Amazing interpretation and musicianship, line and legato. Price and Sutherland are technically amazingly, and both have such muscianship. JS voice is little past prime here, but artistry, and line, and musicianship, consistency and vocal approach and style are AMAZING!!!! BRAVA !
Ya'll can be as critical as you like, but until YOU can do it, you really don't have a leg to stand on, now do you??? She was an amazing voice... She was able to sing a great variety of operas, including even operetta and she carried them all off flawlessly! Brava Dame Joan... You still reign Supreme!
@tebaldicallas Not many singers actually stick theis careers only to the repertory the should only be singing, Sutherland was not an exception however this is a fine job. I admit this is not for her either.
This was 6 years before she retired, the very beginning of the opera, and she kicks it! Great trills and clean, light coloratura, not to mention legato line. Brava!
That is an uninformed opinion. Where do you think Verdi LEARNED his craft? From The Bel Canto movement!!!
The one thing about Sutherland, was that she truly WAS a 'Prima Donna Assoluta'. I've sung with 'em all- Arroyo, Millo, Sills, Ricciarelli, and Dame Joan CONSISTENTLY outshone them all. Now, you may not like her vocal production, or her diction. But to say that Verdi does not partake of a "Bel Canto' Background is abstolutely FOU.

Sorry, this aria is not for her - voice does not sound too beautiful -
Middle voice not too pretty - not to be compared with Callas and Tebaldi.
The voice sound heavy.

@tebaldicallas
Compared? Neither Callas of Tebaldi were singing Leonora at 57.....or anything at all actually. Her voice clearly wasn't warmed up either.

@Hako2004 Sorry a great voice - wrong choice - it is not a Verdian voice - I like Sutherland but it is not for
her. The voice is not beautiful here - really past her prime - no clarity in her sound. Otherwise she is just OK.

Pourquoi transformer le grand VERDI en belcantiste ? On connaît tous vos prouesses vocales. Mauvais goût !

@jsmoir1 You're right about the bel canto roots! (I wonder, did Joan outshine Leontyne? I doubt it--not in this role anyway.)

@operaplanete Verdi is still belcanto.....and even more in the early Operas, and in Trovatore, Rigoletto and Traviatta....less just in Otlello
