  • Sad.

  • Yes they did.

  • ahhh dude definitely should have used Brian Eno's "An End of An Era". amazing music

  • Great video remember my parents taking me and my brother there when we where kids, we would leave from humbug marina in gibralter, great memories and a fitting song to go along with this video, good ol bob segar good video

  • Brings back many memories of a long time ago......kinda sad.

  • this is depressin' :(

  • the upside down roller coaster reminds me of the Corkscrew @ cp, my mom told me about this place and im only 12 i wish this place was open bcuz it looked cool anyway i go to Cedar Point!

  • The blacks ruined it......good job Detroit

  • @gopconservative78 Fuck you, you racist POS. The owner ruined the island. Watch the video.

  • @keenedge100 Boblo was nothing but a place where Blacks sold drugs while the white (better and superior) went to Cedar Point

  • @gopconservative78 haha well said sir, well said.

  • I remember the prices there were outrageous enough, but if you showed up with U.S. currency it was treated exactly like Canadian currency; they ignored the exchange rate.

  • Nicely made vid, albeit sad to watch.

  • I remember riding The Bug and a terrific rollercoaster. As I recall, it cost a dime to enter the Island from the boat.

  • Always Always sad to see any amusement park go down. The 2nd oldest trolly park in America, Whalom Park (which should have been made a historical place by both the state and federal govt.), was allowed to close in 2000. Another in Witchata Kansas closed recently that had an original Bill Tracy dark ride (Phantasmagoria). Every amusement park had one; now were lucky if a handful are running...and the outlook is just getting worse. Sad to see them go

  • 2:08 thats my school :D but seriously if they still had boblo shit' burg would be a hell of alot better!!

  • Well done video.

  • Wow @ 2:08 my old school and some of my old classmates.! I lived in A-burg and had season passes to Boblo every year. Even worked there for one season. Made a lot of friends and met a lot of really cool people from all over.

  • So sad.

  • Sorry folks, the park's closed.... The moose out front should have told you......(Vacation w/John Candy)

  • I would be taking this boat every day I don't live in Detroit I love in a southern suburb but we can see Canada easy even cars and people from across the water so anyway if are on east river road you can see the space needle and a couple other buildings

  • Boblo Island was closed down because you could buy tickets to the park from both Canada & the U.S.A. One could buy a ticket in Detroit & ride the boat to the island. Then you could ride another boat to Canada when you left the island. Now, let's say you have a back pack, like so many people did, but instead of your back pack containing snacks & drinks & all that other 'normal' stuff it was filled with drugs. You just crossed the border without ever going through customs.

  • Where's the double corkscrew coaster at? Or being located? Plz answer back

  • @i305guy thats what id like to know also, and even the night mare, and the pirate ship ride i loved that one and well as the log flume

  • Great video. Sad, all kids today do is sit on their butts and play video games

  • the "incident" on the boat caused AAA to sell it since even they wouldnt insure their own property... the rouseu family bought it then...?

  • Comment removed

  • i miss bob lo i know my grandkids would love it.. good think my kids went before it closed

  • WOW, what a video! I remember many thing and happy times from visiting there when I was younger, a true shame that a place of happiness is long gone but as for the memories, they will live forever! I love the song you pick, it kinda brings a tear to the eye. Thanks for sharing! Boblo Island...rest in peace!

  • This is Detroit History!

If all you multi-millionaires would donate 250,000, then Boblo Island could remain a permanent amusement park for all.

Form a corporation of Detroit/Boblo or something!

For crying out loud. Why should Cedar Point grab all the gusto?

Detroit's economy is dying. Rebuild Boblo Island and make it even more grandis.

Hey, Detroit was named after someone french, wasn't it?

    eh?

  • My family went every year in the 70s and early 80s.

  • Awesome video.. I recognized friends in this video.

  • My friends parents took me there once.

  • Thank you for creating and posting this! It was a wonderful place for so many years. I did almost every job there - from working in the cafeteria - to garbage collection - to dispatch (tieing up the ferry boats) to security guard. It was a ball.

  • F**King banker wankers if a business suffers a little there quick to pull out and call in the bailiffs to seize then liquidators literally liquidate the business also known as Asset Strippers will value items for scrap /material value alone and clear the site of any salable equipment/goods then land remains disused/derelict for yrs like Duh were`nt they gonna sell the land No they just want to destroy hope of any recovery and go cup in hand to Govt when they struggle themselve Bast**ds.

  • @Bignadim hey fuck head I live on Boblo you are dumb it was the partner who blew his cash on shit buddie if you ganna bitch to me do it please I live on Boblo I wroked on Boblo from the start to the end

  • @TheTyler0953 No fuck you!, calling me that !!I was bitching the banks who have killed three of our parks in UK, forcing owners to sell up and vacate the land, possesed by the banks ! and still the land is derelicts 10 yrs after and our banks go to the governtment for bailouts and push up our taxes they so not deserve. even if the partner blew his cash on shit the others should have not to been forced to close Boblo Island and yeah due to those bank bailouts I lost $23,000 savings (£15,000)

  • @TheTyler0953 i highly doubt you started working there back in 1898! you need to work on your shitty spelling!

  • @SL8R71 not then dip shit i clearly started in 1898! I did in the 1970s

  • @TheTyler0953 you said you worked there from the begining til the end FUCKTARD!

  • I loved that place. Especially liked the boat rides. Whenever we visited my grandparents in Detorit there was a trip to Bob-Lo. Back in the seventies. Sorry to see it gone. End of an era I suppose.

  • I remember this place. I use to get on the boat on the Wyandotte docks. Such teen fun and some great memories. Wish this was still around.

  • I was there in 1985 I was 15 and was one of my favorite summers I ever had. Good bye Boblo!

  • I would metal detect the area asap, theres sure to be coins and relics

  • Wish it was still here!!!!

  • Great photos of Boblo, its visitors and employees. Brings back many memories.

  • i rembered boblo island back in 1992 i went their with a church i went to

  • Geeze..

  • I Miss this Place SNIFF SNIFF! WTF!

  • Somehow I think the demise of the park was more linked to the demise of Detroit rather than "bad management".

  • I think the roller coaster at 2:30 was sold to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California, and they called it the Hurricane. And in 2011/2012, the Hurricane is going to be torn down for a new ride.

  • Beautiful white folks Then came the the others and the corruption and now this.Go ahead and say it's racist but it's true look at Detroit and all other major city's where the white flight gas taken place, Left to the minority's controlled by the libs

  • @kernielsen i couldn't agree more with you..negroes are the down fall of cosiety once the whites move on the place goes to shit..thats not racist..thats reality...the libs can cry all they want...

  • @loungelizard5000 hey slick blow it out your ass..i spelled that right didn't i ,fuckin jerk..

  • lets tell the whole truth the black gangs run off all of the paying customers.@ the last summer the were throwing people off the bobl0 boats at the end you know who to blame no where is detroit is safe ( iknow the island was in canada) thanks!! a lot

  • @thepoopsoup That's complete bullshit.

  • Two theme parks went in England one was Manchester Zoo & Ausement Park that went in med 80`s and American Adventure theme Park went in early 2000 so sad they were Good parks. Blackpool Pleasure Beach barely holding on after major fire in mid 90`s

  • i blame the blacks

  • Thanks for the video. I loved the annual trips my family and I took to Boblo. Dancing on the boat, the rides, people watching, such good times!

  • Wow, This is sad, I grew up in Michigan but left 40 years ago. I found this video because my kids thought I was making up Boblo island. I will always remember all the fun we had there on our class trips in the 1960's. Sorry to hear another part of my Michigan memories are no more.

  • My last time there was late 1987.

  • Doesnt America like places like Boblo anymore? Or is it just to hard to pay for a family of four or five to go,get in,perhpas have lunch, and so on,with the wages they earn working at Walmart and Target, instead of Ford or General Motors?

  • Nice job on the video Matt. The Seger song is a great touch. Many memories, some familiar faces. We all miss Boblo that's for sure.

  • GREAT vid, thank you for posting this. I was about 6 or 7 when my dad used to take me to this place. Honestly, I got all teary-eyed during this video, so many memories and photos were taken there.. its so unfortunate that I'll never be able to show my family a wonderful place like this so close to home.

  • thanks for the upload!

  • Thank you for Posting this video . Sad to see it go , just like old tigers ballpark.

  • You can thank the mayor of Detroit, Coleman A. Young and his regeme. They allowed for the trashing of the city, crime, corruption. The crime spread to the island and who the hell wanted to take their family to the jungle atmosphere that was allowed to happen. This situation still exists as Detorit falls further into jungle rule.

  • @naplesjake wow, that was really insightful. Actually the city was better off during the Colman years than it has been over the past 10 years. I live in the city and worked for the city so I think I have an idea about all of that. It was the mismanagement on the part of the owners of boblo that caused it's demise, cause trust me, people would still go if there was a way to go. If there's no boats how would they come to the island? Anyway Kwame did worse by far.

  • Amazing. I went twice in the mid-80s. Its all abandoned now.

  • More sadness for what was once one of the greatest cities in the country.

  • They should call it niggerlow island now!!

  • @FullyArmedCitizen I must agree with you, if they had kept the black nigger gangs and the swine Outlaw bikers away we may have still had Bob-Lo today. I used to love going as a kid and as a teenager. The last time I visited was in 1981 right after my high school graduation. It was sort of bittersweet, I was 17 years old and went for a day. My mom went with me like old times when I was a kid.

  • When you look at these folks, some are dead now, some are parents or grandparents.

Main article: Boblo Island Amusement Park

Bois Blanc is known regionally as the former home of the Boblo Island Amusement Park, which began operation in 1898 and closed on September 30, 1993. The Nightmare, Falling Star, Wild Mouse (ride), Sky Streak and Screamer were the signature rides.

For more than 85 years, the park was serviced by the SS Ste. Clair and the SS Columbia.

  • @coldbluerain

some of them made it to a theme park in Huston and in Mexico! and one in Ocean City Maryland. They are still living on! a few of them anyway

  • Another victim of Detroit's Socialist Liberal policies that bankrupted the city. What a wasteland.

  • @wlc1980 That and the longtime reign of one of the most corrupt Mayors of all time COLMAN YOUNG.

  • @455Transam You ain't kidding! I had a black and gold 1976 400 Trans Am

  • @wlc1980 Me too. I bought it off a guy here in Southern California in 1999. The 76 was Pontiacs "50th Anniversary" model. Made only one year. Mine was a mock up though original Silver Transam, redone as a 50th Anniversary.

    I've had a few TA's and Formulas.

  • DANG... I'm gonna cry!

  • I miss Bob-Lo! Twistybitz you did a very nice job on this video. In case anyone is wondering, this island is located in Canada and is called Bois Blanc Island and you can Google Map it & see what it looks like now. R.I.P. Bob-Lo.

  • R.I.P. Boble Isaland, you were a big part of my childhood. You will be missed.

  • im64years and this almost tears in my eyes. such sweet memories. my family and another family the Toths used to go to bob_lo almost every summer.

  • The old parking structure for boblo is on a street called clark near a wayne county building, which serves as an outpost for wayne county sherrif it still says boblo.its off of clark and fort street

  • What great memories....we used to drive in from Kalamazoo every year!

  • when will the bob-lo be completed on restore the old boat?

  • Wow,I miss Boblo

  • Good work

  • I'm 52 and spent alot of my childhood days on the boat and the island, very sad what has become of it and the entiere Detroit area. I used to ride the bus from Seven Mile and Evergreen to Winsor Ont. on the weekend to visit with my Grandmother and Grandfater when I was 12 years old, couldn't do that anymore. Great Job with your video and Thanks for the memories, Ken M.

  • Nice work! Appropriate song and artist too. Never went to Boblo but remember seeing the ads on cable back in the 80's. I always hate to see anything historic end.

  • Great video. I've never been to the park, but watching this video brough up some fond memories of a park in Central Florida that closed in the mid 90's called Boardwalk and Baseball. Most people remember it as Circus World. That park was home to the Florida Hurricane, my first major roller coaster. Thankfully it now thrills riders at Magic Springs and Crystal Falls park as the Arkansas Twister. Does anyone know where Boblo's coasters went to?

  • Boblo's coaster went to Playland park. I wish I could've gone there. I wish a lot of the amusement parks wouldn't of closed. Some many of good rollercoaster rotting in abandoned places!='(

  • Thanks for the memories!!!!!

  • is there anything left there? did the property sell?

  • Look at Google earth and you know the answer.

  • They built homes on the island

  • I vaguely remember when the Boblo boat would stop by Bishop Park in Wyandotte to pick people up.

  • I grew up in the Detroit burbs and the biggest thrill in 6th grade was the trip to BOBLO.

  • I remember when I was a little kid Boblo rocked, it was no Cedar Point but still really fun. I miss that that place...

  • This place looks like it was kinda boring. I was only 6 months when this place closed, but it doesn't look like it was very fun to visit.

  • Very good video sad but brings back so many memorys of the island and the boat. The Island may be gone but at least we still have both the Columbia (which is going to New York, Ste Claire which is staying here. There not in the best shape but are being restored so one day the Ste Claire will be back on the river.

  • What is there now?Speaking of Detroit,I still love the reruns of Detroit Animal Cops on Animal Planet.I found out thru the shelter that A P stopped filming 4 years ago.:(

  • you can live on the island now, i heard it also has a really big golf course etc.

  • Glad to hear that. Some old closed parks on YT still sit empty.

  • We used to go every year with school back in the 70's One year my friend Buzz Popyk jumped off the train to retrieve a cane he spied causing the conductor to slam on the brakes and and stop the train. He just ran away down the tracks.

  • Was there the last year it was open.. I so miss this place we suck have nothing good anymore here in Detroit...They waste the money on these casinos to waste away your money.. This was a great park and enjoyed the boat ride music and fun...

  • I believe the 67 riots were the beginning of the end for the city.

  • Thanks, I can't believe it's been that long since it closed. 91 or 92 was last time I went and it was great for those who couldn't make it to Cedar Point. Miss it.

  • my family was part of detroit for a very long time, and im talking long time to. its sad very sad to see the city and everything slowly die.i do visit detroit every now and then.miss it yes. live thier no.i have so much detroit memorobila. old letters and pics of detroit.if i had a wish..from what i can come to understand that wish would no be wasted on a place that let whats happen happen . preserve what for whom. i wonder.saw it comming. but no one listened

  • Well done, I watched it 2 times. Never went there, but you took me back in time. Thanks again Bryan

  • Wow - lot of memories! Thanks for posting!

  • this video made me cry.

    RIP Boblo :(

  • I was there but I was very young, I still remember some small things...like the Octopus and Pirate Ship ride, at that age for some reason it stood out for me.

  • carmine440, you are right. A young, wealthy family man bought the island and was going to restore it, and then was killed in a freak crash.

  • rewarevintage. You are mistaken. Mike Moodenbaugh did NOT die in the accident. He woulkd have lost the park anyway as the financiers did not want to extend anymore funds. Last I heard Mike baught a small Family Entertainment Facility in Oregon

  • damn shame, i would love to have have the chance to take my daughter there, but since detroit and anything it touches dies i never will have that chance..

  • I have went to boblo in 1992 it was a fun place to attend to and i went to the state fair when i was six. when i found out wel losing the michigan state fair was was a little upset about it that was one of our gems to the city espaically being on 8 mile and woodward

  • My grandparents met at Boblo - at a dance during the depression. Who knows if I'd even be around if it wasn't for Boblo.

  • At its peak in the 70's, Boblo attracted more than 500,000 people from Ontario, Michigan and Ohio where a Boblo ferry made daily trips from Toledo.

  • you are crazy ,mystery solved. But your first 5 words were way less crazy.

  • Wow, very nicely done video... And I don't say that lightly because so many on youtube are rotten.

However, isn't there a piece of the story missing? Didn't some young millionaire buy the park from AAA with the intent of re-opening it, but then suffered brain damage in a motorcycle crash, so the park was sold to pay debts?

    Or am I crazy?

  • You re not crazy, just mis informed. The last owner was in an accident. He did survive but the mortgage holder forclosed. The park was already deeply in debt due to poor management and irresponsible decision making during the summer of 1993. As for the guy in the accident, he now owns a small entertainment facility in Oregon

  • I was just at Boblo Island last weekend for the Jazz Festival. Those of you with good memories (and bad) should go and check out the island now - it is beautiful! There is a restaurant near the marina that is open on weekends and it only costs $5 to take the ferry from Amherstberg.

  • it gots homes over there now

  • A lot of good memories at Boblo :)

  • Too sad!

  • :o( thats soo sad that place was awsome n thne the politcal stuff happens n ppl cant get paid n u see what happens that just soo sad that happens :o(

  • Good Job,from a life long Downriver rat!

  • Aah, Boblo..and the bittersweet memories.... There's my friend Caroline, who made the popular or unfortunate decision, depending on your perspective, of wearing a skirt on the spinner....There's my friend Judy, seen briefly in this video, who earned her fifteen minutes of fame portraying Bart Simpson at the park... There's my friend Jacqueline, my tutoring pupil of two years, who died tragically on her way to her first day of work there...For memories good and bad, Boblo will always be special..

  • It went down due to bad management..which seems to be a recurring theme in our national issue. We need prison terms for these business men along with their politicians in crime!

  • I hate what happened to it! I always hoped I would take my children there. It was such a nice and fun place and my uncle was a captain on one of the boats that brought us all to and from.

  • didnt the corkscrew go to cedar point?

  • I know its not there.

  • No the corkscrew or as it was called at Boblo "Screamer" was relocated to a park in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada called Playland. Cedar Point's corkscrew has been there since 1976.

  • it's a real shame that my kids will never be able to have the fun that i did at this place, great memories though that i'll never forget.

    whats happening to the world..?

everything is falling apart now days it seems : [

  • it happens to every generation.

everything we loved fails, but it makes way for the new generation to find new things to love.

  • just like you'll be in 20 yrs. Also our generation made those cool rides for you babies!

  • Hey I wasn't talking to you.

Plus you're not even from generation X. You were probably born in 1968 which makes you a baby boomer. That means you're REALLY a dinosaur.

When you were born roller coasters were made from WOOD.

Your time came and went a loooong time ago.

  • Imagine what rides boblo would have these days. They would have replaced the older roller coasters with the new thrill rides to compete with cedar point. Plus it was in our town. That was the only thing this sad town had left. Do you know how much Boblo's revunes helped our local businesses? Teenagers that worked there spent money in town. So before you bash how "old it was", think about all the negative affects it caused to the town.

  • That fine and all and yes it's too bad that Detroit and the surrounding cities are ruined.

But I live in California. We moved away from Detroit years ago, thankfully.

  • You're an idiot. You're generation owns the worst music production in the history of music.

What you don't understand is that your generation is becoming slaves to a corporation and ban rule. My god..you don't know SHIT!!! and I really feel sorry for your generation. At least I will check off this planet before they globalize it under on Nazi regime! Enjoy your last days...they won't be as pleasant when you realize what we had!

  • Well, at least some of the rides were saved. Sky Streak is now in Mexico, and Screamer reopened in 1994 as Corkscrew at PNE Playland in Vancouver.

  • Great and sad post ! I'll always remember Boblo

  • thanks matt great job

  • You could punch me, but then you'd end up like this failed place - extinct.

  • Your parents were idiots to go along with it.

  • i used to work there in the games department from 88 -91

  • I Grew up went Boblo Island every year it was fun from Detroit rode on Boblo boat to island stay there till night and come back on boat they have Dance on 2nd floor short then on top boat and see moon I wish that keep going ... My kids didnt know about that Boblo Island, was closed that makes me sad....and i did visited though Canada island had rid rides and cement gone and trains tracks gone north of island got new homes south island were blocked bec its belongs to USA (where ride was)

  • Great Video, I remember going to Boblo Island a lot as a young boy. I really miss that place. You could have picked a better Bob Seger ballad for this video. Great Job Again. BOBLO WE MISS YOU!!

  • I really miss this place!

  • Comment removed

  • wow! what a great clip was really moving reminds me on the 1980's.

loved the bob seger ballad too.

brought a tear to my eye.

I havd a paper route in Gibraltar mi when I was 14 years old I got a season pass for $25 dollars.

I went about 35 times in 1985,, good time when you live in a small town, you could hop a boat and heck of a great time.

  • We can all lament the passing of a great institution that gave many us of great memories of the fun we had. But, to blame it on "poor managment" is only partly true. "Sagging attendance" was the reason. Inside, we all know why. We know why Plum ST. failed. We all know why we left Detroit and won't go into it again.

  • how do you get there to visit? i want to go back and see everything

  • nice video piece

  • i remember i went twice in my life..im turning 28 in two days..and well the only bad memory was when water was spilled from the upper deck on me and it was fucking cold...but still good times...good times...was wondering can you still get to the island on a boat..

  • Yep, when the bar and grill opens in the spring, you can take your car over for 6 bucks, round trip. Drive around to your hearts content. It's visually stunning to see how nature reclaimed it in such a short time.
