I like to think of god as a curious sort. A creator, interested in which way his creation will go. I think the laws and mandates, and all that crap were just thrown down to see what people would do. I like to think I'm close to god, even though I'm not religious in any sense. I believe in a greater power, but am not ruled by it. I make choices for myself. I think, in reality, if god does exist -- that's what it would want out of people. Free choice, if created, was given to us for a reason.

I know you're thinking, "IT'S JUST A BOOK GODDAMN IT!", but seriously it was about 1,500 years of writing in that book and once they found the Bible, they immediately made copies. The original ones probably got really worn out. If God has the power to create the universe, of course he has the power to conserve the Bible. Now, I didn't want to start an argument. @1n354a Of course man made the Bible! Moses was a man and he started the Bible off. He wrote Genesis telling how Earth was created and after he wrote four other books. I mean, he was there! He should know how everything fell into place. Then Joshua wrote a book, Samuel wrote more books, and etc.

@1n354a God created the Garden of Eden, which is where Tigris and Euphrates flows. The origin of man started there. When the Tower of Babel split everyone up, everyone got different languages and senses of cultures and split up. There was nothing going on outside of that part of the world until after the Tower of Babel when everyone went to different lands. Then they did as God commanded and multiplied in those new lands.

It's the White man's interpretation of his message and the squandering of his influence. This reminds me of a video called "Stupid Design" by Neil deGrasse Tyson, which I recommend if you haven't seen it. It's a very fun video, and kind of balances out the usual intelligent design arguments such as "The eye is so fantastic it must be intelligently designed", by pointing out some of the less well designed things, such as the fact we breathe out of the same hole we eat with, causing many people to choke to death.

I like to think of god as a curious sort. A creator, interested in which way his creation will go. I think the laws and mandates, and all that crap were just thrown down to see what people would do. I like to think I'm close to god, even though I'm not religious in any sense. I believe in a greater power, but am not ruled by it. I make choices for myself. I think, in reality, if god does exist -- that's what it would want out of people. Free choice, if created, was given to us for a reason.

@1n354a God created the Garden of Eden, which is where Tigris and Euphrates flows. The origin of man started there. When the Tower of Babel split everyone up, everyone got different languages and senses of cultures and split up. There was nothing going on outside of that part of the world until after the Tower of Babel when everyone went to different lands. Then they did as God commanded and multiplied in those new lands.

Nothing really.
It's the White man's interpretation of his message and the squandering of his influence. I have nothing against religion as long as it's not used to effect policy and law that effects an atheist like me. I have just as much of a right to not believe as you do to believe. But that's where the lines get crossed and that where it loses me. If the message of Jesus is so pure and his love so great, why does it need to be forced onto people?

Swine flu exists... It's not the guys in lab coats who create the panic or even produce the vaccines in large quantity. The guys in lab coats identify the virus, then create a cure or prevention. It's the drug companies and media who scare you into getting the vaccines, and who produce the vaccines in massive quantities. It's about big business, not the scientists. This reminds me of a video called "Stupid Design" by Neil deGrasse Tyson, which I recommend if you haven't seen it. It's a very fun video, and kind of balances out the usual intelligent design arguments such as "The eye is so fantastic it must be intelligently designed", by pointing out some of the less well designed things, such as the fact we breathe out of the same hole we eat with, causing many people to choke to death.

They enjoy openly and freely criticizing people because they believe that criticism is the first step towards improvement. Religion on the other hand is the opposite. And I work out and run 4 miles a day. Just quit smoking so it'll take me a while. Plus I'm 40 and thats not helping. My point is, just because I believe in a God u don't, doesn't really seperate us as rational people all that much. So why all of a sudden are us believers considered bad news ? You bring up arguments in the old testiment , about how God was pro slavery and incest and all of that. Last I knew God is a spirit God. Not a God in a book about him and inspired by him.

I think you may be categorizing me as well, as I have never made those accusations. I don't think a 'believer' is bad news, its more organized religion. You've probably heard it all so I wont go into it, but a theist who shares my love of freedom of speech and expression is a fine person indeed. I am actually only 18 despite what my profile says, I am trying to appreciate why an adult would believe in the bible/god. So far, nobody has given me a satisfactory answer.

Not you, I can tell your more patient then alot of athiests on line. And you probably won't get a Satisfactory answer of why one chooses faith over anything else.
For me, My just believing in God has drastically changed my perspective on life, and my own life. I don't feel the need to have to take on lifes struggles alone. Just praying takes alot of the stress away. I want to be the person, I believe that God would want me to be. Strong, Confident and knowledge. I have a huge heart....

I have a huge heart, and I believe that God made me this way for a reason. I always try to help people. Befriend those who need it. And keep in mind, Iv'e always have been like this,so this isn't me trying to be more like Jesus. And Yes !!!! There are non believers that help people too. But people notice a suttle difference a believer and non believers heart. We as believers feel that God would want us to love our enemys. A non believer would think thats a load of shit.

I think its unfair to assume a nonbeliever does not believe in loving his enemies. I think respect and mercy are important values for a person in society to appreciate. I simply have a different justification that doesn't stem from God. I was raised religious (Jewish) and I found that it limited me more than it helped me. I went to sunday school and didn't buy a thing they told me. Being religious made me unhappy, I am not wired for it, yet many have told me to accept religion despite this.

But your not the majority of online athiests. You are not super sensitive when it comes to religion. You don't believe that it works for you and thats fine. I will not force it down your throat because that would be lame !!! Religion is a personal choice anyway. You can either believe in it or choose not to. And I don'r believe your going to hell for not believing. Thats out of the bible and the bible is an inaccurate description of who God is and his word,

When a person like me rejects religion for being illogical, he turns to science because it makes sense. I am much more happy knowing that life is finite and free of absolute judgment. It means life is precious, and the world is a canvas for me to play with and make my mark. I am fascinated by astronomy and our insignificance in the universe. Also, the notion of eternal life scares the shit out of me. Being a natural organism offers me plenty of outlets to explore interests and knowledge.

Isn't it interesting how I think God has helped me and find most of it convincing. I'm talking ofcoarse of Gods word. I for some reason buy it. And I agree with you that the whole idea is popostrous and illogical. But i just buy it. You don't. So why the difference of opinion. Why do I believe and you don't.? And because of this freedom to explore the chance I am given here on this planet, I think free speech and free expressions are vital for making the most out of our time here and improving the world for our children. This is my beef with religion and why I felt compelled to comment on what you said about criticism. The only way for us to learn and improve is through criticism. It is a two way street, and everyone should be as willing to take it as they are willing to give it.

Love me or face torture for all eternity is exactly the same as putting a gun to someones head and commanding them to obey, actually its far far worse. At least in the gun instance you will just die and thats is it, but in the case of this 'loving god' he wants far more than just death. Torture for all eternity! That is hardly free choice.

Good point about the high-altitude . . . but, what if the Babelonions (Babellites?) had secretly invented oxygen masks or pressurised the tower and that just didn't get recorded in the bible? What if they were actually building the first sky-hook or space elevator? Or maybe they had jet packs? ;)

I recognize that you are wanting to defend your god. The thing is your example actually point out flaws in your god. The most glaring of course being that the he placed the tree next to two people who did not know the difference between right and wrong and then allowed a snake to convince them to break the rule of eating from that tree. He practically facilitated the entire event. Meaning he planned to kick them from the garden which is what required him to sac jesus.

The bible disagrees with you. Genesis chapter 2 verse 9: And out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve were so naive they did not even know they were naked till after they ate the fruit. You don't have to be a god to predict the outcome of that story. That first sin was not only likely it was staged.
