as an orthodox Jew i can explain thus: it is a paragraph said in the starting of the yom-kippur(day of forgiveness). it is a prayer to g-d to cancel all vows said committed to g-d, for example:ill start learning more Torah(Jewish studies). for the record, it bears no Halachick(call Halacha rules that you must obey as an orthodox Jew) significance. it doesn't mean you can vow anything and back out. there is a Machloket(call it a debate between rabbis)if it is said from now to next,or vice versa.

My understanding is that the version used by most Jews today dates from the Spanish Inquisition, and was written especially for Jews forced to convert against their will.

This is a beautiful melody. The origin though is Spain (although at that time continuous with Morocco.) It is sung in nearly identical manner by North Moroccan, Spanish & Portuguese Jews in Holland & Italy.

Actually, there ARE sons of G-d. This was sort of saying in Israel in Joshua's time, for good persons. The opposite was "son of Belial" or "son of Beltzebub". Equivalent today would be "great guy" or "evil shit" (or something like this...). In Ancient Rome, it was "fortissimus vir" or "greatest man".

So anybody who was good, pious, righteous was son of G-d. Even in one midrash, R. Akiva is called - son of G-d!
