  • eurosport had the greatest goals ever one evening - no sign of ronnie's im afraid - simply most spectacular goal we ever scored

  • shinner

  • One of the greatest goals ever

  • Better than Rooneys ;)

  • Hahaha great goal for us but its a total shinner it nearly hits his knee! Flukey bastard!

  • @YourManNugget it hit the bak off the net an tats wat counts ya muppet ye

  • @inisboy1 Dont make me hurt ya, ya little bogger muck savage. Even ronnie whelan would laugh at your aran jumpers

  • ahahaha, look at the end, He shinned it.

  • That team actually under achieved. Houghton, Aldridge, Whelan, McGrath, Staunton, Sheedy, these guys had the skill to play proper football, yet Charlton had them playing Tony Pulis style muck.

  • Absolutely beautiful!! We should get Delap in the squad for ammunition so duffer can score a few of these against teh Russki's in the Euro's!

  • Sooo fucking amazing... will never forget this goal

  • you fucking gimp, just had a look at your profile and it looks like you put randon comments on peoples vids in an attempt to make contact with people , why not invest in a good strong rope. cunt.

  • what a fuckin goal !!!

  • @10guitars fluke

  • Uh Whelan..... And Ronnie Whelan has done it.

    great goal great player....

  • the commentator sounds like a drunken german :D

  • One of the best goals of all time

  • he shinned it

  • WAT A GOAL!!!

  • I was an 8 year old boy back then, and while every other boy wanted to be Marco van Basten around me, my heroes were the Irish players (Hughton, Houghton, Aldridge, Bonner, etc.) I acted Whelan's score many times even by the point of Rinat Dassaev. It was a team with an enormous heart, they fell out by huge misfortune against USSR and The Netherlands. Ronnie Whelan - 10/10.

  • What a Goal, What a player!

  • Yeah we didnt have a great game here, you should ve beaten us really, although we did well to come back and equalise. I liked your team. Like with many teams, you were underestimated by the English and the English media

  • what a fucking team we had. we should have been winning fucking tournaments. fuck it anyway, i'm going down the boozer.

  • Mick McCarthy(now Wolves Manager) with a monster throw, Ronnie Whelan(now RTE Pundit) with the SWEEEETEST!! Volleys. Is still one of my Favorites. Love it. Thanks For Posting Bolbronx.

  • It's a great goal.

  • what a fucking throw!!

Rory Delap eat your heart out!!

  • speak english you foreign maniac

  • The ball hit his shin.

Important goal, yes, but stop making more of it than it was folks.

  • @Rentboy6969 Fuck! you are right. I did not know this. It was a jammy shinner

  • @irishchrisc Yeah, the luck o' the Irish wha?! ;)

Ah no but,as much as I said for people to stop making such a deal of it, I made quite a big deal of it when it happened haha. Important goal for sure.

But like you said, a jammy shinner ;)

  • great ball from Mick

  • SCHEENBEEN!!!11!!!1!!!

  • who was it against? his shorts are fab!

  • @JUMPERLEDGE23 This was against the USSR. Ireland were in the same group as England and Netherlands too - Ireland narrowly missed out on the next round, while USSR and Netherlands progressed... all the way to the final.

  • Would be great if only the first angle was available. The replay sadly shows it up for the jammy, shinner goal that it is! I live in denial and just watch the first angle.

  • Cracking volley...Ronnie,cracking,....a little bit of football magic...:-)

  • magic from ronnie. the memorys .......

  • I was at that game, missed the bloody goal because of the Mexican wave.

  • @divoneminus Unbelieveable! Me too! Was watching it approachwhen everyone around me jumped up and I just thought "No, you're all wrong - thats way too early". Was a good 10 seconds before I realsied we'd scored.

  • This was a great goal alright. Does anybody remember John Sheridans goal against Bolivia in a friendly match before the 94 world cup? I remember it being a screamer at the time but havn't seen it since. Doesn't seem to be up on youtube either. Definetly up there as one of Irelands best goals.

  • holy shit that was a long throw...rory delap wouldnt even match that

  • he's a lot better off than you , what have you contributed to the world besides being an arrogant half witted lazy cunt

  • @GarGPS wat do u mean

  • The second best Irish goal ever.....

Robbie Keane against Holland in 2004 was the greatest solo effort i've ever seen by a man in green.

Type 'Robbie Keane 2004' to see it....

  • Indeed one of the greatest goals ever, but the media ignores it, perhaps because it is a goal for Ireland. Ronnie Whelan was a great match winner, his contribution to LFC and the Irish national team was immense.

I also like Mick McCrarthy (partly for his attitude towards Roy Keane in 2002). The 1988 Irish team suffered the absence of Mark Lawrenson who had quitted football some weeks before, but it featured the great Kevin Sheedy.

  • i agree, it probably was our best ever goal... but it's still a shinner

  • Best Irish goal ever. Best Irish performance ever. We should've won 3-0. After beating England a couple of days before we played the most confident football I've ever seen an Irish side play against a top world team (which USSR were at the time). As a result (1-1 in the end) it doesn't match Romania 90 or Italy 94. But as a performance it exceeded both.

  • Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • The best moment ever when Whelan put the ball in the net!!.....i hate the media hype England get every world cup everytime saying its the best team since '66.....i think ireland would give them a run for ther money!!

  • Its all going to start again Especially if they beat Croatia tonight. England will go out in the quarter finals as usual.

  • My favourite goal ever...

  • That is one hell of a long throw.. Mick McCarthy, the Rory Delap of his day?!

  • Best goal fo the 88' Finals BY FAR!!! Of course it it had been Gullit or van basten or even Lineker it would have got so much more exposure. I'm Bulgarian by the way. Hate them fucking Russians, HATE them!

  • I mean European finals

  • this is one of the best goals scored in a world cup finals

  • the throw was massive by mick and the finish is sentential. Ireland was always seen as a small team back then, but they players they had then was actually good enough to win a tournament. they had players playing with the best clubs in the world..and they were underrated by tactics and media

  • Very true, if Kieft hadn't scored that lucky goal against Ireland you would have won the tournament instead of us. It was a great team. McGrath, Staunton, Aldridge, Houghton, Whelan, Bonner... I am always happy to see Ireland at the big tournaments and I am happy that they have a good chance of qualifying for the upcoming World Cup.

  • @cornelisvz Subtle Dutch sarcasm perhaps?

  • @irishchrisc Not at all. I think I wrote this comment before Henry did what he did. I hope to see Ireland on all upcoming major football events. And if we meet in the final I hope to drink a pint before and after the match with you, Irishchrisc. Or two. Or three. Or...

  • @cornelisvz Dont be stupid. West Germany would have wiped the floor with you.

  • that was some throw aswel

  • we just signed another deal with bloody umbro, bring back adidas!

  • yeah im with ya there.. i hate umbro..think a puma kit would be cool too though...

  • That goal marked the beginning of the end of communism in Eastern Europe. Ronnie Whelan's a hero! =D

  • Best goal ever !!!!!!!!

  • It doesnt show it very clear here but I remember one of the German cops jumping up and down when that goal was scored. It was an amazing sight.

  • Some of the German cops were asking Irish fans for their scarves, as souviners.

  • cousin of mine

  • Dassayev had some trouble with those volleys in 1988!

  • what i meant to say was.... 2nd best goal ever.. after ray h against engerland - where can ye get those jerseys these days..??!!

  • SEX

  • I'm more impressed with the throwin tbh

  • Shin kick, but beautiful all the same.

  • merdosi bastardi rotti in culo bavisi inglesi di merda

  • Still gives me goosebumps, thanks

  • What language does the commentator speak?

  • Its danish

  • @stipefan11 danish

  • right on dude

  • hit it smack on the shin

  • lol yea that was off the shin, so a bit fortunate it went in so perfectly, but still good agility and timing just to connect like he did.

  • hell yeah

  • best fucking goal ever go ireland

  • What a fucking goal. Ronnie Whelan, great player, shit shit manager.

  • I wish Gazza and Gary Mabbutt had represented Ireland, or that great Argentinian Jose Marie Brown from the 1986 World Cup winning team....

The green army will rise once more...!!

  • <3 nom nom

stop fighting pls. make love not drama. T4

  • when?

  • those ireland days are going to coming back again

  • i would love to be at that match

  • what a goal and against possibly against one of the best goalkeepers of that tournament..

    up the irish!

  • Looking at this video makes me proud to be irish when we beat england. Up the Irish

  • Except that this was the USSR...

  • Cool. that's Dasaev in the goal.

  • what a goal - i was at the match- lives long in the memory- oh happy days

  • Ronnie Whelan, one of the defining players on that great Liverpool team of the mid to late 1980's. He was a huge loss to Ireland in the 1990 World Cup finals 2 years later - suffered an ankle injury playing for Liverpool, and Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool manager at the time left him on the field. He never fully recovered for the rest of his career. I remember the goal, was in my friends living room watching the game. Ireland's best ever International performance.

  • Mick used to be Sunderland manager as well..

  • Actually the danish commentator says right before Whelan hits it, that the throw is "as good as a corner kick...and..oiiii!"

  • Am I the only one who is more impressed by the throw?? Holy shit that was long.

  • I think the guy who threw it was Mick McCarthy, who was famous for his long throw. Whenever Ireland won a throw in having Mick on the team meant that the throw was as good as having a corner kick. He went on to be the manager of the national team.

  • asshole

  • doesnt matter if he shinned it a little most players wouldnt have the skill or thought to try it. irish and liverpool legend.still sweet 20 years later

  • this one mades me a ireland fan untill now!

  • what a beautiful swing of his left foot, he is a lefty for sure, a great goal. kevin sheedy must be kicking himself!

  • He shinned it, but a great goal ne'ertheless.

  • I was 14 when I saw that goal and wanted to get am irish jersey what Ronnie was wearing but I couldn't.

  • I remember that moment so well. The cops in the corner of the picture started jumping up and down. It was so funny seeing them enjoy that goal so much; it was truly a magnificent goal. The BBC switched over to this game instead of broadcasting the England game.

  • The GOAL that made me IRISH fan for all time!! Thank you Mr. Whelan! :) Ireland showed that players with heart and team spirit can beat anyone. These type of players are missing nowadays.

  • what a fucking goal!

keeping it in the family matey ;)

  • Danish commentator great

  • For me this was the best goal of Euro 88, ahead of Van Basten's one in the final. Curiously both were scored against the same goalie. And as said, exceptional throw too.

I was 10, it was the first big tournament I saw live and I'll always remember watching this one.

  • great goal but he hits it with his shin so a bit more luck than technique

  • What a goal!!!

  • Excellent!

  • Gol of the 21 century!

  • Ah that was in the 20th Century my friend..

  • feckin great goal !

  • Sportsman's Dinner with Ronnie Whelan in aid of Zöe's Place Baby Hospice. 5th October at the Devonshire House Hotel. Tickets £28 tel: 0151 2280353

  • He says it himself he shinned it and it could of gone anywhere, but who cares bet dasayev the no.1 keeper in the world at the time, what a game, day, tournament, always remember that goal

  • brilliant....

  • I was there. An englishman surrounded by thousands of Irish, seeing one of the greatest goals of all time! An amazing day.....and pretty amazing night in the old town of Hanover afterwards....! Thanks for sharing this one! I haven't seen it since that day! Great.

  • Hahaha, great goal but a complete fluke at the same time.

  • The Soviet Union collapsed soon after that goal.

Forget you Solidarity and your Václav Havel it was Ronnie Whelan who freed Eastern Europe.

  • i love ronnie whelan. what a team back then though....

  • yeah we won a game against england we could have lost, drew the game against the soviets we definately should have won and lost a game against holland we should have drawn. whelan was my favourite ever player though

  • The old days when Ireland had a good team...

  • i remember this sensational goal!!eire was the best team in euro 88...it was a unlucky team...

  • The throw in is some distance too. Musta been Mick McCarthy?

  • I remember this goal on Live TV and I remember going "Wow", I was 6 at the time, always wanted to see it again

  • what a goal
