I prefer the pre 1980's style. The movement was more graceful... more fluid. I appreciate the power and technical ability of today's gymnasts however, I feel what they are doing is too close to what the men are doing on the high bar. Thanks for the trip down memory lane - excellent video.
Seriously some of the choreography and technique from the 50's is far more fluid and beautiful than all the powers moves we're used to seeing. As the video progresses to more modern times, gone is the artistry and immediately it's all power and intense dismounts.
@summerbaer25 i guess simply just by the evolution of movements.... the harder the movements were the more they reqcuired that the bars move further apart.... that's just what i think
Thanks for this video! How interesting! I love to see the trends of gymnastics over the years... This is a great example of how things just keep chugging along.....
It seems to me that as soon as they moved the bars far enough away that you couldn't do bar beats anymore, the routines lost their flair. If I wanted to see Men's high bar, I'd watch Men's high bar. I love this early stuff. It's so much more beautiful then bars are today.
who is the gymnastics in the 60's with the large yellow-ish hair? i feel like i have seen her before/she is famous, but i cannot for the life of me remember her name!
One big difference were the athletes. In the 50s they were taller and less muscular.
As the sport progressed, the athletes appear to be shorter and had A LOT more muscularity. The video from the 90s had a camera above the bars, allowing use to see the distance between the bars most accurately. Whatever differences, it's an amazing sport.
I personally love the 90's! The only problem I have with today's bar routines is that the low bar is pretty much neglected. I would love to see more gymnasts use the low bar like Amy Chow. Also, I miss seeing those beats around the bars.
:O wow. They make it look so effortless when I know from first hand experience it is NOT! Wow, this was just amazing to watch, I would love it if I could learn just the uneven bars and floor, those are my favorites. I think I like the bars from the 70's the best... or maybe the 80's... 2000's? They all look great in different ways!
great video! as far as beauty and grace goes the 50s-60s wins. 70s was when they started to get more daring and got more and more difficult from there!
can you do something like this for the other apparatus??

The 70s and 80s just seem like Cirque Du Soleil acrobatics. It was definitely less about form and precision then and more about ooo-ing and aw-ing.

I wish we could get the Michelle Sessions' mount (front tuck with a half immediate glide) which was way cool, too.

When the bars were closer together, it looked so cool when the women would randomly bounce off of the bars.

Some of those clips at the beginning look older than the '50s.
It is interesting to see how bars has evolved.

Woa... 70's were the best.
Even if girls on uneven bars jump higher and are more powerful nowadays, the moves were much crazier back in the day.

if it all started with the p-bars, why didn't women just got into p-bars?
and is it also the reason why today's uneven bars are made of wood?
