  • The 'deeper' music ending is on the DVD - plus a 'clean' version of Tom's starfield titles as an easter egg......

  • bill fraser only agreed to play general grugger if he got to kick k-9

  • who else thinks that this is quite freaky...

  • I love this ending for Meglos. Thanks for posting.

  • Out on retail DVD January 2011

  • Whatever; this theme is ace... when I first saw it, I kinda thought the Doctor was gonna be in trouble for some reason in the next serial...

  • @GenghisKhan44 and he was because the next was full circle which had the doctor stuck in E-space

  • where did u get this?

  • @talentshowdown It's on the VHS release of Meglos.

  • Is this an Easter Egg on the Tom Baker DVD

  • blimey its lloyd grossman at 0:08!

  • Very eerie! Chills down the spine time!

  • werewolfantipaladin as a recent episode says you are not alone

  • looks like david warner in the man with two brains at 0:08!

  • Middle eight gives you goosebumps!

  • am I the only one who likes this lower pitched version of the theme?

  • I like it as well because it has a slightly darker tone to it.

  • i like both high and low

  • @werewolfantipaladin No I definately prefer this variation with the lower pitch, the useral 1980-1985 theme if you ask me is too high pitch

  • Something else that's being forgotten is that if the theme *was* actually being slowed down to increase the running time of the episode (which *isn't* what's happening), then the video would need to be slowed down too, otherwise the pictures would run out before the music ended. The starfield animation is running at normal speed, as is the music - any doubters should just sync the Meglos part 4 closing titles up with any other example from Tom Baker's final season to confirm this.

  • I like it this way.

  • i have always wanted to know why fox or whatever use that sound at the end - dosent it sound too much like starwars ?

  • How is it different

  • The end theme tune pitch is lower than usual

  • How come? Was it done on purpose?

  • I think it was an experiment.

  • Isn't the theme actually being played slower because the episodes significantly under-ran their allocated 25 minute timeslot? It certainly sounds like it.

  • No, it's just a lower pitch.

I've read the actual reason is that a sound effect generator was left on in the editing room when they were editing together the final part - acoustic sound (like speech) wasn't affected but music and sound effects were affected.,

  • I could tell that the theme was pitched down--it was the only time that the 1980 Peter Howell variation was heard in F Minor instead of the usual F-sharp Minor.

  • It was an experiment to try to match the pitch to the 1963 version

  • No it wasn't. It was simply a mistake, with a harmoniser accidentally left in circuit as the closing music was played out during the audio dub. Mark Ayres has confirmed this.

  • You may wanna fix it on wikipedia then :0

  • Don't be so cocky.

It's not on Wikipedia. Anyway, this version is much lower than the 1964 version

  • "Isn't the theme actually being played slower because the episodes significantly under-ran[..]?."

I know others have already answered this ("no", apparently it was due to a harmoniser which I assume downpitched without reducing speed).

But to add even 30 seconds to an overrun episode by simply playing the theme slower would result in the music being *very* much lower, not just a semitone. Even if they restored the pitch via a harmoniser, the rhythm would still be very significantly slowed.

  • It was not. A harmoniser was left out accidentally. Complete accident.
