the ccommercial makes me laugh bt i do have to say.. its way stereotypical. i thought this generation was about breaking down those stereotypes because i can testify that i am a STUDENT athlete. all athletes at my school are. JUST SAYING! bt thumbs up to making me laugh! :)
lol WHIP is a new age sabermetric stat? i have baseball cards from the early 80s with that stat on the back. you're really new age and innovative espn.
First line is "This dude has a sick VORP". Value Over Replacement Player - It's a statistic that nobody in the Sabre community has used in years, and has since been replaced by several other metrics, most notably WAR. Prima facie evidence that the people at ESPN still know as little about baseball as the people at the Discovery Institute know about evolutionary biology.
the .03 difference in lincecum's WHIP would probably come from his leaving the large expanses over AT & T ballpark since as stated by Bill James ballparks have a big effect on the way pitchers pitch but yeah the commercials not that good

I love how the two top rated comments (which I have both thumbed down) say this is the best commercial ever when in actuality its a horrible commercial that took very little thinking to make. Probably scibbled at some gay bar napkin like the rest of ESPN's terrible commercials.
@ZapatistaDiF Well, that's what makes them nerds! If they understood their stats, they could be sitting with the cool kids.
@brettiefresh Even with the difference in ball park (and maybe feeling more confident in front of a home crowd) WHIPs that are only .03 apart are statistically identical, and there cannot be any distinction between the two.
What accounts for that 0.03 difference? VARIANCE! Mother effing VARIANCE! I swear to god, NOBODY on ESPN has taken a stats class in their entire lives.
All three times I've seen this ad, I've literally screamed "variance!" at the TV. Nice EWP drop, but us stat nerdjocks are more likely to be discussing BABIP, xFIP, wOBA, etc.
@ZapatistaDiF its just supposed to be funny. Dont take it so seriously. Its not ESPN knowing about it, the high schoolers are trying to figure it out. Get over yourself.
@ZapatistaDiF I have to agree with MrAtomicBond, it's just supposed to be funny dude. And in addition, some would argue that park factors have more to do with that difference than variance.

What does WHIP even stand for?? also, OPS??
semperfoo24 1 month ago
@semperfoo24 WHIP = Walks-Hits-Innings Pitched (a stat for pitchers) OPS = On-base plus slugging (a stat for batters)
