Imagine if Barry Sanders played in today's NFL, where defenders aren't allowed to tackle hard or horse collar.
And everyone that claims Barry is the best ever, sorry, but Emmitt Smith. Barry might be the most talented ever, but I'll take Emmitt's consistency, toughness, and durability over a longer period of time. I'd definitely take Barry for one season, Emmitt for a career.
@dayday3209 emmitt had the greatest o-line in nfl history, it took him like 16 seasons to get the all time record, it would have taken barry about 10-11, just because he has the most yards ever doesnt make him the greatest running back of all time
Barry saunders was truly great because he played for the love of the game unlike most nfl players now they play for money and the 2 season lock out proves that
All time rushers 1 Smith 18,355 (14yrs,) 2 Payton 16,726 (12yrs) ,3 Sanders 15,269 (9 yrs,)Sanders just blows everyone off the charts. If he played 14yrs He would have ended up with 24,000 Payton died being the NFL rushing leader because Sanders was such a class act.he did'nt have Jerry Jones building a billon dollar team.Barry played on the shit Lions team, that spent just about beer money for each offensive lineman. To me Barry Sanders is and always will be the NFL leading Rusher.
@burlpen89 Not even that but Emmitt Smith got those yards with an all-star caliber o-line. All 5 of his lineman throughout his career made the pro bowl consistently. That is just ridiculous. Oh and Barry had that many yards in 9 years with a horrible line. All of his runs were all him. The o-line barely contributed, yet we have idiot cowboy fans claiming that Emmitt somehow was better. Lol what a joke. I really hope that this world ends in 2012 if this is humanity.
@dawhiteguy622 Yes a couple years he had a few pro bowlers here and there. Key word, PRO BOWLERS. Not eventual HALL OF FAMERS like some had the luxury of having.
barry's stutter step was just insane! he made so many defenders look sick. im not old enough to have seen jim brown play, but barry is WITHOUT A DOUBT the best running back since brown and walter payton! any doubters need just ask those defenders left grasping air. i guarantee those guys were thinking, "but i had him! he was right there...then he wasnt."
@giveittomeidiot I Hear Ya ... Much Respect For Sanders ... The Man That Walked Away From The Game ... And Never Looked Back ... On Top Of The World !
What about OJ? Get the book "PURSUIT OF EXHIBIT 35 in the OJ Simpson Murder Trial" or view "SERPENTS RISING: An Independent Investigation of the OJ Simpson Murder Trial" both available at amazon dot com. You'll witness Simpson's own CA lawyers, the so called "Dream Team", conspire with the LADA's office and LAPD to conceal evidence that could have proven Simpson's total innocence and eliminated the "trial of the century" altogether, the intentionally suppressed evidence numbered "Exhibit 35".
probably the best thing about barry sanders is he came off one of the best seasons in NCAA history and went to the NFL and didnt miss a step. he made defenders look like idiots. he was a man playing with boys
he was the best running back ever. no one could do what he did. just look at his one season as a starter in college. He could play for any line and get a lot of yards, i.e playing for detroit and looking like (by far) the best runnign back in the league. In college when he actually had holes to run through we saw his true potential
I'm sorry Walter. But Barry Sanders IS the Greatest Running back in the History of the NFL. He set Records playing for the Lions. That is a feat in itself. That is like setting most points scored in NBA history playing for the Clippers. I wish he would have moved from Detroit.. This man Deserves a Superbowl Ring for every game he played. Really a once in a lifetime athlete. If he would have had a full Career. Youre looking at around 20-23,000+ total Rushing yards.
@Palrath1 The sad thing is is that, even as a life long Detroit Lions fan and someone who started watching football as a kid purely because of Barry Sanders, I agree 100%. The man was bigger than any one team.
@dallas5sb actually if you average out the yards of Emmitt its 12,223 or so per year where as Berry averaged 1526. a year so you give barry even 3 of the 5 extra years emmit had and Barry ends with 20,000. so yes on average he is the greatest season to season back and just plain RB in my opinion.
@dallas5sb since when did Smith enter the conversation? If you even compare them... That is an insult. The Greatest Running back of all time has no equal. Barry retired because he didn't want to break Payton's all time rushing yards record. Which was less than a season away... Barry would have broken that in 10 years what it took Smith an entire career to do playing at dallas... Barry would have broken that record in 8 or less seasons if he played at Dallas or SF.
@Palrath1 Right on brotha. He left about 1300 away from the record. Averaging over 1500 a year. It took emmitt into his 11th season to pass barry, then into his 13th season to pass walter. Barry would have done it 2 seasons sooner than emmitt. People say emmitt cause he scored more but thats a result of a great passing game opening the run. Not many people realize but emmitt only had 1 more rec td in his career than barry and emmitt had around 150 more receptions.
@tizeltime08 yea thats maybe cause the lions had one of the worst qbs in the leauge and one of the worst offfenseve lines in the lueage and guess wat berry still better then him
@tizeltime08 bro u r stupid... Emmitt was a good back but not better than Barry... Emmitt played 5 years longer and had a better team around him, Barry was the Lions for the whole time he was there, u stuck up little cowboys brat
@asu5150 most rushing yards, most tds, most total tds, most postseason tds, first player to have 5 or more consectutive seasons with 1400+ yards...numbers dont lie..and if Sanders would have played 5 more yeards he still wouldnt have touch those records...he was a highlight real guy, thats it, but if you can honestly say you would rather but Sanders on your team over Smith,,,you dont know shit about football
@tizeltime08 Emmitt never reached 1800 (Barry had 2) or joined the 2000 club. He never rushed for atleast 1100 yds in every season like barry, in fact only 1 season barry didnt gain 1300+ he got 1100+. Barry ALSO rushed for 1400+ yds in 5 consecutive seasons. When emmitt left dallas, he never reached 1000 again, and with dallas had 2 seasons with less than 1000. Emmitt only had 1 more rec td than barry with over 150 catches more. Barry did more with less; carries, catches, team
@tizeltime08 Emmitt had 1347 more carries than barry and only had 3086 more yards. Thats a paltry 2.29 yds per carry that got him the record. Barry would have had the record in 1 more year. It took Emmitt almost 12 seasons to pass Barry on the list, then into his 13th season to finally pass Walter.
@tizeltime08 so your 1 of those bandwagon fans that like the best player simply because of the fact that they have the most of something like kareem because he scored the most points, but we call mike the best, emmitt played what 16 seasons? and barry played 10, sanders would have had the record in 11, it took emmitt 16 playing for the greatest o-line in nfl history, sanders had no one,
There is some truth to that, but He was on some good Lions teams in the '90s, they made the playoffs a few times (6 seasons), blew out the Cowboys in the 1st round one yr, and won 2 NFC Central titles (12-4 in '91 and 10-6 in '93). It's been awhile since they have been good until recently.
I'm English and have been following nfl for the last year and a half, i know all the basic rules and agree Barry sanders is the greatest of all time, but can anyone tell me why its called the Lombardi trophy?
Barry sanders is a beast. But i HAVE to point this out: look how many quarterbacks he took the ball from in his short 9-year career. Detroit had some serious issues with drafting quarterbacks.
@firelancer69 the average difference isnt like its a whole yard apart so your comment was pointless. as far as im concerned, bret farve is the best. most qb's would love to do what hes done. a QB position is different because its a two man job. you and the receiver. running back its just you. you dont need a good o-line to get yards. you need a receiver to get yards. Ben has great receivers, not saying hes better but i think bret is the best. i dont care what your dumb ass thinks. period
How the fuck can people say Emmit Smith was better than Sanders.
The rule for RBs is: "you're only as good as your O-line"
Smith has the most DOMINANT line of the decade. Larry Allen, Erik Williams, Mark Stepnoski - are you fucking kidding me??? A cow could have rushed for a 1,000 yards with that line.
Barry is the exception to that rule because he could make plays on his own.
I'm not saying Emmit was a bad player, but comparing him to Barry means you're stupid...or you're a Cowboys fan.
@prizmeno7 stop putting the team in the concept and start looking at the runningback himself and what he did. you say emmitt has no moves, but he has 3 superbowl titles that barry will never have. he also has the most rushing td's and yrds in nfl/cowboy history... compare the stats and see who did better. FUCK the excuses stats prove it all. you dont even have to inclute the titles just look at the running back stats and emmitt is on top, period.
@itzpacmanx9 So you're saying that Brett Favre is better than all Qb's just because he has more stats of all of them? You're saying that Trent Dilfer, Doug Williams, Brad Johnson, Ben Roethlisberger, etc. are all better than Dan Marino? Get out of here you joke. Stats don't mean everything. If you want to look at stats only then look at averages. Barry came up with 5 yards a carry. While your boy Emmit came only had 4.2 a carry. And that was with his HoF O-line.
TOP 10 RUNNING BACKS OF ALL TIME: 1 Gayle Sayers 2 Jim Brown 3 Marshall Faulk 4 Barry 5 OJ 6 Tony Dorsett 7 Eric Dickerson 8 Earl Campbell 9 Walter Payton 10 Emmit Smith Running Back Criteria: Speed, power, vision, agiliity, balance, hands, big play at big moment ability, yds after contact, make something out of nothing ability, making others better around them, surrounding talent, and talent in coaching staff
SIKE.............I've watched both Barry & Emmitt in the 90's, and no one has ever RAN with a football like Barry. Emmitt had no moves, he literally would just run straight up the middle or to the outside. Everyone here ain't hating, there just stating the obvious that Emmitt had tremendous support from his all pro O line, all pro Quarterback and all pro recievers. Would Emmitt have become the all time leading rusher as a member of those 90's Lions? Nope. But Barry did ;)

Too many stupid people "forget" Emmitt played with arguably the greatest O-line EVER.
And then there was two Hall-of-Fame players (Irvin & Aikman) who took safeties out of the box.
He played vs. 7 man fronts with a dominant O-line. There's a reason he has the all-time rushing record, he had A LOT of help.
Barry didn't have shit to work with and he was still DOMINANT, not to mention a being a fucking badass.

xFootball2011x 2 months ago 28
Saying hes the best to this day doesn't apply. Adrian Peterson would kill people back in the 80's and 90's. Seriously, kill them.
ataylor992 2 months ago
@ataylor992 Peterson is the shit today, but so would Jim Brown be probably in every era.
Barry Sanders is by far my favorite player ever, the most elusive cat there ever has been, but I'd have to say Jim Brown is the G.O.A.T.

Hey, @1Colorz haha
There is some truth to that, but He was on some good Lions teams in the '90s, they made the playoffs a few times (6 seasons), blew out the Cowboys in the 1st round one yr, and won 2 NFC Central titles (12-4 in '91 and 10-6 in '93). It's been awhile since they have been good until recently.

Man if he had the Cowboys O-line of the 90s.......

They started hating on Barry trying to say he wore bigger shoe and he put silicon on his body but the true matter was he just could not be stopped.

Barry sanders is a beast. But i HAVE to point this out: look how many quarterbacks he took the ball from in his short 9-year career. Detroit had some serious issues with drafting quarterbacks.
Broncosfan2011 3 months ago
@Broncosfan2011 and never had a solid O line
imagine if he had the Cowboys line
he would set the record so high

barry sanders the best the lions don't deserve to have a such a good player like him barry sanders did all the work when he was on the lions
SuperCoconutpie 3 months ago
@firelancer69 the average difference isnt like its a whole yard apart so your comment was pointless. as far as im concerned, bret farve is the best. most qb's would love to do what hes done. a QB position is different because its a two man job. you and the receiver. running back its just you. you dont need a good o-line to get yards. you need a receiver to get yards. Ben has great receivers, not saying hes better but i think bret is the best. i dont care what your dumb ass thinks. period
itzpacmanx9 3 months ago
How the fuck can people say Emmit Smith was better than Sanders.
The rule for RBs is: "you're only as good as your O-line"
Smith has the most DOMINANT line of the decade. Larry Allen, Erik Williams, Mark Stepnoski - are you fucking kidding me??? A cow could have rushed for a 1,000 yards with that line.
Barry is the exception to that rule because he could make plays on his own.
I'm not saying Emmit was a bad player, but comparing him to Barry means you're stupid...or you're a Cowboys fan.
ElCuloChulo 3 months ago
@ElCuloChulo I totally agree, but that Cow reference made me LOL
pats4lifebb 3 months ago
@prizmeno7 stop putting the team in the concept and start looking at the runningback himself and what he did. you say emmitt has no moves, but he has 3 superbowl titles that barry will never have. he also has the most rushing td's and yrds in nfl/cowboy history... compare the stats and see who did better. FUCK the excuses stats prove it all. you dont even have to inclute the titles just look at the running back stats and emmitt is on top, period.
itzpacmanx9 3 months ago
@itzpacmanx9 So you're saying that Brett Favre is better than all Qb's just because he has more stats of all of them? You're saying that Trent Dilfer, Doug Williams, Brad Johnson, Ben Roethlisberger, etc. are all better than Dan Marino? Get out of here you joke. Stats don't mean everything. If you want to look at stats only then look at averages. Barry came up with 5 yards a carry. While your boy Emmit came only had 4.2 a carry. And that was with his HoF O-line.

itzpacmanx9 3 months ago
@itzpacmanx9
Nope. But Barry did ;)
prizmeno7 3 months ago in playlist prizmeno7's favorites
@itzpacmanx9 so if emmitt was on the lions he would still be the best? nope not a chance in hell he wouldnt be in the top 100 if he was on the lions

1. Gayle Sayers Hands Down Best all around talent ever seen:
2. Jim Brown Hands Down: power, speed, agility, vision, and yards after contact his signature
3. Marshall Faulk Hands Down: Set records for leading NFL in all purpose yards. Maybe the closet to Gayle Sayers all around talent.
4. Barry Sanders: Did the most with less blocking
5. OJ Simpson: Set new standards and was a combination of Gayle Sayers & Jim Brown
