I absolutely love this soundtrack but cannot find a recording that is as good quality as this one. Makes me super sad, but at least this video is here!
I really interested to learn if it is just my memories to different time which makes this so touching and magnificient; or if some games of the old days had something different, something lost, like they had a soul of some kind.
For countless years I have not seen a single game which was actually "touching" me; until someone showed me a demo of "Bastion" this summer.
@toufex actually, i was considering to get me a PS2 just to play SotC, this game is a masterpiece indeed. I think I have read somewhere recently, that this game had even been announced some form of "art".
I play this game when I was six. Impossible, incredibly challenging and mindblowing. But it was the music and the visuals that kept me coming back to get my ass kicked. Soon as I heard the flute, I was instantly transported back in time.
@HelloFade2 Not always...the port of Golden Axe was pretty good (though yes in this case; dropping the cd quality audio ruined ALL of the ports), much better FM synth could have been done on the genesis, but they didn't spend the time to redo the music for the ports :/ [The sonic games have some of the best FM synth, not to say they are the only ones; just they are popular].
I was feeling flush so bought the collectors edition in the massive box complete with T-shirt etc. but as much as I liked the presentation it was wasted on such a mediocre game. The music complete with 'Water Margin' bits is still fantastic though.
Hearing this brings up a well of emotion. Magical time, magical computer, magical game maybe not much in gameplay but just that something deep inside that can't be explained.
I will run through the days of my youth and remembering such things when i am very old and i die. I have done a lot inbetween, but along with my ex fiance, my travels around the world, this will be one of the last things that passes my mind ;)
@AngelicJim I am glad to see another for whom feels the same :) It was a time we shared that was of our generation and one that i pity others for whom missed it, especially when it comes to the Amiga.
I wonder if this game was the most effective Amiga commercial ever (despite not being a commercial at all). I remember seeing this while I was used to C64 graphics. It was more amazing and breathtaking than even the most advanced 3D chip is today!
Too bad the gameplay itself was "just" a platform game but somehow it didn't matter back then.
Listening to this on modern speakers with subwoofer and stuff makes it even more amazing. I highly recommend putting this on in the living room.
if i had to a pick a game soundtrack that was influenced by this, i would pick dk country. does anyone see what im talkin about. the drums and other instruments definately sound donkey kong country-ish
@mc14halo Well, both games were composed by British musicians who are named David and their last name starts with W. :)
David Wise (DK Country composer) said his instruments were from a Roland U-110 and a Korg Wavestation. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever find out where these samples came from...unless we're lucky enough to hear from David Whittaker. He used these same instruments in Loopz.
I used to love playing this game, mainly because I had a cracked version so I never took damage. I'd usually play it when I was angry or frustrated, and I typically stopped every time the music changed to listen to whichever piece was playing all the way through before go onward. Wasn't quite as impressed by the music in the sequels, though.
I still remember how enamored I was with the graphics and music of this game - but even as a little teen kid - I still remember how much I thought the gameplay SUCKED! haha - still one of the most memorable titles for me ever for some reason.
The highlights were Kick Off 2 (still the best soccer game of all time), Silkworm (OMG what a shooter), etc ...
Yeah same here,I remember S.o.t.B for it´s awesome graphics, insanely bad gameplay but most of all David's AWESOME music.Incredible.Unbelievably good shit.
I totally agree with all the comments here. I came looking for this video BECAUSE I remember the music from all those years ago. Amazing for its time and still remarkably memorable today. Thanks for the memory! :)
funny how we all remember a game for its music over its gameplay, funny that we remember this at all really lol. Dont get game themes to stick in peoples minds nowadays as much. Even with the ability to create far better sounds.
By the way i only ever played this game for its music lol. Game was awfull
Hi guys! First of all I'm Atari ST/STE/F030 user and dedicated enthusiast, but I have to tell you that the music and overall atmosphere of SoD on Amiga is something really unique. We all know, that ST ports of this game (both 1 and 2 part) were total crap (especially 1 part) due to lousy coding and it's a real pain, we cannot have proper cover on ST. I'm sure that with some imagination, one could make the decent cover, even with some limitations. Just to catch this atmosphere. I love it.
By SoD of course I meant Shadow of the Beast (SotB)... I don't know why I used SoD - I must have been thinking of this rock/metal group from USA, from early nineties: Stormtroopers of Death. Excuse me.
Once again - so simple game with beautiful graphics and music, which having unique atmosphere. Just - playable, as all games should be, doesn't matter on which platform. With imagination and dedication you can make best use of any platform and create such a unique titles. 10/10
Is this PC amiga-emulator (winuae, winfellow) version? I just think some sounds aren't played properly, like in 1st song where long fading sound has like something cut effect in there. Can't remember how it was on my own amiga.
Brilliant....this music has stayed with me for nearly 30 years.....the game was hard but used to love playing it to listen to the music. For the younger PC users, you have no idea of the impact of stuff like this when it came out and no other PC could do music and graphics like the Amiga. I still have an Amiga 2000 as a keepsake ;-)
Well, this video explained to me what that song in Lemmings was about. I never had an Amiga, only a SNES, so to me, this song was from a seemingly special Lemmings level named "Beast".
@Myriachan: Now you mention it! It never got it either, since I played Lemmings but not Shadow of the Beast (yes, I was something of a barbarian back then, but I prefer to call it "straying off the beaten path").
@nanuaraq0409 you dont think I havent? Yorkshire, moors, the dales, peak district, brecon beacons, Lake district ALL have sufficient woodland for my hobbies. If one cant get to the dark places, one must bring the dark places to one self. as my old head master use to say
