I loved John Denver's music. This was my favorite song of his. My wife and I danced to Annie's Song at our wedding. I get very emotional when I hear him sing. He touches my heart with all his music. Thank you for sharing your short life with us John. God bless you.
I was a child when I heard John Denver for the first time and he conquered my heart immediately. That was long time ago in Brazil, when I could not say a word in English yet. however, I understood him completely. He had that talent of conquering us with his voice, his smile and his beautiful eyes. He was a gifted mam. I just can't understand why people come here to say they don't like him. Maybe because they don't like sincerity. Jonh Denver had a soul as clear as chrystal.
@bananniann me too, my friend. everytime I see him on the screen, I cry many tears... Everyone that likes John Denver so much like us always cry for him. I guess it's because he was like part of our family when he was on Earth. Losing him was like losing a brother, a father. I feel as If I had lost one of my best friends, you know, this is what I feel. He was not a star, he was the Moon!
After John's death Annie was asked by Bryant Gumble if "Annie's Song" was her favorite of all John's music; and she said no, that it was "Perhaps Love" the version w/ Placido Domingo, that speaks volumes for this song.
some emptiness in the world are very paining and intolerable. they are loss forever. nothing can compensate it. these are those sweet treasures we are left with in this world which help us live with reason. hats off to the duo ...
heute zufällig wieder gehört - einfach wundervoll, - es gibt Lieder, die vergißt man nicht ... - egal wo man Zuhause ist. Tusen takk, thank you, dankeschön ...
For me, who loves this song. Domingo's Operatic voice just doesn't fit. I love Denver's solo interpretation and when he sings it with a female in duet, but Domingo just seems to be shouting the words and I think ruins the gentle quiet, please nature of the song. Nothing against Placido. He's great at opera. I just don't like him doing this song. My opinion. That's all.
John Denver and Placido Domingo did this concert May 13, 1984. I have a list of every concert that John Denver ever did in his lifetime - this was number 989 of 1,803 concerts that he performed during his 32 year career - from 08/02/65 (Duluth, Minnesota, Denfeld Auditorium w/Mitchell Trio) to 10/05/97 (Corpus Christi, Texas, Selena Auditorium)
OMG, what does or what can one say. Is this beautiful or what. But as much as I love this song with these two GREAT singers, it is a 'love - hate relationship for me. I truly love this so much but it brings back what I have lost. If only I knew what I had at the time, if only I was mature enuf to realize how wonderful a lady she was and is, perhaps love would have seen us thru.
WOW...John Denver and Placido Domingo...who'd a thunk! What a fabulous blend of two very different genres of vocal talent. Perhaps Love and Annie's Song are my two very favorite John Denver songs.
The Met's centennial was in 1984... 26 yrs ago, so I am guessing that is when it was. Makes sense to me since it was song at my wedding in 1983. Little did I know that I would meet John Denver 6 yrs later when on a night in May his daughter was born at Aspen Valley Hospital. He was such a proud papa... and she a pretty lil babe! I was blessed to have that opportunity!
What a lovely song he basically had to his Mom - I'm sure my heart as well as many others goes out to the family - may they bring you peace and their light shine upon you until you are all together again. God Bless!
John's Mom died on Sunday. Rest in Piece,Erma, and say hi to John for us.
Lovely article on the Denver Post website called 'Remembering John Denver's Mother' by John Moore. His family sound like lovely people. RIP Erma & John.
I don´t enjoy very much duets between opera and pop singers, but this one works very well. The melody is beautifull and John Denver´s clear voice adds a nice contrast to Domigo´s glorius vocals. In fact I think Jonh Dever had a very good voice for a pop singer, very bright and with a strong sense of melody on it. Thanks for posting
@Ivanbelastegui I wouldn't call John Denver a pop singer, country or folk works better. When I think of pop i think of the garbage that gets played on the radio 12 times a day
@CorganIsBeast He preferred being called a Western singer. Not Country - not pop - but Western. Record companies/stores had no idea where to put him - so they created an entire catagory - just for him: Easy Listening!!!! And it now includes about half of the recording artists - including the Eagles!!!!!!
The more I listen to music, the more I keep returning to John Denver's songs. He wrote some wonderful, uplifting songs about all the good things in life, with a purity & understanding. Thank you to everyone who has posted his songs on youtube.
First time I ever heard this song I had to pull my car over to the side of the road. No song has ever struck me as beautifully written and performed as this.
Very nice tribute to mothers everywhere. John's ability to write meaningful lyrics can never be taken for granted nor his ability to sing them so well. Thanks for posting.
John Denver was the greatest folk singer ever! And I find Domingo is far more enjoyable in popular music than in opera. He actually does quite well here. Good job.
At a concert in Los Angeles, John told a story about how he would practice with his guitar in the evenings on the beaches of Long Beac, and he would long to have an audience to play for....and he certainly got his wish! Incredible, fantastic talent! John, we miss you terribly!
It doesn't come any better than this. Two beautiful voices and two handsome men. I've always loved listening to both of these men, and how delightful to see them singing it together. Thank you for posting this lovely video.
What a beautiful song. John Denver was truly a gifted composer of love songs. This will bring tears to my eyes. Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have heard Pavarotti singing this!
With due respect: Maybe it would've been nice, but to what purpose if this is just perfect! Maybe nice, but never better. John knew exactly his best choice for this song. And not that Luciano didn't like to duet with other popular singers.
Oh! No doubt that could be any mother 's most precious dream. But that's the magic of JD's gift; that any one of us can make it his own, and offer it to a loved one! isn't it? BTW, I wouldn't have "Nessun Dorma" or "O Sole Mio" by anyone else than Luciano. God bless his soul.
JD had recorded the song for RCA,& they REJECTED the album! They took his producer,Milt Okun away from him,& made him do a country album with Larry Butler. Milt, who was producing Placido's first pop album, asked JD if he could give the song to Placi. Then Milt had the idea of the duet! So I think Milt deserves to get more recognition for saving the rejected song & bringing this divine song to the world.
Hey BW! (intriguing nick ;) Thanks for that awsome piece of info! One would say that it's a very small world, or what are the odds? right?, but it seems that great things always come to be in the strangest of ways, don't they? "perhaps love...perhaps destiny?". Thank God and thank Milt we have this masterpiece for the whole world to rediscover love at its best! And thanks to blsimms for sharing.
How wonderful! I´ve loved this song from the first moment I´ve heard it. John Denver was such a great composer - R.I.P.
I had "Perhaps Love" sung at my wedding by 2 members of the Viennese state opera: Peter Paul Hassler and Tobias Cambensy who did it so beautifully... every time I hear John Denver and Placido Domingo perform this song I have to think of my own wedding!
Thank you for this breath-taking song, John, wherever you may be now. We have not forgotten you.
If you listen to this song with just your heart...you will understand that this song is about love of every kind....the most pure love on this planet....the most pure love period. God bless John and his lyrics
He was such a simple man, yet such a great and BIG man in every way possible.
The world lost something very special the day he left us. Think of all the songs he never got to write...But Im thankful for all the songs we have =o) He was a blessing to this world! I think a lot of people never saw this before he was gone. What a true blessing he really was. How great he was.
It may be funny - a tenor and a song writer singing together... but: both have been friends and they both love/loved this kind of music ... how wonderful.
I have listened this song for many times but I have never watched a live performance of Placido Domingo and John Denver together before. Watching them singing this song together with beautiful orchestra music in the background brought me tears. Very beautiful. Thank you for posting this clip.
The contrast in accents and vocal styles is nice and showed potential, but unfortunately Domingo's voice lacked proper regulation as if he was running short of breath. At the beginning for example, he delivered a string of words at a galloping pace as if he was in hurry to get that part of the song over with. Denver was in my opinion the superior performer by far.
Yes this is magic. Great vid but who cares about sonicstep's opinion... there are always those "experts" who can't leave a page without critiqueing everything to death.
This is absolutely beautiful. I'll be directing friends to this site.
I totally agree with you, SonicStep: JD was, by far, much better than Domingo. Additionally, I think that Domingo should thank JD about his fame in the US, because before this song, he was almost unknown. The "King" was at that time -and I think still is- Pavarotti.
What a relief that Placido didn't depend on your expert aproval! Fortunately many foremost authorities proclaimed him the best of modern tenors. This may be disputed by others, but his greatness could never be diminished.
As great as John Denver was your comment is totally disrespectful to Mr. Domingo who was/is an opera singer. Also, the comment is totally inaccurate, I don't know what video were you watching but you are absolutely out of bounds. Total distortion of reality.
This is my favourite song. I had if played at my husband's funeral. The blending of these two voices is perfect and Placido is my all time favourite singer. I have seen other versions but this is the best. Many thanks.
Oh, so sorry you lost your husband, inclusio, but what a wonderful song choice. My 2 favorite singers, (and now I've added Josh Groban), I've loved that song for decades, but haven't seen that video before. an awesome performance!
Awesome

I have listened this song for many times but I have never watched a live performance of Placido Domingo and John Denver together before. Watching them singing this song together with beautiful orchestra music in the background brought me tears. Very beautiful. Thank you for posting this clip.

beautiful, written out of such pain with the loss of his dad at the time, so deeply profound, i love this song, it describes love to a T
poetrymaster 3 years ago
I agree. Occasioally there comes along a song that is just "right." Many of JD's fit that description perfectly.
blsimms 3 years ago
The contrast in accents and vocal styles is nice and showed potential, but unfortunately Domingo's voice lacked proper regulation as if he was running short of breath. At the beginning for example, he delivered a string of words at a galloping pace as if he was in hurry to get that part of the song over with. Denver was in my opinion the superior performer by far.

Interesting and astute observations!

Yes this is magic. Great vid but who cares about sonicstep's opinion... there are always those "experts" who can't leave a page without critiqueing everything to death.
This is absolutely beautiful. I'll be directing friends to this site.

Glad you liked it.

@sonicstep
As great as John Denver was your comment is totally disrespectful to Mr. Domingo who was/is an opera singer. Also, the comment is totally inaccurate, I don't know what video were you watching but you are absolutely out of bounds. Total distortion of reality.
