  • Interesting technique!

  • Amazing Performance! This guy can obviously sing which helps! One of my favourite pieces of Music. I had the dosh I'd buy one of these amazing instruments!!

  • This actually sounds kinda creepy!

  • I believe it was a AKG C420. It was a while ago, and I have used a few other mics since then.

Hope this helps. Do you use the Roland VP-550?

Thanks for visiting and your interest.

  • Can you tell me what is the headset mic you're using?

  • Great stuff. You inspired me almst 40 yrs ago when I sat in front of you at Girardelli Square and you played the "Leo" - the clear plastic monster you built. Way ahead of your time and always a great performance. Defined one-man band and predictive of the synth setups to come in a few decades. Most of all, though your integrity and artistry is magnetic and sublimely effective. --Sam

  • This is amazing. Best version I've ever heard of this song. I know it's not a real choir, but man I got chills from this. I'd like to hear this performed by an a cappella group like Naturally 7!

  • I don't know the background of this music, but I feel there is somthing religious.

This really moves my heart and soul.

Thank you very much for great experience.

  • Marvelous music and a great human being. Don is the best!

I remember him from the old days in San Francisco, and he's just gotten better.

  • I love anything this man plays........Lawd he is always working some keyboard someplace

  • wow just wow

  • sweet babyjesus! gimmi that fried chicken!

  • That's so funny... Ha, ha, ha! The sound does make you feel as though you are not alone when performing solo. As a choir director, nothing takes the place of a great choir sound, but the VP-550 is a technological vocal wonder. It helps me want to create more expressive music. Thank you for your humor! I too, love the music of Rev James Cleveland.

  • Attention e watchout ...Lazy choir members---You might get replaced.....Ha ha ha

    Technology.....WOW!!!

  • Don Lewis is the best. He has no equal, and besides he is a nice friendly guy. Wunnerful music.

  • Don is the greatest and always has been. I have been digging him since he was in LA over 30 years ago. What a marvelous musical experience. Thanks Don.

  • there is no comparison between real voices and electronic ones.

  • some people just don't get it. It is supposed to fill in until the choir starts and I think it is able to do stuff no choir can do, and besides the improvisational music is amazing from Don.

  • you may have missed the point

  • great song!!!!! keep it real :)

  • Thank you! Happy Holiday Season!! Keep singing!

  • Don Lewis also did the music for another video using the VP-550 called "Hold On for Obama" listed on You Tube. Check it out!

  • you are great!!

  • I want to hear Randy Newman use one of these.

  • what a classic ! not enough words to describe this ..

  • That is the best arrangment ive ever heard for this piece!! who is the arranger?? it is moving watching Don Lewis bring to life this beautiful song! not that it was dull to start with. truly spectacular!! thank you.

  • Hello Scottie Tbone,

Thank you for your comment. This arrangement is by the artist in the video, Don Lewis. So glad you enjoyed it

  • Has anyone noticed this guy looks like Al Green!

  • Don, when I saw this, I said "hot damn, I want one of those!" A friend of mine had the same response, so we went halvzies on one. It is the most fun I've had with a piece of music technology since I got my first sampler (but a LOT easier to use than that). I recorded a piece of mine that hadn't seen the light of day for more than 25 years (Marvel Not, Joseph) and posted it to YouTube. Thank you SO MUCH for your inspiring demo!

  • Superb!!!

  • Don Lewis can make any instrument sing! Good to see you.

    Rodney McBride

  • Has anyone noticed, this guy looks like Al Green!

  • Wow. That's amazing man. I love to see artists/musicians perfect their crafts/gifts. I was actually looking at getting some version Roland's vocal arranger, but do you think it would work well with a very contemporary style (as final backgrounds)?

  • very very cool!

  • Don,

What an amazing performance! Watching you play fills me with great joy.

  • Thank you for your kind words. May you enjoy the season with great music, family and friends!

  • wow !!!!

  • That is truly awesome. Thanks for sharing that one Don! The stuff of legends!

  • amazing!

  • Stephen,

Great to hear from you..happy to be in music and enjoying creating friendships with music, our universal language.

    Keep up the great work!

    Don Lewis

  • GOD Almigthy shall continually blessing you as you worship Him

  • Don,

Greetings. Nice to know you're still out there. It's a long way from a Hammond X77, eh?

    Stephen Guyer, (Denver)

  • Hi Don,

Great video! I'm curious now: did you used to perform down at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco in the late 70's? I'm remembering a massive multi-keyboard set-up, partly in plexiglass. Wazzat you?

  • Bravio,

    That's me! Thanks for connecting!

    Take care,

    Don

  • lol!! can u buy these? thats probably a stupid question BUT I WANT ONE!!!

  • damnn Yall can singg dawq

  • good job

  • Don, Great demo of the capabilities of a cool tool in the hands of an accomplished musician. Most amazing - it's in real time!

  • How does this actually work, technically? I'm curious

  • The VP-550 is digital so it has more efficient sound definition than the earlier analog versions but the process is similar. Everyone who uses this instrument will sound different because of style of singing, articulation, and their individual voice (signal). The microphone is connected to the input of the VP-550. The signal from the mic is then analyzed and used to modulate a carrier determined by the notes that the user plays. Hope this is helpful, Don

  • This is what music should always be.

  • ThankYou for the Demo - Your voice is sweet and rich in personality and light. Finally a demo I can sit though. Excellent Don!

  • Oh my god, that was absolutely pure genious. This is the first clip I'm saving to my favourites. Brilliant!

  • Hello everyone. There is MORE to Don's performance at Roland's USA website. Go and listen to this fine musician once again :O))

  • this is amazing in performance and technological departments.

I think i've watched this 20 times since yesterday. Post more VP 550!!!!

  • Thank you for your kind words and enthusiasm for my musical arrangement and performance of this spiritual song of my ancestors.

  • Don, this demo is WONDERFUL and I can only ask if it is available with a STEREO audio track? It looks like you were performing on the Roland stage at NAMM :O)

Do write and let us know. Again, thank you.

I've played this at our organ shop and all that have heard it so far have been amazed over your arrangement and the new Roland !!

  • Don has The Soul Of Gospel DOWN. Iʻd love to see him direct a choir of real human voices singing live. Meanwhile, this is a great ad for Roland, as well as Donʻs arranging talents.

  • Another beautiful offering from a wonderfully talented musician---Don Lewis

  • Magical, soulful, heartfelt and brilliant!
