I saw her as Violetta in Covent Garden in 1995, just before the start of her international fame. She is superb dramatically, visually and vocally (but no E-flat at the end of Sempre Libera). Now getting a bit old for full role credibility. I think she remains the best Violetta around. Dessay et al have small voices, second-rate singers like Netrebko do not even enter the discussion.
For some reasons as a listener I don't like her voice, and I can't even figure out in which role she would be good... Too light for everything! Please don't let her sing Tosca, EVER!!!
I recognized that she has a good tecnique. isn't... ? well people say that, but i don't like listen to her neither, i believe that she lackes of passion.
@minkoss: your guts are unbelievable! Are you God or a stalinist dictator to stop her performance in Tosca? By the way, her performance in Tosca is ranked as one of the BEST ever. You are such an unhappy guy...feel sorry for you but you don't have to thank me for that.
@nick1729 ok I admit the "EVER" was maybe harsh but seriously... did you really have to write what you wrote? Gosh can you imagine the damages you can create by calling someone "unhappy"? Actually I think it says a lot about you... I am not thanking you.
I prefer her Traviata from 1994. Her voice is different now, roles for her would be Tosca and Butterfly. Not that Traviata is impossible for her to do.
then my guess is that you should show some respect to a singer, in this case a much appreciated one not just because 'is popular', but because it really has something to offer, and hold back a little bit regarding tehnique comments...because as you say, u are not a singer
well, there's such a thing as a responsible listener. im not saying she's not good. im just syaing that there are physical signs that she shouldnt be singing this role.
look, if you want to blindly worship her then go for it. dont force me to be part of your cult.
I really do believe that Angela is Angela and nobody else. Comparing her you will insult her and you will insult the people you are comparing with. I dont like Callas. It's a matter of taste. But to put Angela's name without capitals that's rude and you dont deserve to name yourself an opera lover or Callas's fan. As much you will insult Angela, she will continue to be a star despite your "critics". She is the Soprano of the moment as Florez is the Tenor of the moment. Time passes equal for all.
Callas is dead...of course, she had a wonderful voice...but angela also has a wonderful voice(her voice is described as a combination between maria callas and renata tebaldi) and she is alive...so let's stop talking about callas and start talking about the present sopranos: angela, anna netrebko, renee fleming etc...
she overdoes it here, her original interpretation that made her famous was prefect, but here it sjust TOO much, and she's rushing the orchestra... she she looks like HELL... just... too TOO, ya know? and do i hear the tiniest TINIEST pinch of vocal decline?
I totally agree :). That one made me feel like in heaven, when looking back at it, no matter how many times, around the end I can´t stop myself from crying there.
Gheorghiu is so delightful! I mean, not only visually, as some would understand. Anyway, this isn't her best performance of "Sempre libera", but definitely it's still excellent. She inhabits the role perfectly and her colourful, bright and "tearful" tones are ideal to Violetta. Brava Gheorghiu!
how many frustrated peope around here, I'm sure they cannot even sing in the shower...

Non so. Un'onesta soprano, il cui successo totale mi è inspiegabile. A confronto la Fabbricini è Maria Callas.

@minkoss You really believe that? In my opinion, Angela is one of the best Toscas ever. But, well, that's just each other's opinion, he he.

her voice is way to light for tosca..she might be able to pull off butterfly.

I agree with raymzi - she should not be singing this. I like her voice but not for this role. Magda yes, Mimi yes, Violetta no.

she keeps moving arpund like a fidgety person coz she shouldnt be singing this role... improper breath control

Which is the opposite of her 1994 recording where she just sways.

La Violetta por excelencia, siempre será la Callas, lástima que no podemos comparar su actuación en escena, porque no hay testimonios en video.

I think Angela's best performace was as Violetta by Sir George Solti's Traviata.

Still one of Gheorghiu's best roles. That said not my favorite singer or version of this aria.
