Im' a long time Phil Keaggy fan who is not a Christian .I am' Buddist and I believe in God. Phil is talented and blessed man who has dedicated his life to God and good in this world. Respect his and other's rights if you wish them to do the same to you!
@DAYSLEEPERWIL You are absolutely correct. i have enjoyed Phil for many years and this is a great example of a someone blessed with the gift of music and a creative mind. There are all kinds of forums and forms of media we can use to witness to others. Perhaps it would be better to keep the subject matter in context with the forum it is presented in.

@XxRedoDeathxX How do you know he is intolerant? Have you met him in person? Do you know him personally? Phil is one of the kindest, nicest people on the planet. Every knee shall bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! Love you man!
Does it really matter whether he is a Christian or not? It's like you're trying to announce some sort of victory over him being a religious man. Totally unnecessary. It's like every time Jimmy paige plays someone is like " and he is an atheist". It doesn't matter so shut the fuck up.
yeah but Tommy Emanuel still kills him in skill level on all areas if we were to decide the greatest guitarist in the world there are so many hidden talents out there that it would be impossible to declare the best of anything.
Jimi Hendrix was recently named the greatest guitarist ever by Guitar World magazine. People have always thought that was true anyways, even in the days when Jimi was alive. He was asked in an interview once how it felt to be the greatest guitarist around and Hendrix replied, "I don't know, did you ask Phil Keaggy?"
This guy has nowhere near the maturity of expression as say a Jeff Beck, Steve Lukather, Steve Carlton, Leslie West, Roy Buchanan etc etc the list goes on... Sorry but he's a B player
@brickogden you're quite wrong, and by a long shot. if you see him live you will understand. also, and while i am a huge Toto fan, Steve Lukather is nwhere near the same league as Beck, Santana, Bonamassa, or even Eddie Van Halen.
@brickogden - not sure what your A list looks like other than the fine guitarists you mention here -- Guitarplayer magazine has named Keaggy as the top fingerplayer guitarist for years..it for good reason. Phl Keaggy is in the peripheral of secular music since he is mostly a writer and performer for the "Christian" crowd - yet he is a legend in the world of the guitar - figure that one out... and it doesn't add up to "B".
@revere406 Fair enough. I read a lot of comments here while listening to the 'performance'. The comments appear too gushing. I don't hear any soul here- no pain, anger, or joy. Where's the humanity? The guitar is an instrument of expression- not a toy only to master technically. There's a level above technical mastery. Other A listers: Neal Schon, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, Ronnie Montrose, Tommy Bolin, Richie Blackmore etc. I'm still just scratching the surface...
@brickogden, Of all those that you mentioned which one has allowed himself to play in a Christian setting? Not a one. I have had the opportunity to meet Phil Keaggy and have to say that his soul, his joy, his humanity is in his playing. He does not express pain or anger through his music instead he looks on the bright side of life. He is a master guitarist plain and simple. And the comment from BrianBinOR is right on the money he is humble as can be.

@highintel oh ok sorry. I tried to look back to make sure but I must have missed part. but I don't think his being Christian kept him from being mainstream. Stryper went mainstream in the 80's P.O.D. went mainstream a few years ago and there have been others. I think it's because his music isn't necessarily the mainstream type. he's more of a musician's musician. and yes Religion can be used for evil but that doesn't mean religion itself is.
you can kill someone with a brick or you can use that brick to build a house. so the brick isn't evil, it's what the person possessing it does with it. Unfortunately many men have distorted religion and used it for control. but we could make the same argument for politics. itself isn't bad but men have killed many people through the abuse of it.
@garywingrove I agree 100%. I went to a pedophile Christian Preschool. I saw first hand how a man can use the belief in a God to make children subservient to him. I think the Idea of god is a beautiful idea gone horribly wrong.
(Sodom and Gomorrah) is a great story about how religion sets up an unconditional disgust for homosexuals and non believers. As far as to claim they are the reason Volcanoes and Earthquakes exist. Consequently, homosexuals still cannot marry. Coincidence?
@highintel sorry you had a bad experience! the Sodom and Gomorrah story is a little deeper than some people realize. at one point the angels were at Lot's house and the men of the city were trying to get Lot to bring them outside so they could rape them! Homo or Hetero we'd all agree that's wrong. so it was more than just homosexuality. as far as whether or not they can marry and all that, it depends on the church. some are much more open to that. not necessarily my position though.
@garywingrove There are several stories you can take at deeper value and see a larger message. That's what's good about that book. I have several friends with no direction in life and that book gave them purpose. I love that part of the Bible. It's all the other tools left inside to scare people that I worry about.
We are all fine and dandy when the lights are on, but if we get hit with a global catastrophe (Like a meteor) I guarantee out will come the torches and pitch forks.
@highintel well many people take the Bible out of context. in fact what you said is scrpitural! it says in 1 Corinthians 13 about how you can have faith and hope but without love it's all meaningless! many people forget that the most important thing is to live as an example rather than to preach at people but at the same time be knowledgable and not ashamed. but yes many people do overreach and they don't understand that they're turning people off so it's counterproductive!
@highintel so did u just discover utube. or quit ur meds. either way u beat the keyboard fo sho. its a vid of a dude playing guitar but u and ur boyfriends found a way to make it a dating site. i bet seeing a bible makes u cry. whhhaaa their stuffin it down my throat whhhaaa im an oppressed pussy whhaa better oppress them before they get me wwhhhaaa...yup ur a puss
@tbiler and why would you attack me when Spud2ooo mentions him ( 2 days ago) being a true believer in Christ like it makes a difference? Didn't see you jump all over that like a Dog in heat.. yet you slobbered all over my comment.
That mentality is the same crazy shit in the middle east. You think believing in Hebrew tales makes a difference in a person? I think it makes you blind and a Hypocrite. Which is why you attack me and not your fellow Christian logs floating down stream. .
@highintel I never said anything about Christianity, yet you were quick to go there. What makes your anger and rage towards Christians any different than the anger of radical Muslims? I guess the difference is....you haven't blown anyone up lately?
The legendary, one and only greatest guitarist of all time (in my not-so-humble opinion) - Mr. Phil Keaggy. SO unknown and so deserving of acknowledgment.
I got to hang out with Phil back in my home town of Ashland Ohio. Phil would drive up from Warren Ohio and play at our College. It was awesome just spending the day with him and other brothers and sister. Glad to see he's stll going strong.
@XxRedoDeathxX God is about love not judgment. I can feel the love in your statements or rather the passion. God is there for you. All you have to do is accept his love. Forget all those who try to judge who is right or wrong, they don't matter, but God does and he is waiting.
i play guitar and have been a fan of both keaggy and steve ray vaughan for almost 30 years.keaggy i believe would be more versatile but vaughan played with unsurpassed power and emotion.both are world class in their own right.keaggy and satriani are probably the tech masters of all time but hendrix and vaughan can just make music as good as it gets imho.like em all.
Have never met the man, but now truly believe he has the ability to make us all better people through the sheer power of music! Way to rock/inspire Phil, keep on truckin!!
Stevie was a better pentatonic Blues man. This is true. However, that was all he could do. He had nowhere near the harmonic and melodic sense of Keaggy when it comes to expanding beyond the pentatonic horizon. Plus Phil is a better fingerstylist.
I was about 14 when I met him the first time. It was the Saturday before his wife gave birth to their first daughter. About 8 years later I ran into him in the same city at the hotel he was staying and he actually remembered me and my father and what we were driving that day. What a loving, humble disciple of the Lord - great man.
Phil Keaggy is one of my favorite artists to listen to, my favorite album is probably 220, my favorite song- definitely "the great escape". No one can top his guitar playing.
No rumor--he's written about it. He lost the finger as a child while playing on/around a water well on the family farm. If you thought this solo was good with only 9 fingers....try being one of or not "The Best" fingerstyle guitar players of all time!!! Check out Beyond Nature, The Master and the Musician, Acoustic Sketches, Lights of Madrid, In The Quiet Hours. Man of Faith and Conviction. A true guitar hero.
I saw Phil in the early 70s when I was 15. He did something similar to this as an instrumental part to the song "Rejoice" from his "What a Day" album. Some of the sanctified folk in the audience walked out. To this day I'm not sure what could possibly have offended them. It was magnificent!
@roaringwaterbay He's missing the middle finger on his right hand. It is rumored that he lost it when he was four years old while playing on his family's farm.
wow is right. I finally got to see him last year at RevGen, I sat perfectly still like a 5 year old, I could have sat there all night. After something like 30 years, I met one of my heroes
As others have said, this man is the genuine article. I've met him twice, once when we were both a lot younger, and another chance meeting many years later in the Atlanta airport. Both times he spoke with me like an old friend, was not hurried, listened, thanked me. Not one speck of false pride or ego in him. And he just LOVES playin - sharing that gifting
Phil Keaggy is amazing. I grew up listening to his music (thanks Dad!) and had the pleasure to meet him when I was very young. He was very kind and took the time to talk to me and make me feel special even though I was just a little kid. He signed my copy of Time I, and it's the most humbling autograph I've ever received.
Keaggy is just one of those musicians who has so much respect from his fans. I noticed a couple parts where one of us 'common folk' would get scrutinized for being a little out of tune - Keaggy's fans start cheering before he's even gotten some notes out.
@TheFarewellFolks Clapton may have said it but Hendrix said it on the Johnnie Carson show and I Quote" So Jimmy how does it feel to be the greatest guitar player in the world? I dont know you'll have to ask Phil Keaggy"
@jriley3271 Never actually happened. Jimi passed away before Glass Harp's first album was released. They recorded it at Electic Ladyland studios. If I recall correctly, Jimi died their last day there.
Keaggy has long insisted that such stories are completely unfounded, noting that "it was impossible that Jimi Hendrix could ever have heard me...We...recorded our first album at Electric Lady Studios two weeks after his unfortunate death, so I just can’t imagine how he could’ve heard me. I think it’s just a rumor that someone’s kept alive, and it must be titillating enough to keep an interest there...So I don’t think it was said…and that’s it for that!"[6]
Keaggy has long insisted that such stories are completely unfounded, ..."it was impossible that Jimi Hendrix could ever have heard me...We...recorded our first album at Electric Lady Studios two weeks after his unfortunate death, .... I think it’s just a rumor that someone’s kept alive, and it must be titillating enough to keep an interest there...So I don’t think it was said…and that’s it for that! . He doesn't court greatness, which makes him even better in my tiny mind.
I can't believe I first heard of Phil Keaggy within the last couple months. I'm 52, grew up listening to all sorts of rock, but had never heard of him or Glass Harp. Never heard anyone mention him. What a shame. Reminds me a little of Roy Buchanan here. Great guitarist.
I have met Phil Keaggy ( I was an artist escort for the publicist he was using at the time) and had the opportunity to chat with him on several occasions just about life, his likes & life - he is one of the nicest, sweetest men I've ever met on top of being a phenomenal musician. He is generous, funny, loving, and has a tender heart.. I also saw him at a local concert for the homeless in Nashville raising funds 4 a homeless outreach ministry there. He is a legend & a humble man.
But yeah, he does seem to be humble, a lot more than I would be if I were as amazing as he is, at least.
For instance, even with his talent, he still makes time to play at small churches and venues.
In addition, at the end of most of his concerts, even in huge arenas, stages, and so on, he sits on the edge of the stage and talks with people, signs autographs, etc.
I love this man so much [In the most heterosexual way possible] and I haven't even met him.
@mrspogadaeus That is very true, I have as well personally met him, as I asked him What advise do you have on a guitar player like me? and he said go for it and don't let people stop you and dont give up! he is a very caring person thats cares for is fans.
@mrspogadaeus I'm not even a musician and he's taken the time to talk to me on several occasions after his concerts, even let me give him a copy of my favorite book by our mutual favorite writer, C.S. Lewis. If you look up the word "humble" in the dictionary, the definition is a perfect description of Mr. Keaggy.
Hendrix was interviewed in the early 70's before Hendrix died. The reporter asked Hendrix what is it like to be the best guitar player in the world, Hendrix said "I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy".....that's some good stuff
At 1:40, he plays a bit from the extended solo on the live version of Rejoice from How the West Was One - was HOPING he would go into the volume swell "trumpet fanfare"! One day I'll see it! Anyone know if there's any footage of it out there?
superb playing from the master , currently gigging with nashvilles queen of the blues , miranda louise , what a combination , kindest regards from scotland
When people ask what it takes to make a top rated comment You tell them Flat Out Honesty..."Flat Out Honesty"=Phil Keaggy Is The Greatest Guitarist That Ever Lived!!!!
I saw Phil at Spririt West Coast in Del Mar CA. about 5 years ago and I was in a tent like structure and there were mayb 5 full rows of people there. He and 2 bandmates started playing and by the time he had been playing a while, I looked back and it was standing room only. They all heard it and packed the place fast.
i like a lot, you youngsters out there want to learn how to play the git box, here is your teacher. Plain and simply one of THE BEST that ever was,is,and will ever be. Just ask around you'll find that even though he is not popular in the POP scheme almost all of the POP artist emulate Mr. Keaggy if they are able. The man can flat get it.........
Love this. My two cents on the greatest guitarist rumor. I had heard the rumor that Hendrix was asked what is was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, and he said "ask Phil Keaggy". Since hearing that rumor, I've seen an interview where he was ask that question and answered something along the lines of "I don't know about the world, maybe the greatest guitarist sitting in this chair". But I believe Phil is among the greatest, most accomplished guitarists in the world. Thanks for shar
may phil and his music live on forever!

Unfortunately many men have distorted religion and used it for control. but we could make the same argument for politics. itself isn't bad but men have killed many people through the abuse of it.
garywingrove 2 months ago
@garywingrove I agree 100%. I went to a pedophile Christian Preschool. I saw first hand how a man can use the belief in a God to make children subservient to him. I think the Idea of god is a beautiful idea gone horribly wrong.
(Sodom and Gomorrah) is a great story about how religion sets up an unconditional disgust for homosexuals and non believers. As far as to claim they are the reason Volcanoes and Earthquakes exist. Consequently, homosexuals still cannot marry. Coincidence?
highintel 2 months ago
@highintel sorry you had a bad experience! the Sodom and Gomorrah story is a little deeper than some people realize. at one point the angels were at Lot's house and the men of the city were trying to get Lot to bring them outside so they could rape them! Homo or Hetero we'd all agree that's wrong. so it was more than just homosexuality. as far as whether or not they can marry and all that, it depends on the church. some are much more open to that. not necessarily my position though.
garywingrove 2 months ago
@garywingrove There are several stories you can take at deeper value and see a larger message. That's what's good about that book. I have several friends with no direction in life and that book gave them purpose. I love that part of the Bible. It's all the other tools left inside to scare people that I worry about.
We are all fine and dandy when the lights are on, but if we get hit with a global catastrophe (Like a meteor) I guarantee out will come the torches and pitch forks.
highintel 2 months ago
@garywingrove The difference in a Gun and religion is that the gun does not come with instructions telling you who to use it on. Religion does.
In order to do gods work you must force your beliefs on others.
How many atheists have knocked on your door trying to convert you? How many religious people have? that answers itself.
I am one to be inspired by Love. Not fear and Hope.
The key to me is acceptance....Not conversion.
EQUALITY..Not Favoritism.
Passion...Not Fear.
highintel 2 months ago
@highintel well many people take the Bible out of context. in fact what you said is scrpitural! it says in 1 Corinthians 13 about how you can have faith and hope but without love it's all meaningless! many people forget that the most important thing is to live as an example rather than to preach at people but at the same time be knowledgable and not ashamed. but yes many people do overreach and they don't understand that they're turning people off so it's counterproductive!

Which is why you attack me and not your fellow Christian logs floating down stream. .
highintel 2 months ago
@highintel I never said anything about Christianity, yet you were quick to go there. What makes your anger and rage towards Christians any different than the anger of radical Muslims? I guess the difference is....you haven't blown anyone up lately?

He is a legend & a humble man.
mrspogadaeus 1 year ago 39
@mrspogadaeus Oh man I envy you so much.
TacoNinja18 1 year ago
@mrspogadaeus That is very true, I have as well personally met him, as I asked him What advise do you have on a guitar player like me? and he said go for it and don't let people stop you and dont give up! he is a very caring person thats cares for is fans.
4everguitarplayer 1 year ago
@mrspogadaeus I'm not even a musician and he's taken the time to talk to me on several occasions after his concerts, even let me give him a copy of my favorite book by our mutual favorite writer, C.S. Lewis. If you look up the word "humble" in the dictionary, the definition is a perfect description of Mr. Keaggy.
