@JedCurtisMusic I don't know man, that's a bold statement. I think that lyrically Elliott is in the top tier, but isn't at very the top of that tier with Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt, and maybe a few others. But I would say that Elliott is the most inventive and original genius with music, specifically melodies, when it comes to anything that could be considered a form of popular music, i.e not classical. He's got more musical talent than all four of the Beatles combined for sure, imo.
oh god... wd's right now and this is the only thing thats even a bit of a bright light. as dumb as that sounds, but thank you so much. i love it. its made one of my favorite elliott songs totally new for me.
oh man the end of this is intense when he keeps saying everlasting waving hand over and over. he's the sad hitchhiker that keeps getting passed by happy people.
this was the first elliott smith song i really loved which is understandable i think since figure 8 was the first of his albums i bought and this is what the second song on it? haha
i really think he was one of the best songwriters ever
I remember listening to figure 8 time after time when it first came out. It sounded like the Beatles with more distortion. Now that I see the Smith covered a bunch of beatle tunes (on youtube), it's like, aha!
i know doesn't it just! i thought personally when he signed to dreamworks and release XO he got the chance to really indulge himself and go for the beatles arrangements he loved since he was a kid. Plus the fact that some of Figure 8 was recorded in abbey road probably had a lot to do with the sounds he put on it
I almost always prefer Elliott's early versions to the album versions. He always changed the lyrics to be much more vague, which is understandable, but I love the personal feeling of the originals.
this is awesome! thank you!
