  • Nothing of the sort nowadays...What numbers

  • Hello Tommy Trout...

  • My dad was in this band!! We got his pipes fixed 2 years ago for him. His pipes are over 50 yearold!! He is still playing them!

  • Aye , Tonyu49 may well be right but hes missed the fact that most of us are half cut in this picture. Touring the Highlands playing gig after gig has that effect on a band .......or have you never toured ?

  • @bundadrew

Cheap shot there mate. The day AFTER we won the Worlds in '84 we won Grade Two at Perth and got 2nd in Grade one. Half the band hadn't been to bed but we were professional enough to be up to the mark when required. ALL army bands get half cut for as long as they have enough money to do so. As before, it was a perfectly legitimate comment i made about a VERY TALENTED band but you only picked out what you wanted from it. Be honest and hold your hands up.

    All the best, Tony

  • Some interesting comments here guys. I played as a guest (drummer) with 1SG in '84 when they won the Worlds. I also played in Grades 1 & 2 with several bands so i'm not 'fannying' anyone. The drumming on this (even allowing for the quality of the tape and the time lapse) is painful. I'm seriously not trying to be disrespectful to a good band with some great players but come on lads, wake up. Tony U'

  • I was serving In A Coy The 1st Bn QOHLDRS in IN at the time and I thought they were all Grade 1. Best regimental pipe band in the land.

  • amazing *_*

  • Top band in the mid 80s. I don't think so. The RSDGs were a good Grade 1 band then and 1SG won the World's Grade 2 in '84 and were upgraded to grade 1. Did I spot a young Alasdair Ghillies here?

  • Won the grade 2 in 85 and won again in dundee the next day. Doing a 2 year tour of N.I. so couldn,t commit to grade 1. Gillies was in the band then. Considering we were split up and attached to other units in Ireland the band would have kicked the butt of any pipe band had they been given the time to practice properly.

  • RAF Wadington as pipey, seen him at Ashbourne games a couple of times, not a bad wee band actualy

  • Did I spot a young Finlay McGee in this clip ?

  • A shame the quality of the video leaves a bit to be desired but you can still tell they were a great band - the Queen's Own is still in my mind one of the best pipe bands the British Army ever had especially during the 80s, alongside the RSDG and 1st Bn Scots Guards when Jimmy Banks was Pipe Major. Bruce Hitchings was still a Corporal then must be around the early 80s??

  • Attached to this regiment in the late 80's. Have nothing but fond memories. They hated us (English) but looked after us also!! Only QOH Could hate us. Anyone else, was looking for a fight.

    CUIDICHN RIGH!

    George: LAD REME

  • Correct abbreviation is Q O HLDRS (QOH is the Queens Own Hussars!!!)

  • You never knocked about with the Pipes and Drums much then ? We didnt give a monkeys where you came from as long as you bought a drink. We had English blokes in the band and even played to the beat from an English bass drummer called John Weeks from Maidstone.

  • We lived next to the pipers block. They used to pracitice outside every night after tea.

I have some photos somewhere of a couple of the lads from that block. I'll have to dig em out.

What years were you there? I was with support coy in Munster from 88 to the end of the 1990.

    Lot of good times.

  • I left in October 1986 but most of the boys I was in with would still have been there.

  • Who was drumy and pipey then when this clip was taken?

  • Pipe Major Ally Reece ( or roaster reece )

    Drum Major Jim Finnie

  • Caber Feidh gu bragh!!!!

  • The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders amalgamated with the Seaforth Highlanders in 1961 at Redford Barracks, the bands you see in this clip that is that of the Queens Own Highlanders (Seaforth & Camerons) Check the pipe banners and the cap badges. This now The Highlanders, 4th Bn Royal Regiment of Scotland. They still have the Pipe Band who still wear the Cameron of Erracht tartan but sadly no military band now.
