About your analogy with the child, even if you were right I do not feel we should comply with a foul practice just to avoid provocation. However, the thing is, Islam cannot co-exist with contemporary society in principle, and provocations will only demonstrate it to the public, as they see the unacceptable responses by the Islamic community (read the news on the Pakistan ban of facebook and youtube for example)
