I would guess that it was an actual phone call. It obviously wasn't Spielberg, but it didn't sound staged to me. If it was, I think he would've done something a lot funnier.
I don't think it was random, I think someone just called him for something, and to give the camera man something to do Brad tried to do something funny. Kind of a distaction so the camera guy wasn't filming Colin on the phone becasue that would be a little rude!
