That team actually under achieved. Houghton, Aldridge, Whelan, McGrath, Staunton, Sheedy, these guys had the skill to play proper football, yet Charlton had them playing Tony Pulis style muck.
you fucking gimp, just had a look at your profile and it looks like you put randon comments on peoples vids in an attempt to make contact with people , why not invest in a good strong rope. cunt.
I was an 8 year old boy back then, and while every other boy wanted to be Marco van Basten around me, my heroes were the Irish players (Hughton, Houghton, Aldridge, Bonner, etc.) I acted Whelan's score many times even by the point of Rinat Dassaev. It was a team with an enormous heart, they fell out by huge misfortune against USSR and The Netherlands. Ronnie Whelan - 10/10.
Yeah we didnt have a great game here, you should ve beaten us really, although we did well to come back and equalise. I liked your team. Like with many teams, you were underestimated by the English and the English media
Mick McCarthy(now Wolves Manager) with a monster throw, Ronnie Whelan(now RTE Pundit) with the SWEEEETEST!! Volleys. Is still one of my Favorites. Love it. Thanks For Posting Bolbronx.
@JUMPERLEDGE23 This was against the USSR. Ireland were in the same group as England and Netherlands too - Ireland narrowly missed out on the next round, while USSR and Netherlands progressed... all the way to the final.
Would be great if only the first angle was available. The replay sadly shows it up for the jammy, shinner goal that it is! I live in denial and just watch the first angle.
@divoneminus Unbelieveable! Me too! Was watching it approachwhen everyone around me jumped up and I just thought "No, you're all wrong - thats way too early". Was a good 10 seconds before I realsied we'd scored.
This was a great goal alright. Does anybody remember John Sheridans goal against Bolivia in a friendly match before the 94 world cup? I remember it being a screamer at the time but havn't seen it since. Doesn't seem to be up on youtube either. Definetly up there as one of Irelands best goals.
The state is spending more than 91.5million euro a year to accommodate 7000 asylum seekers, due to 7yr backlog. There are 14,131 'leave to remain' applicants whom the Justice Dept. describes as having 'unfounded' claims for asylum.

Meanwhile our health, education systems are breaking down and Irish people are being told to emigrate.....goodbye Ireland, goodbye the celts.
Indeed one of the greatest goals ever, but the media ignores it, perhaps because it is a goal for Ireland. Ronnie Whelan was a great match winner, his contribution to LFC and the Irish national team was immense.
I also like Mick McCrarthy (partly for his attitude towards Roy Keane in 2002). The 1988 Irish team suffered the absence of Mark Lawrenson who had quitted football some weeks before, but it featured the great Kevin Sheedy.
Best Irish goal ever. Best Irish performance ever. We should've won 3-0. After beating England a couple of days before we played the most confident football I've ever seen an Irish side play against a top world team (which USSR were at the time). As a result (1-1 in the end) it doesn't match Romania 90 or Italy 94. But as a performance it exceeded both.
The best moment ever when Whelan put the ball in the net!!.....i hate the media hype England get every world cup everytime saying its the best team since '66.....i think ireland would give them a run for ther money!!
Best goal fo the 88' Finals BY FAR!!! Of course it it had been Gullit or van basten or even Lineker it would have got so much more exposure. I'm Bulgarian by the way. Hate them fucking Russians, HATE them!
Where in Dublin Central do Workers Party, Lab, SF, FG, FF, candidates live?
Are they living in areas with unproportional amounts of immigrants, failed asylum-seekers or those who have evaded deportation, or those immigrants with criminal records in their own countries?
Do they live in mostly (if not totally) white, more up-market residential areas?
Well, they are for mass-immigration & expect YOU to live & deal with it.
Vote Pat Talbot - you'll know where you stand & he'll stand with you.
the throw was massive by mick and the finish is sentential. Ireland was always seen as a small team back then, but they players they had then was actually good enough to win a tournament. they had players playing with the best clubs in the world..and they were underrated by tactics and media
Very true, if Kieft hadn't scored that lucky goal against Ireland you would have won the tournament instead of us. It was a great team. McGrath, Staunton, Aldridge, Houghton, Whelan, Bonner... I am always happy to see Ireland at the big tournaments and I am happy that they have a good chance of qualifying for the upcoming World Cup.
@irishchrisc Not at all. I think I wrote this comment before Henry did what he did. I hope to see Ireland on all upcoming major football events. And if we meet in the final I hope to drink a pint before and after the match with you, Irishchrisc. Or two. Or three. Or...
Ronnie Whelan, one of the defining players on that great Liverpool team of the mid to late 1980's. He was a huge loss to Ireland in the 1990 World Cup finals 2 years later - suffered an ankle injury playing for Liverpool, and Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool manager at the time left him on the field. He never fully recovered for the rest of his career. I remember the goal, was in my friends living room watching the game. Ireland's best ever International performance.
I think the guy who threw it was Mick McCarthy, who was famous for his long throw. Whenever Ireland won a throw in having Mick on the team meant that the throw was as good as having a corner kick. He went on to be the manager of the national team.
doesnt matter if he shinned it a little most players wouldnt have the skill or thought to try it. irish and liverpool legend.still sweet 20 years later
I remember that moment so well. The cops in the corner of the picture started jumping up and down. It was so funny seeing them enjoy that goal so much; it was truly a magnificent goal. The BBC switched over to this game instead of broadcasting the England game.
The GOAL that made me IRISH fan for all time!! Thank you Mr. Whelan! :) Ireland showed that players with heart and team spirit can beat anyone. These type of players are missing nowadays.
For me this was the best goal of Euro 88, ahead of Van Basten's one in the final. Curiously both were scored against the same goalie. And as said, exceptional throw too.
I was 10, it was the first big tournament I saw live and I'll always remember watching this one.
He says it himself he shinned it and it could of gone anywhere, but who cares bet dasayev the no.1 keeper in the world at the time, what a game, day, tournament, always remember that goal
I was there. An englishman surrounded by thousands of Irish, seeing one of the greatest goals of all time! An amazing day.....and pretty amazing night in the old town of Hanover afterwards....! Thanks for sharing this one! I haven't seen it since that day! Great.
