My grandad was in the Waffen SS as a Latvian. He was on the Russian front with the panzer tanks. Sadly I don't know much more information on him as he didn't tell many stories before he died. I wonder if one of these people might be my grandad. (Its hard to tell from the quality)

Yet, most of the Waffen SS atrocities of the Second World War were committed by "elite" and largely German units. If killing civilians indicated a lack of pride, there wasn't a single faction in World War Two that had it.

@40bcoots USSR liberated a lot of people who was suffering in the fascist baltic states 1940 because there where no freedom in these countries at that time and Latvia was a patetic dictatorship before 1940. USSR also bringed justice to these country, something unheard of in the baltics before. The "pact" between USSR and Germany was about "not attacking eachother" it was not about divide Europe. USSR liberated parts of Poland that was part of Ukraine and other Soviet states that Poland occupied.

I'm not really sure if I understand your point. You question why "these farmers" were incorporated into the "ELITE Waffen SS," then criticize them for rather minor atrocities. Yet, most of the Waffen SS atrocities of the Second World War were committed by "elite" and largely German units. If killing civilians indicated a lack of pride, there wasn't a single faction in World War Two that had it.

The Latvian Legion was established approximately one year after the last mass murder of Jews in Latvia. At the very end of World War II, people who had committed war crimes joined the Nazi Party and the security services (Sicherheitsdienst) of the SS, but that does not mean that the entire Latvian Legion was a criminal organisation. No community can be judged on the basis of what individuals have done.

He joined the Luftwaffe and 2 years later was wounded and finished the war as a POW. Not a nice life for a 16 year old boy all alone, no family. @40bcoots USSR liberated a lot of people who was suffering in the fascist baltic states 1940 because there where no freedom in these countries at that time and Latvia was a patetic dictatorship before 1940. USSR also bringed justice to these country, something unheard of in the baltics before. The "pact" between USSR and Germany was about "not attacking eachother" it was not about divide Europe. USSR liberated parts of Poland that was part of Ukraine and other Soviet states that Poland occupied.

You know that many of these Latvian men were pressed into service. There's no difference with the Soviets as they pressed the Latvians into service as well.
Damn the Nazis and the Soviets for interfering into the peaceful independent lives of the Baltic Peoples! If the Soviets left the Latvian people alone in 1940, then they would have been seen as liberators as they claim to be today.

Try a Wiki on "Viktors Arajs". He was a Latvian SS Commander, and he joined very voluntarily. He was responsible for coralling 500 old jews into the Riga Synagogue and then burning them alive. Then tell me he was "fighting the soviets"?
