@RadcliffOfCrymod I am soooooooooo glad you liked the commentary. Yes -- that is Alex singing. I have a video up of Alex singing Over the Rainbow as well.
I want to tell you that just your tone in your voice lets the world know you are one of the caring people who truly love animals. I thank you for showing others that you can connect with animals in a loving environment.
@Wheelchaser1962 What a beautiful thing to say. I am really flattered and humbled by your observation. Yes, I love animals and I truly cherish my own. Thank you. sukey
This was such a sweet video. I truly enjoyed watching it. You have a gorgeous bird and the sweetest (and most patient) little dog. It really looked like little Alex was teasing and playing with your dog, and the dog was playing right back!
Haha, those birds are pretty smart. Seemed like it wanted to tug at war with the dog even though he could not possibly win. Dog is really good sport though, damn fine canine you got there.
I have always been told that it is a bad to give wet kisses to greys because of the germs and bacteria in your saliva. Have you ever worried about Alex coming into contact with Apache's saliva?
I also have two other videos of the same two dogs posted. Just click on" More Videos From bootini1". We've talked about SnoPals before whe I had asked you about our two Eskies having the same name. You were right on in your response.
Yes it does brake the heart. Your parrot is lucky. But back in his home country, these birds just disappear as fast as the wind, we should all be aware of that and, in the name of our love for them, do something in change of their devotion to us. Their home forests disappear for our "exotic" wood furnitures, parquets, etcetera, and their relatives disappear with the forest, like gorilla, chimpanzee, bonobos, bongos, elephants, etcetera. We should all be aware of that and possibly do something.
I was lingin in Congo Brazzaville, where there are flocks of these birds. And they are so nice to see. I know that your parrot, like many which are sold in Europe or America are born in captivity. But unfortunately, there are still thousands that are captured in their nest back in Gabon or Congo, mothers are killed hile trying to defend their nestlings, then you find these little creatures for sale for peanuts in the streets, and they normally die because they are just too young. Very sad.
Your story breaks my heart. Alex is like my little kid and my hilarious friend and my heart all in one. To think these special creatures are abused and mishandles is unconscionable to me. They are so intelligent and loving.
Thanks! Alex has a real mind of his own. I think and he is sure he is the Alpha of the house. He has been a LOT easier to train than Apache who also thinks he's the Alpha of the house.
After watching a bunch of videos on african grey's, I started to want one. However, after I read your comments, I realized that it would be nearly impossible for me to really take good care of one. It's a shame since they are such intelligent and beautiful birds.
On a side note, I'm very impressed with how odedient and handsome your dog is! I was afraid that Alex would get chomped but your dog obviously is well trained.
It's not work in a bad way -- it's immense fun. I'm home all day and my desk is next to Alex's cage. He gets all-day attention and so do I, actually. if you are home a lot and can give your Grey attention then it is incredibly rewarding! Plus, they are hilarious!
Sukey, Thanks for responding once again. People don't realize just how loud and a bird can really be and how long they can keep it up. I had a Duskey Lorry for many years and he could talk up a storm whether you wanted him to or not. Another problem that I learned is trying to find a vet who is really good with birds. A littie trick for when you need to beak trim. Put a pencil crossways in the birds mouth, when he bites down the beak will be positioned just right for cutting.
I'm reading all the the people's comments about how they are going to get an African Grey after seeing your great video. Please, please let these people know how much time, effort and patience it takes to create a bird such as Alex. I'm sure you know that the sad fact is that there are many pets are returned because the owners didn't do the research to see if there is a good match between the new pet and the new owner. Its not just giving food and water.
Bootini1 -- you are so right. I totally agree that I need to let people know that these birds are like having a 5 year old child. You can't ignore them -- you treat them with respect and you spend lots of time with them. I work at home and Alex and i converse all day long. He has a huge vocabulary because of that and he knows he is extremely loved. He can be a brat and loud -- but usually if I whistle a tune he likes, he'll quiet down immediately, just wanting to know everything is okay.
These birds are returned to pet stores because the owner didn't know they are a huge commitment. But every second you put in to these intelligent and lovable and very affectionate birds is well worth it. I can't imagine my life now without Alex in it. Alex just turned 6 and I have had him since he was 5 months old. I tell him I love him tons of times a day and he tells me he loves me, too! And -- sometimes he says, "Sukey LOVES Alex." And I say, "Yep! Sukey loves Alex." And I do.
We had an American Eskimo also named Apache after his father. We got him from a breeder just outside Green Bay, WI.. Is there a chance that they could be distant relatives?
They aren't related I don't think. But I am familiar with Snopals which is the breeder of your Apache from Apache. Right? I bet he is just beautifl though. His dad is gorgeous! sukey
Your right about his dad. It was a long time ago but I do remember an Apache something is hie Pedagree. His full name was Apache's White Bear but he responded to Chunky Monkey (Long story). Sadly he died a few years ago but his ashes live in in promenent display. You are also correct about his breeder. The last I heard she was raising Ragdoll cats.
Lol!! "Are you gonna take him for a walk?" lol and your Alex kind of acts like the parrot on "One Hundred And One Dalmations" Trying to kind of act like a dog lol! Great video 5 Stars!
I did not disagree with the fact that African Greys are smart . My disagreement was with the fact you called the lady in the video annoying, Thats not true, she is very nice and you are very rude person
hahahaha oh my goodness what a little stinker! jsut would not leave the treat alone i must say Apache was very well behaved he deserves another treat! haha completely adorable
If someone would try to take something from my dogs mouth, he'd be furious. You're so lucky he doesn't try to bite Alex. They are just two darlings, adorable! ^^
You are very sweet. This isn't the same Alex, but it was extremely sad he died. You should read about the famous Alex. There's a great bood by Dr. Pepperberg called Alex and Me. it just came out and it is wonderful! I highly recommend it! Thanks!
dog and cat spit is like poison to birds, they dont have the natural flora in their system to fight bacteria. cats especially. just gotta watch out birdie!!
Its an enzyme that hurts them as much as possible bacteria. all creatures have bacteria in their mouths-especially the ones that lick their asses, tho not the same as human bacteria. Birds do not have enough normal flora (bacteria) to fight introduced bacteria so they can die.
That is, in fact, NOT true. Dogs have more bacteria in their saliva than humans. Letting the parrot chew on the same bone as the dog is a very bad idea.
SO CUTE, BUT NOT WORTH RISK. SALIVA V. BAD FOR BIRDS.
This is adorable and 2 critters are having a grand time, BUT, ANIMAL AND HUMAN SALIVA DANGEROUS TO BIRDS!! LOVE YOUR BIRD? Check w/ avian vet to verify that SALIVA BAD FOR BIRDS! IT'S NOT WORTH IT.
Don't give food, mouth kisses, don't let dog/cat mouth them or toys. I did it too, till I learned..
Commentary adorable too. Just not worth it to expose intelligent, beautiful grey to the risk of doggie drool/spit/saliva. Thanks.
Great vid. I really miss my grey. I lovd him so much. They are so interactive and intelligent. No other animal like them. Im surprised your dog didnt eat the grey after he bit his toes. What breed of dog is he? Very cute
Thanks! My dog, who was a puppy when I shot the video, is a mini-American Eskimo. What you don't see in the shot was my foot between the two of them. If Apache had made any move toward Alex he would have been stopped.
I can't imagine having a more fun pet than Alex. He is just a riot!
hehehe that vid is so funny. I had a grey for 8 years when I was growing up. I really miss him. They are so interactive and intelligent. It's funny seeing Alex take the dog on. I'm surprised the dog didn't eat him after he bit his toes. My dad had a grey when he was growing up too. It used to tell the dog to go outside when it came in the house. The dog woul listen to him and leave lol
haha great video- i am seriously considering buying an african grey and was doing some research to see how they interact with dogs (my girlfriend has a pomeranian-poodle that is about 12 lbs and looks very similar to Apache, only black and brown)
how old is the grey and how long have the two lived together?
Thanks. You have to be very careful with your Grey and having a dog. Now that Apache is older, I won't let him get close to Alex because I don't trust him. The bird is pretty vulnerable next to a dog. Really, I think having a dog around the bird isn't such a great idea in retrospect.
Haha that is soo funny because I was looking for a breeder in Michigan but I found that same one you got Apache from. That breeder told me to go to Sujos american eskimos in MI to find a puppy because a few years ago they got an amazing pup there. When I contacted the breeder in MI they told me that they didnt have any pups but they gave us the retired show dog named Cherokee. What was apaches sire and dames name? I could see if Apaches parents was one of Cherokees pups?
Apache's full name is CH'Morningstar's Apache Nation. His sire is Morningstar's Crown of Glory and the dam CH'PR'Trinity Legendary Sweet Nothin. He is related to GRCH'PR'trinity Legendaery Dakota and PR'Trinity Magestic and more. Do any of those names sound familiar?
I love the video! Where did you get the eskie from and how old is he? I also have an african grey and an eskie. My eskies name is Cherokee. They both look alot alike.
KJ! That's amazing. My last Eskie's name was Cherokee! Apache is from the breeder Morningstar in Texas. He is about a year and a half. Aren't they just the most fun pets?!?
You're right. The 'famous' Alex died in September of 2007. And it was very sad. This is the not-so-famous Alex. He is still alive and stealing my dog's toys!
I'm not quite sure which is the cutest... your dog or your african grey.
I collected my african grey (Macy Grey is the name we gave her) last week from the breeders. She is only 12 weeks old but wants me all the time with her. Only 12 weeks but is showing her brains already. It's impossible to be lonely with Macy
Thanks! You'll wonder how you ever got along without Macy Grey! Darling name! The highlight of every day is when your parrot talks to you and says, "I love you!"
I am already wondering about that ! I am in love with African Greys but your dog is just too much. Can I kidnap it ?! ha ha... don't worry ! You dog is like a soft toy come alive !!
Enjoy them !! And... more videos of both of them please !!!
Thanks. I agree -- Apache is extremely gentle with Alex. He knows Alex is a family member!

I agree with Emly... Cutest thing I've ever seen bird-dog wise... but very unhealthy for Alex. Both animals are adorable, though! =)

The dog woul listen to him and leave lol

haha great video- i am seriously considering buying an african grey and was doing some research to see how they interact with dogs (my girlfriend has a pomeranian-poodle that is about 12 lbs and looks very similar to Apache, only black and brown)
how old is the grey and how long have the two lived together?
gwisawesome 3 years ago

KJ,
Apache's full name is CH'Morningstar's Apache Nation.

Aren't they just the most fun pets?!?

did video is sorta sad. Because Alex died in 2007. If you don't belive me, you can find it on youtube somewhere.
magic4Geti 3 years ago
You're right. The 'famous' Alex died in September of 2007. And it was very sad. This is the not-so-famous Alex. He is still alive and stealing my dog's toys!

I'm not quite sure which is the cutest... your dog or your african grey.
I collected my african grey (Macy Grey is the name we gave her) last week from the breeders. She is only 12 weeks old but wants me all the time with her. Only 12 weeks but is showing her brains already. It's impossible to be lonely with Macy

Thanks! You'll wonder how you ever got along without Macy Grey! Darling name! The highlight of every day is when your parrot talks to you and says, "I love you!"
sukeyhawk 3 years ago
I am already wondering about that ! I am in love with African Greys but your dog is just too much. Can I kidnap it ?! ha ha... don't worry ! You dog is like a soft toy come alive !!
Enjoy them !! And... more videos of both of them please !!!

This is a really sweet video, but be careful. Dog and cat saliva, as well as human's, can be toxic to birds.

Thanks and I'm glad I learned about saliva toxicity! Appreciate your comment! Thanks again!
