  • Tons of money in silver and gold, but uses a motor bike helmet for a shield.

  • Silver from £200 got to £1000 in one year? Are you fucking kidding me? It's 5 times more! WTF!! How did that happen?

  • @fablan6 Because a load of bankers pissed away money on irresponsible lifestyles and unnecessary luxury items...maybe even one or more of them purchased one of these real-life periodic tables.

  • his hair *facepalm*

  • if you invest in gold + silver, the price will grow in years. Unfortunately it's like the stock market it goes up and down.

  • How can one protect silver (read trophys, cutlery, coins, etc) from sulphur (H2S) in the air?

  • Pure gold? Isn't it supposed to be clear?

  • @XionixZTV What? Gold is yellowish...

  • @TheEsseboy I think I am being confused by something else but I was thinking gold without any impurities would be clear. I'm probably just being an idiot -_-

  • @XionixZTV it wouldnt be clear, its still gold-coloured

  • @XionixZTV you can make anything transparent, in theory. its got nothing to do with purity though.

  • @Vermin298 Ah I see. Thank you :D

  • How did they do Francium in the real periodic table?O.o

  • @GuttORm321 I highly doubt they put highly radioactive elements such as plutonium and francium. That would be irresponsible.

  • i think the small pellets would have been cooler for a display

  • Judging by a few comments here the price of gold varied from 51k a month ago (01/2012) to 1.7m yesterday back down to 60k today (USD)

Gold is a very unstable investment.

    JK

  • $60,000 worth of gold? I would have jacked that in a heartbeat

  • @newtboy99

You wouldn't be able to "jack" it. Unless you're talking about stroking your tiny penis.

  • 1kg of gold??? $1,700,000USD?

  • Plutonium & uranium are rather accessible now,Fukushima spread literal tons, on land, in air,and hitting the west coast via tsunami wash. You just need a proper chamber to catch the new readily abundant isotopes.

I would like to know, does the extra radiation in the air change the capsulated table elements into sister elements of a different isotope and half life ? And does anyone know how to test the Roy process so we can start saving the planet !?! ERS!

  • That's cool! Hot?

  • He says he makes these for schools? What freaking school has a budget to blow on a whole kilogram of gold? And even if they did, at least the schools around here are not the most secure place for such an item.

Money over knowledge, the sad truth of capitalism

  • @jcrowley1985

I'm pretty sure schools in America have plenty of money... Also, you can have a 'school of chemistry' in a university.

  • 3:43 spilling silver

  • How does the cylinder loosen in that graphite? Does it just slip out or has he greased it?

  • @QBMan

I guess it's because the graphite is just completely smooth and straight on the inside making it easier to slip out of. The contraction of the silver from cooling would have helped tremendously too.

  • behind the furnace the background looks like nurdrages' lab ......

  • cool

  • A kilogram of silver?!

    And a kilogram of GOLD?!

and he didn't even bother with the little wasted bits of silver...

He just might have some extra money there.

  • @galenlynore they WILL have been collected

  • I want a tangable periodic table. plutonium and uranium might be hard to get a hold of...

  • How much is that kilogram of gold you may ask? Take a guess.

    Guessed yet?

    ...

As of today, 2/2/2012, according to goldprice. org, it's $56,454.

  • Do you also have plutonium in that real life periodic table?

  • bloody health and safety. :P

  • Very cool.

As for these periodic tables, I wonder if the British (or American for that matter) government allows individuals to own small amounts of pure fissile material (IE: Uranium or Plutonium) for their periodic tables; nothing dangerous, mind you, it would have to be a significantly smaller portion than critical mass.

  • @auirc they get round that by using different isotopes and in the case of uranium they use depleted uranium, there are a few dangerous elements used but only in tiny amounts that are in well sealed shatterproof casings. watch the first video, "element collector"

  • DAD, IS THE SOUP READY?

It's ok son, i am cooking it with 1050 oC, just 10 more minutes.

  • I want a sample of every element that can be obtained in macroscopic quantities with a half life over 10 years (if radioactive). I think that's everything up to fermium with the exception of astatine and francium.

  • If i did my math right, a KG of gold is worth about $55,000

  • $51000 cylinder of gold nice how you guys just fling it around lol

  • @rolficus you not gonna hurt a solid cylinder of gold its soft but not that soft

  • @rolficus imagine the feeling you would have being in a crowded room and having to watch out for it 0_0

  • I hope they got a Plutonium cylinder too!

  • have they got actinium aswell??

  • What a waste - just think of all the good the money, that silver and gold cylinder is worth, could be put to...

  • @jagara1

Well, yes and no. It's better than the person in question just keeping the money, at least - this way it does at least help pay some wages.

  • @jagara1 yes, it's terrible to waste it on educating youngsters isn't it.

  • @jagara1 Actually gold is quite useless for industrial purposes. It's too dense and heavy while at the same time being too soft to be used as a construction material. Yes, it's a good conductor but there are far cheaper metals that are nearly as good for a fraction of the price.

Silver I'll agree is a bit more useful but at the moment it's far more abundant then useless gold.

  • He spilled it!

  • well that cylinder was worth a bit my mate sold his gold for £10 a gram at scrap price

  • i REALLY want to go to the uni of nottingham, seems like a lot of fun and nice people :)

  • @lovetilatequila4life ive applied this year! its an awesome university, and the campus is like a bit of countryside, smack bang in the center of Nottingham!

  • so he has uranium then?

  • you spilled it

  • Brady, there's one thing I've been wondering a long time... Is red/white hot molten metal still shiny? I don't have myself a kiln to get myself some molten metal as such, so perhaps you would be able to use your vast resources to help me answer this question and perhaps make a video for this curious question?

  • @iman10000 Very shiny, actually. Check youtube for vid 8tt7RG3UR4c (search for 'Melting steel with solar power'), about 1:20 into the video, they melt steel with concentrated solar rays. The reflection of the sunlight is so bright that the red glow of the steel barely registers on the camera, but clearly it is quite shiny as it melts, almost like mercury.

  • @jcims Thank you very much for leading me to this, that's really neat actually :)

  • As of today, Nov. 11 2011, 1 kg of gold (~32 troy ounces) is worth about US$55,000, €41,000, or £36,000.

  • umm, watabout 1 kilogram of uranium?

  • I love metallurgy.. :D ...but this guy, doesn't look like he knows what hes doing.

  • what did he use to smelt it?

  • Argh! He spilled the silver! Not my precious silver!

  • wtf spilling silver!

  • Oh my God, I cringed at 3:43

  • don't spill that! it's silver!!!

  • im trying to make a cannon of iron but i whant to make my own mold how can i make one?

  • do you re use the sacrap silver

  • @kingzing12 they may well do! i still don't know as i'm not one of "them".

  • a red headed Bieber...

  • He just... spilled the liquid silver on the table, "I'll catch it" I wonder how much gold and silver in total is actually spilled in the creation of these cylinders.(3:48)

  • The silver is wanted! Periodicvideos will give a 5000$ reward!

  • Anyone who's interested: I found max whitby on an interesting topic: /watch?v=9VhoDjucVEw He's very interesting.

  • mushy silver :D

  • @periodicvideos So the obvious question is:

How much does one of these periodic tables cost?!

  • please do more videos with this man! please??

  • Brady? Thought I was looking at Tom Cochrane for a minute. lol

  • I love how Max takes the Gold cylinder away before telling Brady what it is.

  • the shavings that came out of the gold cylinder must at least be worth..........

    .................

$1200 almost enough to pay for the silver (That's a smart business)

  • Brady's an Emo.

    I never knew.

  • for some reason i thought it was going to have some kinda of reaction that caused all kind of dramatic effects when it was melted.

  • Risk assessment is for sissies. LET'S MELT SOMETHING!!!

  • @CommonRaven Absolutely right. This guy, for all the clever stuff he does, is a bit of an idiot. He makes a big thing about the risk assessment, then goes and uses a completely unsuitable, and frankly dangerous, piece of headgear. If the HSE (Health & Safety Executive who police safety and investigate accidents in the UK ) saw this they would probably shut him down. Not to mention he has probably voided his insurance too!

  • 3:03 he went anticlockwise haha

  • where can i get a jar like the one he uses for the silver?

  • @flabazoid At any store for chemical supplies

  • I like how he took it out of the guy's hand before he told him that it was gold. LOL

  • @emedf001 I still would have given it back... I needed him to give me a lift back to the train station!

  • @periodicvideos

With that much gold, there isn't a cab in the world who would have turned you down. ;)

  • @periodicvideos I'm pretty sure you would have been able to afford a taxi with that in your pocket...

  • @periodicvideos Ay, one of the many problems that occurred when they removed the gold standard.

  • Does that heater use induction?

  • I like how he carefully takes the gold cylinder out of Bradys hand and puts it in his pocket.

  • Do they do cylinders for radioactive elements?

  • i love silver i wish i could afford a cylinder of it

  • More like $50,391! :O

  • so he didn't punch him and take the gold?

  • Hey, you guys do amazing stuff; keep it comin'!

  • why did you do silver first? thats boring :( you should have done like osmium or uranium!

  • /watch?v=76CNkxizQuc&feature=related i think someone is trying to replicate the profeseur too much

  • If this is for display, how do they prevent it oxidising on the surface?

  • You went without the Prof?

    YOU WENT WITHOUT THE PROF?!

    He was excited! You monster!

  • Now, I'd like to see a cylinder of pure Rhodium. Cool Video though!

  • Great video.

  • Very interesting process!

  • holy crap 1kg of gold?

    that's like...

    *head steams*

    ...

    $35000?!

  • @ham236 It's closer to $50k

  • @ham236 :

    Much more.

  • @ham236 you can get several Kgs of gold just traveling to a third world country and offering medicines or food

  • @ham236 Actually, it's closer to $50,000 (£30,500) at todays prices!

It's incredible to think that just 51.8cc of gold weighs 1kg.

Personally I'd prefer a little ingot to a cylinder. *dreaming*

  • @ham236 And gold isn't the most expensive either.

  • Comment removed

  • @ham236 Notice how he didn't mention it was gold till he got it back.

  • "A full face mosque." Gotta love Google's attempts at voice recognition!

  • @Envergure

A full-face mosque is one that bans the burkha.

  • @MichaelKingsfordGray

Not the point... The audio transcription hears "full face-mask" with a British accent, and interprets "mask" as "mosque". It has an even harder time with an Indian accent.

  • @Envergure you missed the joke...

  • lol i thought that in the moment he turned off the light someone would scream: take the gold cylinder and run guys!!!! :))

  • This character goes around with a 1kg cylinder of pure gold in his overalls? Jeezus I'm in the wrong business....

  • Best quote ever: "Bit like jelly, but 1000 degrees hotter."

that must be such an awesome job! :D

  • was that impurities floating at the top?

Also, after solidification, what was the purity?

  • Hmm I dont really see the point of need a solid silver cylinder. Why not just go silver plated or at at least a hollow cylinder. I guess its because im not rich lol

  • That 1 kg cylinder of gold is worth 48000 US$ !

  • @xng14 where do you get that math? The 1 kg jar was worth $1650 USD.

  • @spinseffing that was of silver... gold costs about $1500 an ounce. $48000 is the correct math for the gold cylinder

  • @Jayj1313 oh, sorry about that. Misread your comment.

  • When I melt stuff, I always wear my Darth Vader helmet for protection. :)

  • @Idtelos Especially whilst melting Rebel outposts?

  • @Idtelos with that piece of gold you could buy your own train

  • The crucible is made out of carbon, and is being heated to be able to melt silver? What is the combustion temperature of carbon???

  • @EPhantom125 You may want the melting temperature of carbon. At atmosphere temperature carbon does not melt, but sublimates, at 3915 K K more or less, which is 3642 °C or 6588 °F. (Wikipedia info.)

  • is that your REAL head?

  • How much is a complete set of the periodic table?

  • I wouldn't hang with 1kg of pure gold. You can buy nice car for it.

  • was he going on a motor race when he wears the bike helmet?

  • wowwwww so cool

  • better than household hacker! :D

  • Brady has a face!?

  • that cylindar of gold he had is currently worth 52 thousand dollars...

  • How long did it take the silver to melt? Do you have to stir it at all? (kind of like when you're making cheap hot cocoa and trying to get the stupid powder to mix)

  • @Odelle5 I would assume you don't stir it. IDK what you would stir it with. You stir cheap cocoa to dissolve it in solution but this is completely different. Also as the man said silver is an excellent conductor.

  • I want one!!!

  • Cool vid! :)

Lemme just note that it's somewhat wrong to think about it as silver shooting up in value. What really has happened is that paper money lost its value relative to silver. Measuring silver to any other commodity, and you'll see fairly stable prices. :) Like when measuring oil to gold, instead of oil to dollar.

Don't sell your silver. Buy more and lose your paper money, asap.

  • So what does he do for the radioactive elements?

  • silver and gold - real money

    fiat sucks.

  • Cool.

  • Does he make silver and gold chess piece sets? I want one :)

  • Just brought back memories of working in zinc die casting. I've been splashed in the face and arms before. A tiny drop will burn the hell out of you.

  • Nice!!!

  • I could put that cylinder of gold in safe keeping for him hehe

  • Oh man I've been eagerly awaiting these vids, I didn't know he would be taken up on his offer! I like this guy, he's got a kooky personality.

  • pretty, pretty, shiny, shiny

  • Interesting.

  • i want one of those!!!

  • Does this video have an ad at the beginning?

  • Jesus christ that was an expensive gold cylinder XD

  • What keeps the red-hot graphite from combusting when you oxpose it to the air?

  • @anonysquirrel The fact that graphite is pure Carbon and therefore not combustible.

  • Unrelated:

Can someone tell me what is that thing the "mad scientist" has at the sides of his glasses?

  • I like this guy.

  • I had to do a risk assessment once, when we (a class of about 20 sixteen year olds) were blowing flames... Scared me quite a bit =D

  • ho boy, i'd like to the cleaner of this lab :-))

  • This is the perfect combination of interests. I love the periodic table videos and I've been working recently on recovering silver from an experiment my students did in class. Seeing molten metal is always a treat and seeing it done so professionally is double.

  • Very much fascinated!

  • I melted a bunch of beer cans in a bon fire once and it almost looked like that. Not as heavy though.

  • I love watching and working with molten metal, 4 years worth of part time jobs in both Aluminum and ferrous foundries, it's definitely something that has to be respected, specially when you're melting steel alloys. Cant wait for more molten stuff.

  • Although it's more engineering and mechanics than chemistry, I would have enjoyed seeing how the cylinder was machined...

  • @thelleht thats why you should always heat the mold before casting. i expect that the graphite mold was in an oven for a while first.

  • @eutectics indeed it was... we will show that in some extra footage later!

  • Awesome. I love Chemistry. Loved it since I got it in 7th grade. Now I'm in 8th.

  • Is that glowing still?

    Yeeeeeahh

  • This is so awesome! More videos like this one please! ^_^
