@fablan6 Because a load of bankers pissed away money on irresponsible lifestyles and unnecessary luxury items...maybe even one or more of them purchased one of these real-life periodic tables.
@TheEsseboy I think I am being confused by something else but I was thinking gold without any impurities would be clear. I'm probably just being an idiot -_-
Plutonium & uranium are rather accessible now,Fukushima spread literal tons, on land, in air,and hitting the west coast via tsunami wash. You just need a proper chamber to catch the new readily abundant isotopes.
I would like to know, does the extra radiation in the air change the capsulated table elements into sister elements of a different isotope and half life ? And does anyone know how to test the Roy process so we can start saving the planet !?! ERS!
He says he makes these for schools? What freaking school has a budget to blow on a whole kilogram of gold? And even if they did, at least the schools around here are not the most secure place for such an item.
I guess it's because the graphite is just completely smooth and straight on the inside making it easier to slip out of. The contraction of the silver from cooling would have helped tremendously too.
As for these periodic tables, I wonder if the British (or American for that matter) government allows individuals to own small amounts of pure fissile material (IE: Uranium or Plutonium) for their periodic tables; nothing dangerous, mind you, it would have to be a significantly smaller portion than critical mass.
@auirc they get round that by using different isotopes and in the case of uranium they use depleted uranium, there are a few dangerous elements used but only in tiny amounts that are in well sealed shatterproof casings. watch the first video, "element collector"
I want a sample of every element that can be obtained in macroscopic quantities with a half life over 10 years (if radioactive). I think that's everything up to fermium with the exception of astatine and francium.
@jagara1 Actually gold is quite useless for industrial purposes. It's too dense and heavy while at the same time being too soft to be used as a construction material. Yes, it's a good conductor but there are far cheaper metals that are nearly as good for a fraction of the price.
Silver I'll agree is a bit more useful but at the moment it's far more abundant then useless gold.
@lovetilatequila4life ive applied this year! its an awesome university, and the campus is like a bit of countryside, smack bang in the center of Nottingham!
Brady, there's one thing I've been wondering a long time... Is red/white hot molten metal still shiny? I don't have myself a kiln to get myself some molten metal as such, so perhaps you would be able to use your vast resources to help me answer this question and perhaps make a video for this curious question?
@iman10000 Very shiny, actually. Check youtube for vid 8tt7RG3UR4c (search for 'Melting steel with solar power'), about 1:20 into the video, they melt steel with concentrated solar rays. The reflection of the sunlight is so bright that the red glow of the steel barely registers on the camera, but clearly it is quite shiny as it melts, almost like mercury.
He just... spilled the liquid silver on the table, "I'll catch it" I wonder how much gold and silver in total is actually spilled in the creation of these cylinders.(3:48)
@CommonRaven Absolutely right. This guy, for all the clever stuff he does, is a bit of an idiot. He makes a big thing about the risk assessment, then goes and uses a completely unsuitable, and frankly dangerous, piece of headgear. If the HSE (Health & Safety Executive who police safety and investigate accidents in the UK ) saw this they would probably shut him down. Not to mention he has probably voided his insurance too!
Not the point... The audio transcription hears "full face-mask" with a British accent, and interprets "mask" as "mosque". It has an even harder time with an Indian accent.
Hmm I dont really see the point of need a solid silver cylinder. Why not just go silver plated or at at least a hollow cylinder. I guess its because im not rich lol
@EPhantom125 You may want the melting temperature of carbon. At atmosphere temperature carbon does not melt, but sublimates, at 3915 K K more or less, which is 3642 °C or 6588 °F. (Wikipedia info.)
How long did it take the silver to melt? Do you have to stir it at all? (kind of like when you're making cheap hot cocoa and trying to get the stupid powder to mix)
@Odelle5 I would assume you don't stir it. IDK what you would stir it with. You stir cheap cocoa to dissolve it in solution but this is completely different. Also as the man said silver is an excellent conductor.
Lemme just note that it's somewhat wrong to think about it as silver shooting up in value. What really has happened is that paper money lost its value relative to silver. Measuring silver to any other commodity, and you'll see fairly stable prices. :) Like when measuring oil to gold, instead of oil to dollar.
