It takes a very serious matter and makes a complete mockery out of it. Referee abuse is a serious problem and I for one would like to see more direct solutions to this problem. The FA needs to start thinking about the future of the game. Using technology to help referees make the right calls would drastically reduce disrespect towards refs
For example, Iain Hume was nearly killed by a deliberate elbow by Chris Morgan. The referee saw it, made the wrong call and only gave a yellow card (Morgan would have been in jail had it been on the street). The FA said they couldn't upgrade it to a red card as the referee saw it and gave a yellow. The same goes for diving. If a ref misses a dive, the FA should punish the player after the game.
The FA doesn't allow the use of the 4th official to watch replays. Until then, there will be constant abuse towards referees as the FA gives them an impossible job. Its the FA that's the problem, not the players, not the refs. Players will abuse refs who have a bad game in the same way fans abuse a player having a bad game. And only when the FA grows a pair and starts punishing players after matches for what they do in game, will they stop.
as a 14 year old ref, just become one last month, i believe this is a great program and has stopped so much agro, with my dad a coach he cantell a difference since!
@Gtrevolutionmad Afraid the feeling won't last. As an 18 year old now level 4 I can tell you as soon as you start reffing mens football the respect campaign goes out the window.
The way referees explain their decisions to players (and the fans) in-game and obviously use technology in rugby would make things just so much easier. And where did they get the one match in three statistic from? One match in three played without a referee? Professionally? Or are they counting the 6v6 kickabouts in a park or me vs my dad in the living room?
jkarani, we had no problem with implementing the "10 yard rule" as you call it. No, the problem was that it was an experiment that was only for use at the upper levels, and you could only do it if you had cautioned someone for something done AFTER the kick was given. The thing was that you can score anywhere across the Goal line in Rugby, but there's just an 8ft x 8 yard target in football. It'd work better in Football if the player taking the kick could move the ball 10 yards in ANY direction.
look i'm a ref and i'm pretty sure that there is no rule saying we can send people off who 'harass' us they can be booked for dissent and only be sent off if they use insulting, abusive or offensive language/gestures. That rule does not cover harassing so no there is not a lot of measures us refs can take to make sure we are respected
Don't worry I always book one of them straight away. If someone says you must be fucking koking me would you find that offensive, insulting or abusive. No it's not it's more disrespect and people having very little respect for referees. I'm only 13 years old so could not posssibly answer your question from many years ago.
d) Any team with a record of dissent gets DEDUCTED POINTS - Financial penalties don't matter one single bit to the big guns of the premier league (Who are time and time again the most abusive sides towards official and are the ones who youths are most likely to observe.)
The FA/UEFA/FIFA could fix this oh so easily, but they're too busy negotitating their next sponsorship deal it seems.
a) Only Captains can talk to Refs unless refs wish to speak to another player.
b) In the higher levels of the game, the ref should be as well assisted as is feasible, more technology involved in decision making, greater role for the 4th official.
c) No nonsense approach to dissent, any act should give a player a yellow card AND a sin bin period to cool off. That would bring an end to it pretty quickly
tbh, i think the refs should be respected, when they do there jobs right
not if they make high profile blunders like howard webb at birmingham vs wolves or stuart atwell at reading vs watford. refs are authority figures and should be respected; providing they can do the jobs right
when are the FA going to shut up that non-stop moaner that is Sir Alex Ferguson? his latest childish rant over his team's fixture list makes me laugh, other teams would just get on with it if it happened to them. No wonder Man Utd are so disliked, he should try working 9-10 hours a day on meagers wage. I wonder if he is secretly hoping that Southampton and Derby knock his team out of FA and Carling Cup, then again he will probably moan about them defeats like the bad loser he is. LMAO
the FA do not need to shut him up, his complaints were valid, the fa will always give liverpool an easy schedule because if they do not they will be killed by the liverppool fans, just like you lot killed juve fans and your own fans. :D
The Respect campaign is good but it is aimed at the wrong people. Dissent needs to be eliminated from the professional game. Professional players argue with referees and it filters down to grass routes level. When the professionals stop arguing the rest of the game will fall into line.
Those who run football seem to be more interested in money than the game itself. Unless this changes I fear that amateur football will die out in London within 15 years because no-one will want to referee.
i am a referee in Slovakia in second lowest league and i think that behaviour of players is strange. u havent got any respect and card is nothing to them. however this video is great :D
haha, amazingly well-constructed advert! every single second of it is ingenious, just a blast. especially the howard webb bit, with capello wrapping up the scene with a now infamous one-liner!
no refs no game lol that game would be fun to play in more like UFC than football half the time any fouls go feel sorry for guy at end when he nerly died from being strangled whens the next one coming out but capello is legend he shuda said that when they said you are next ENGLAND MANAGER "u must be jokkin"
history has taught us the human race needs scapegoats to channel anger towards. referees are like salman rushdie or the jews. fuck referees. get a real job.
i've been playin grassroots footy for well over 20 years, and i've NEVER had a referee in a game
i used to play pickup games with friends and random people i saw on the streets and in the parks, and we all had mutual respect for each other. yes there were arguments every now and then, but they were quickly put aside so that we could quickly get back to playing the game
the people in this video are beyond stupid and i've never played in a game like that
I have been playing grassroots football for just under 20 years and have come to the conclusion that without referees there cannot be competitive football matches.
I have played in games that have contained similar behaviour to the parodies in this video.
If respect is earned then is it any wonder that the petulant children who mince up and down the pitches each week kicking the ball are universally despised. The referees do their best for a pittance considering the lowlifes they have to work with. Football is dying, attendances are down, clubs are going bankrupt and in the end, hopefully we will no longer be flooded with this crap, the children on the pitches and their thuggish tribal supporters with the mindless childish chants
Very funny the way the bloke from Eastenders said "don't make me hurt you Leslie"lol then the real bald ref said he won't ref the game and u man says "you'll be useless anyhow" brillant

There's simple solutions:
a) Only Captains can talk to Refs unless refs wish to speak to another player.
b) In the higher levels of the game, the ref should be as well assisted as is feasible, more technology involved in decision making, greater role for the 4th official.
c) No nonsense approach to dissent, any act should give a player a yellow card AND a sin bin period to cool off. That would bring an end to it pretty quickly

If the refs stopped being so arrogant, they'd be a little more respected.

The campaign isn't working. You still see players being stupid, abusive, dangerous, and it ruins the game.
