I think I died a thousand times before I beat this game. It's great, although it's really rough. True action-platformer child of NetHack design sensibilities.
@DWTerminator I think it's because despite all the death, you feel like you're getting better at it, learning each time how things interact, what to do and what not to do. It's actually pretty easy, each individual thing, it's just learning how they all combine, learning what the secrets do. After a while, it's sort of like the PLAYER is leveling up instead of the character, and you beat it a few times, figure out new things... I think that's why.
Well I never managed to beat it... but every time I get slightly further than I did before. It certainly feels like an accomplishment every time I see that level number increase. Maybe that's it. The sense of accomplishment grows with each step.

@woross1 Why do that when you could offer them on the evil deity's sacrificial altar, and get rewards?

I honestly have no idea why Spelunky's so fun despite being so brutally difficult... but it's a blast.
And yes, those monkeys are pure evil.
