Hey every body, I have made this 5-6 times so far and I don't mix it too much coz I find it 10 times more delisious than when I mix the ingredients a lot, Just thought I would share it with you,
that's how i make mine but some times i add ketchup for more sweeter taste ketchup inside along with everything else except the milk. you can add alittle cooked rice with that and a finley chopped bell pepper too.for the sauce i do the same but sometimes i use tomatoe sauce or paste and add alittle ketchup to loosen the sauce along with the rest you added. great job, it comes out very moist .
I have a few questions: I don't have Worcestershire sauce so what can I substitute with it? Can I use instant oats in a package (Quaker oats)? And can I use ground pork instead of ground beef since I don't have any at the time being. For the sauce same with the Worcestershire sauce and I don't have brown sugar nor mustard. I have oyster sauce and some other Asian flavorings though.
@mivatakuzi You are asking to replace pretty much the entire recipe with something else. I would recommend you google "pork meatloaf recipe" and see what you can find.
omg your'e makin me hungry lol. I LOVE meatloaf!! One problem...i live alone so i find it hard to be motivated to cook for just myself. I went from being married with 3 kids to be totally single and on my own. So when I need a recipe I need something thats gonna jumpstart my motivation. Thanks for doing that :)
@KraftyKatsy I live alone also but SO love meatloaf . . . so what I do is bake the meatloaf in my muffin pan! They freeze really well and I can take out one or two, depending on how much I want tp "pig out" LOL. Also, I can slice it and it makes a really good sandwich on a toasted english muffin.
@lueisadude The oats don't add much flavour so they wouldn't be missed too much. They do stretch the meat out a bit so you can make it go farther, Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it!
Looks yummy. I am trying to change mine up a bit. I have never heard of using milk in meatloaf. I now have to cook with turkey hamburg because my husband can't eat beef so it doesn't quiet taste the same. I am going to try something similar to what you did.
I used to soak the breadcrumbs in milk before putting them in the meatloaf, but I figure why not just throw it all in! I might omit the milk if I was using regular ground beef. The lean ground beef needs a little moisture I find.
I know I'm butting in, but when I lived alone, I loved to cook stuff like this and freeze it in individual servings. Instant food that was good and healthy instead of the crap you get in restaurants. Mmmmmm. Make two good sized dishes a week and in no time you've got 5 meals a week ready to go and all different.
You're the only other person I know that uses the oats. I use all oats though and no crumbs..works out beautifully every time. I work the meat very well also. Looks fantastic!! Blessings, Ang
that looks so good i wanna come live with you...always makin' such tasty looking meals! btw tonight i am making your meatballs with veggies and noodles. i was gonna make it sunday nite but someone forgot to thaw out my ground beef!
OMG yes they did!! the kids loved it they kept asking for more meatballs. i think next time I will just use corn and maybe the potatoes because the kids do not like green things. lol i am gonna make it again but next time i am gonna try it with rice.
I rarely do meatloaf, but when I get the urge I tend to mix it as you do. I don't like stumbling into pockets of components that didn't mix, and yeah, there's only one way. Dive in with both hands.
I've been known to add an arbitrary squirt of ketchup into the mix, for no reason, but then, as you already mentioned, the variations are as limitless as are the number of people who make it.
Looks delicious! You're so right about the two schools of thought about mixing meatloaf. For eons I mixed the same way you do but over the last couple of years, have been using 2 forks (the Ina
Garten way) and I think I prefer it. Maybe it's just different than what I was used to. I don't know. I will give your recipe a go as it looks wonderful. I like your tip about making the top concave to hold the sauce. Brilliant!
Looks good! I meant to ask you this before - where did you get the measuring cups that look like swans? I really like them. We don't live too far apart (I don't think), but have a feeling they are something hard o find.
I always add a healthy amount of prepared horseradish, as well as ketchup AND yellow mustard in mine. It comes out DELICIOUS - very flavorful, but not spicy or strong at all!
Wow, what nice lean meat! Well now lucky Trish gets to try it for the first time. That will be a treat. It's just one of those wonderful winter foods that comforts and warms you and you eat with family! Ya know? Its just not restaurant kinda food, but more the kind you eat with loved ones at home.
Oh yummy yummy! I love the topping! I usually just run a bead of ketchup down it or leave it and use brown gravy. This looks wonderful! Thank you for this!! xo
oh hun...seriously...that is all kinds of delicious looking. Ive made "home made burgers" and now definately need to try this meat loaf exactly as you showed us. The potato on the side of the dish was so snowy white! Looks like a cloud. Dang i'm hungary now!

I must give credit for the AWESOME sauce. It's great! A good alternative to the usual ketchup. :D

NaturallyBlessed83 3 weeks ago
@NaturallyBlessed83 The oatmeal does the same thing as breadcrumbs, it acts as a filler and as a way to keep it moist.

1 other thing if you put fennel in the meat it makes it taste italian style. otherwise it's american.

It adds a nice flavour to the meatloaf. You can add whatever spices to the topping as you like (Italian, Mexican etc)

My mom makes meatloaf like this, it's what I grew up with.
yoyomax12 2 years ago
@juliejo39
The tomato sauce instead of the milk is a good idea, it would give some extra flavour.
yoyomax12 2 years ago
@100poundsin2010 Thanks! You can use the extra lean hamburger in this too, cuts down the calories a bit.
