I used to go over to Hound Dog & His Common Law Wife Freda On Sundays and she used to treat my son and I to a great dinner of chitlins, greens & hamhocks. In about '73 or 74 My wife and I drove Freda to The Ann Arbor Fest. to see her beloved Hound Dog play. Driving back Freda told us "This is the 1st time I've been outside the Southside of Chicago in 13 years." I just replied "it's my pleasure."
If the blues is about feel and emotion, Gary Moore had it in spades. R.I.P. He was a great guitarist and openly paid homage to his influences. Born in Belfast, it's a blues town.
I only saw him once in Chicago but several times in Cleveland and in Boston and at festivals. Out of town Brewer played mostly bass parts and Houndog did the show. But when I saw him in Chicago, Houndog played the bass parts and Brewer played chorus after chorus of some of the most astounding lead guitar I've ever heard.
Talked with him by phone when he was only famous at Maxwell Street at Chicago and Bruce Iglauer found him (Bruce from Alligator Rec) Hound Dog was a nervous and shy person but a good friend sad he is gone just like others. R I P dear Hound Dong from Fred and Herman
@Frontierblues John Mayer should stay the fuck away from this, he has no right, he has no soul. John Mayer should go listen to some Johnny Lang, they could do a record together called [PATHETIC]
Maybe he meant this to be the "Freddie King" Blues. Anyway, too bad he didn't come up with a rockin' blues number and call it "Six Finger Blues" now that would have been cool.
@ab77blues ........what a great comment. I only wish I would have said it. I don't want to speak ill of the departed, but the words Gary Moore and Blues should never be said in the same sentance.
@Bubbacat54 couldnt agree more....!!! The guy could play guitar but certainly not Blues the proper way....Hell I play better Blues then Gary Moore but he may be a better guitar player....Some people will never understand what it's all about......
@landonrob I don't understand it myself , not on an intellectual level but I "get it " I think & I know I can play as well as Gary Moore... and from the heart at the same time . A little talent and way lot of immersion .
I was looking for some reaal blues players and found it here. Hound dog plays it slow and mean.
I love his playing. It satisfied my soul to hear him play.
