This sketch blows! I'm a huge Martin and Lewis fan, for over 40 years. This was not their style at all. I get why Dean apparently didn't like it. It's also very apparent that they were no longer getting along at this point in time and there was no more spark between them. This was not funny at all but tremendously heartbreaking to watch. They couldn't even look each other in the eye. Just so sad.
What I can see is that what they each had ideas that would have worked in their separate careers. Dean liked to sing chill and play golf. Jerry wanted to take risks. I think the Martin and Lewis partnership is remembered as fun and love. I think Jerry shouldnt have done the sad stuff with Dean. He shouldve waited and done it on his own because, Ill quote Jerry: “it's hard to do comedy with a guy you aren’t speaking to” imagine trying to do a sad bit with him. Nevertheless it was a cute sketch :)
From all I've read, Jerry wanted to right more stuff for him, and not give enough to Dean towards the end...This makes me not like Dean's character, and sympathize with Jerry's. If I was Dean, I wouldnt have liked the sketch either. He wanted stuff to change as well...wanted to be more than just a straight guy all the time...Of course, this is just from stuff I read, same as a lot of the comments here. I really wish I was alive during this time to be able to enjoy Dean and Jerry firsthand.
Dean asked jerry,"why don't you cut the sad skit out. They want funny.." in the book. Jerry came up with this sketch on his own. He was getting to the point in his career where he wanted to explore more avenues of acting. Dean just wanted to stick to the stuff that sold.
Dean did some serious acting, sad characters, but he was at his best in comedy and I think he felt that he and Jerry were best at comedy and he hated when Jerry tried to be something else, Obviously their disagreement grew til they split-----Jerry had a point, each had to grow, Dean to do what he loved, sing, act and do comedy. Jerry to try pathos with comedy, write and direct.
I don't think that they needed the sad ending. They were only doing sketches, and those sketeches are very short so they really can't put a lot of plot into it. But it's very Jerry-ish with the pantomime and everything.
I agree. the ending was very Jerry-ish and I don't think it was needed. It feels unlike something Martin and Lewis would normally do--kind of like Three Ring Circus.
