@ballinskillzkyle02 Ya, I guess I do sometimes. But this was just one of those days where I didn't have much patience. And not all this stuff is free. Some is traded towards repair work on other stuff.
Good old Dimension 2400s. I made mine into a Hackintosh. It works quite well though I'm only using the basic video driver( fixed resolution @ 1024x768) with an old Riva 128 PCI video card. The onboard screws up with OSX. I also added a Realtek Network card. Its pretty snappy despite the lack of hardware video acceleration.
As far as that E-Machine, lol! Thats about par for the course. The Windows XP with 128mb of ram is a good laugh.
There are two versions of the Dim2400. The home version has a Celeron, 256MB RAM, an 80GB HDD, WinXP Home Edition, a dull metal case, and a square side panel. The business version has a Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, a 40GB HDD, WinXP Pro, a shiny metal case, and a curvy side panel
@Maxxarcade Look closely. You will find that one looks slightly shinier then the other. And try swapping the side panels. They probably are not the same
@MixerVM You're right, the side panels are shaped differently at the front edge. Color-wise, the front bezel seems to be more purplish on one. Hard to tell because of the dirt though. Weird how they did that. I wonder why they didn't use the same case for both.
@Maxxarcade They probably wanted to be able to easily tell the two apart from the side/back view. Or I think one of them was an earlier model. Check the sticker on the bottom. Look for MFG DATE: on it if its there.
@OTAlucard I think I messaged you about it a while back. I just haven't taken the board out yet, because it's at the bottom of the pile. I hope to get to that soon.
Yeah that old emachines i have with it's athlon 64 3000+ and 512mb of ram runs windows 7 beautifully. There are some slowdowns as it has to use a lot of virtual memory, but it runs aero like a champ! i wouldn't have run aero if it wasn't for the fact that despite the crappy radeon xpress 200, it got a 5.9 aero score in WEI. What's more, i have the frame buffer down to 16mb to give the system as much ram as possible without buying more. (it's not my pc, more like the fam's)
@Knaeckebrotsaege Yep, that's so true. That's why these computer companies make huge profits on assembling computers on the cheap for sale to the general public, educational, and corporations using el cheapo parts and paying techicians to fix them.
@technogeek678 Yep, just gotta finish going through them and figure out what is worth fixing up for sale. They all have Windows COA's on them, so it's easy to do a fresh install. Some are Windows XP, and some are Windows 2000.
@legogamecreator Ya, these just need a lot more RAM and a fresh install of Windows.
I fixed up an old Dimension for someone once that turned out amazing. I think it was an 8200 or 8400, but I can't remember for sure. It was a 2.8Ghz P4 with AGP. Installed a Geforce 6200, 2GB RAM, 7200RPM hard drive, and Windows 7. It was a speed demon for its age!
I think the little Dim2400 is "under appreciated", but it has largely to do with the fact that Dell sold them for as little as $299 with...hmm, dunno exactly...128 or 256MB RAM installed. Certainly not enough. Probably resulted in lots of them going to the dumpster.
I'd love to know if the AGP slot could be populated and used, but I don't think I'm the man to do it.
@uxwbill I've wondered the same thing myself. I suppose some other parts might be missing too, but I can certainly look into that! Same goes for the RAM slots. If I could add the other two and use them, it would really help.
@Maxxarcade I don't really know how to prepare a PCB that doesn't have waiting through-holes, which is really what has kept me from trying. (Which is to say that while I think some kind of drill is involved, I don't have a single clue.)
Getting to use the "back two" RAM slots would also theoretically enable dual-channel mode for the memory controller. As it is, Dell crippled these even more by arranging the memory sockets such that only single-channel mode is usable.
@uxwbill I had a look at the motherboard earlier, and it looks like several resistors and caps are missing around the AGP slot as well. Bummer, because I was getting ready to solder in a connector :-)
This one also had only 2 positions for RAM. I must have been thinking of a similar system that had 2 of the 4 installed.
can you do a video of windows xp removing all the crap and restoring the computer back to original as it should when new? i have a sony vaio (one of the first ones) with xp and it really needs a good work over
@fordbroncodave There wouldn't be much to see really. Just need to boot off the Windows CD, format, and re-install. But I think I'll also add a bigger CPU and more RAM too.
Why hate on the Dell computers, I still own a Dimension 4550 (just needed new ram cuz it was slow), My school uses those Dimension 2400', and the other white ones. I own a dimension 8110 and use it as my server. runs great
@NightWolfEditing I don't hate Dells at all, though I think they're gotten a bit cheap these days. Nonetheless most I've worked with have been pretty nice, once they get some more RAM and a fresh install.
The dimension 4550 in this video has lots of leaking capacitors behind the CPU, and the case is broken. Hence why I'll likely use it for parts.
I just got a pair of Radio Shack end table speakers at a junk store for 20$, from the 70s. I think they are Utah drivers, they sound nice too.
I am still using my Dell D-4600 that is aobut eight years old and still going strong. I've only had to replace hard drives in it, and a fan. I take it outside occasionally, and blow it out with a small leaf blower to get all that dust out of it.
Oh man, emachines. I restored a model very similar to the one shown in the video. It was a piece of crap too. Replaced the optical drive. The case was pretty gross. When I first opened it up, it smelled like it sat in a barn next to a pile of horse excrement for a few years.
The funny ones are the emachines with the "never obsolete" labels on them.

@MixerVM Funny you mention that... I think these 2400's both have the same case, but everything else is like you said.
Maxxarcade 10 months ago
@Maxxarcade No, the one with XP PRO had a shiny case and a curvy side panel and the one with XP HOME had a square side panel and dull case
MixerVM 10 months ago
@MixerVM Out of curiosity, I went and sat them right next to each other. The cases are identical, other than one looking a tad darker due to grime.
