the best by far...
BTW- I don't like it....the ONLY part I liked was the bagpipe 'solo'... but I'm not knocking your taste- just stating mine, and the fact that I"M WELL UNDER 60!!!!!!!!!!!!! (age really doesn't control taste in music...)
thats ok, you can knock my taste in music if you feel like ;-) Its just a bit of fun ;-)
But age can effect taste in music, i don't remember many old folk being at the last Prodigy gig i was at ;-) but a few at the last Wolfstone one ;-)lol
well i've just listened to Silly Wizard version, and i suppose if your over 60 it would sound just fine;-) I'm not knocking the traditional sound, but the Rapalje
version is also done better than Silly Wizards, oh and come to think of it so is the Fiddler's Green version:-)

sorry, but this is awful.

Bland, boring, uninspired. There's nothing youthful or exciting about this, imo.
I'm in my twenties and think Silly Wizard's version is unquestionably better.

I bet you were brought up with "Silly Wizard",being so young and that ;-)

Well thank you :-)
I know they're not perfect, i've got to watch what i'm saying here, cos the Wolfstone trinity will have me hanged from the nearest tree ;-)lol

There is another thing about "old farts", the older the grumpier ;-)

It's a good Wolfstone version -- has their signature sound and strong rock infusion. But then again, I like Wolfstone.
Sons of Maxwell version is lame, IMHO, very bland. But not as lame as Duplet's version.
Can't beat Andy M. Stewart's voice. Silly Wizard is the epitome. This is my favorite tune of their's.
