Well, in my experience three things matter the most. Firstly, make sure to dl from a private tracker - the people there have insane connection speeds and everyone of these people tries to seed as much as possible. that brings me to the second thing - youu should concentrate on torrents with as much seeders and as little leechers as possible (altohugh that doesnt have to apply to private trackers, bc of the high speeds). Finaly, DO NOT limit your upload speed, trust me, it does make a difference.
Azureus is probably the best for Mac. However, it all depends on the number of seeders that your downloading the torrent from. thepiratebay is really good, but also very risky. However, I use Azureus and I have downloaded stuff 200-600 kbs. It all depends on the number of seeders.
your problem its beacause you took a torrent with low Seeds so no ppl was transfering data.

Wire or wireless connection ? If it is a wire check your cable.
Do you know about opening ports on your adsl modem ? Each computer has a different IP and require new settings on the modem to work properly.

wire.. and yes i have a router.. and the ports are open.. i mean when i test the port from azureus or transmision.. they are open....
