Hey. Your videos are great. Thank you. Just a question. I want to buy a wood turning lathe. Im a conpletely beginner. Can you tell me which one? I dont want to buy a super fancy 1000$ lathe.
Just a quick thank you for the videos, I am new to woodturning and have picked up many tips from you. I love your casual manner, but this hides a very experienced craftsman. Thanks again
Love all of your projects Carl, I am having a problem when I make boxes, when I hollow out the inside, i keep unintentionally tapering to the bottom, any suggestions on squaring it up so when I mount it to the waste block it seats tight. Thanks so much for your videos.
I took an old scrapper years ago and sharpened the edge of it. I use this sometimes for making the walls straight. Yes, this is something you have to keep an eye out for, because if it is tapered it will just pop off.
The box, of course, it really cool! What's more interesting, though, is that beard! Will we get to see a gradual change to a full beard through the winter, or is it just a temporary project? ;)
Carl, did you say you could apply an oil finish (like a salad bowl finish) on a piece that has been sanded with your wax/mineral oil mix? I like the idea of sanding the way you do, but prefer a high gloss final finish. I didn't think anything (other than more wax) would adhere once wax had been used. Thank you for all your videos. Marc
looks great carl Hope your wife liked it.How did you like the grain pattern in the wood.I have one the same size sitting here on my computer desk.Great job
That pallet wood is definetely different stuff. I finally had a few hours in the shop tonight. I started roughing out a piece of 2"x2" spanish cedar. I'm going to make 2 little boxes and I have a glass or chalice or something like that in pretty good shape. Crappy tearout. Als i grapped the dull chisels instead of the sharpened ones. Was wondering why it was so deifficult tonight, lol. I'll take some pics and post them soon.
Carl I am a new turner (Jet 1642) and have been following your projects for a year or more. Wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your videos and that they inspire me to keep trying. Thanks ! Bill
Hello there, very good job. That is a nice way to us the wood, have a nice day over there, and if you have some, rain you do not need send it over here to Houston Tx. please
Several people have asked me about how I make the videos. I am kicking around the idea of doing a video on how to do a video in the next few weeks. To take the pictures, I use a light box.
You've probably answered this question before, but as a new wood turner, I need all the advice I can gather. What is the liquid you use when sanding your pieces?
nice project Carl, now that I'm making some wood turning videos I appreciate what it takes just to make them. thanks for taking the time to share your projects with all of us. I always look forward to seeing your next video, thanks! Tom
Nice little box, lately I've been doing a few miniatures . There a lot of fun. I like seeing how small I can make things and at the same time my little girl is getting furniture for her dolls.
That Sycamore looks like it turns nice. I was wondering what the Tooth Fairy is giving now a days. A quarter probably wouldn't get it, oh well. Nice box. Hope the Tooth Fairy doesn't take it with her.

Hi Marc,
Yes, I have used salad bowl oil over the top with no problems but it will not give you a high gloss finish.

It is a combination of mineral oil and paste wax. 10 parts mineral oil to 1 part paste wax.
Thanks,

I think it is up to a buck. How is that for inflation. I wish my wages went up like that, but our tooth fairy leaves 10 dims and the kids like it. :)
